2 The design problem The narthex and parlor areas outside the sanctuary are in need of updating. The goal of the renovation is not only to make the space more inviting to possible young parishioners but also to solve a number of problems the space currently has. The following are issues are those the property commission indicated needed to be addressed in the design: Pastor Portraits These are important to the church community and need to be on display in a high-traffic area, in a location that is safe of weather damage. Stained Glass The stained glass currently in the window was a gift and needs to be kept, but it is currently not energy efficient. Furniture and Materials The furniture and materials in the space need to be updated in a way that both young parishioners and the existing community can be comfortable in. Adequate Storage Currently many folding tables are used to store items that are used in the space, and cause the space to be less efficient. Lighting The current lighting in the space could be improved; it is not as welcoming as it could be.

4 -Aim to create an atmosphere that both the existing community is comfortable in but is clean, modern and appealing to a younger generation. -All furniture, lighting and materials can be purchased locally or easily ordered online. -This design unifies the narthex and parlor, but the spaces can still be separated via a low-profile privacy drapery hung on a track across the ceiling. 8 DESIGN STATEMENT For my desgn I wanted to create a clean, simple, modern space that people of all ages can enjoy. There were a few key points that I concentrated on to achieve this. In the parlor/hallway, the carpet is replaced with hardwood flooring for easier cleaning. There is an area rug created out of Flor carpet tiles to reduce the noise in the space. The carpet tiles can be arranged in different patterns and are wasily cleaned and replaced. For the portriats of the Pastors, my design keeps them their original size but the frames are replaced with a simple black frame and organized in a linear collage to add room for expansion. I added a bookcase in the hallway next to the parlor that creates a space for storage and also to possibly showcase artwork done by the congregation. The color scheme for the parlor is meutral with an accent color of blue. To add color and pattern to the space, I left it open for members of teh congregation to donate handmade throw pillows. 14 Bethany Church is a local church in the Greece district looking to increase their membership. They would like to attract new members especially young families from the area. The first step they would like to take is redesigning the spaces that the community utilizes the most. Young, modern, and versatile are the words that I would like the space to be associated with. The portraits of the past pastors will be leaning and lined up on the wall in the parlor. Because the portraits will not be permanently attached to the wall it will be easy to add on in the future. The miniature shelf that the portraits are resting on could also be layered to add pictures of community events, friends and families of the church. For the rest of the parlor and narthax space, I feel that a modern look can be achieved by changing the materials, finishes, and updating the kitchenette area. I believe that these elements will be a viable solution while looking modern and a place where any person of all ages could enjoy. Interior Design Remodel Blenda Luong

19 My goal for this space was to create a contemporary design that modernized the space while keeping the original nature of the Church. This was executed through the bright yellow accent paint and lounge chair upholstery. Yellow was chosen as the accent color to compliment the goal of creating a young and energetic space. Modern furniture with sleek and chic edges were also selected for this space. A large change made to the space was the new Kitchenette which was been opened up and remodeled with Craftmaid millwork featuring white cabinetry with glass accent cabinetry doors, stainless steel appliances and a tile countertop. Adjacent to the remodeled kitchenette is a new custom coffee bar to accommodate Sunday Brunch, which also features white cabinetry and tile countertops. Modern bistro tables have been added for dining as well. The original stained glass window was removed and turned into modern art panels placed throughout the space. 24 The Craftsman style, much like modern design, is about clean simple lines. Traditionally, oak, walnut and cherry woods, handmade tiles, and stain glass, are just a few examples of common materials used in this typical style. For the remodel of Bethany Church s interior space, this style will be a perfect fit that will embrace and enhance the existing materials of the Narthex, while at the same time bring new life and a contemporary feel to the Parlor. It is important to define the two spaces and their purpose, while at the same time bring cohesion to them. The use of natural earth tones of browns and creams will be the overall color base while slate blue and greens will accent the parlor. 26 The Narthex floor will be installed with new porcelain tile that will offer a more formal entrance to the space while tying in with the existing stone work on the walls. The Narthex will now bridge the space between the Sanctuary and the Parlor. The Pastor s portraits will be unified in size and moved to the Narthex for formal display. 27 The Parlor will now become a comfortable lounge and coffee area for all to enjoy. The stain glass windows will be removed and each piece will be made into its own wall panel and placed on the center back wall as the focal point of the room. 28 By removing the door and partially enclosing the Parlor, you will be able to utilize the corner as a bulletin area and centralize communication by posting events, church updates, and at the same time offer a small corner for small children to sit and play. Parlor Suzanne Lefebvre

29 The coffee bar is the newest addition to the Parlor. By removing the underused kitchen appliances and the enclosed closet look, you offer a clean, streamlined coffee area that is welcoming to the congregation. Under counter appliances opens up counter space and a coffee bar is added to define the food and beverage area. Additional cabinets and large pantry offers much needed storage.
