The materials are natural and the colours are warm and earthy; it s about embracing imperfections and making room for nature and relaxation. Fitting perfectly within the Blurred Boundaries trend identified by IKEA for this spring and summer, April News blends the boundary between indoor and outdoor furniture. PH PH PH Among the highlights are products for a truly natural bedroom. A new bedframe, bedside table and chest of drawers are made of solid, renewable birch that s sourced to strict standards. This is in line with our goal of only using wood from more sustainable sources by Complement the bedframe with our new rage of mattresses and mattress pads made with organic materials for a healthy sleep environment. PH Another big piece of news is a modular storage system that optimises the space throughout the home. Also this spring, the living room welcomes a new sectional sofa, pouffes and a tray table. Children can delight in two new textile collections that pay tribute to the endangered species of the world. Use it as a coffee table or bedside table, move to another room, or stack it away. As functional as it is beautiful in blue, it s the removable tray and foldable legs that make it such a flexible table. It can be assembled quickly and easily thanks to parts that click together and pre-drilled holes. The table legs are made from rubberwood from responsibly managed forests. Instead of letting the wood become firewood, we use it for furniture and take better care of the planet s resources by doing so. Woven with great craftsmanship, it comes from our initiative of handwoven rugs in India and Bangladesh. The irregular pattern has been woven in 100% wool in a way that can t be replicated by machines making every rug truly different from each other. The weavers creating VIDEBÄK rug, as well as our other handmade rugs from India and Bangladesh, use a new, improved loom. This is the result of a development done by IKEA making the loom more ergonomic and require less strength to use than a traditional loom. This is all part of our commitment to organised weaving centres with good working conditions, fair wages, stable work and care for the environment. The dark-blue bedspread is made with linen on the top side and cotton on the other. Choosing linen as part of the bedspread has been a conscious choice for its environmental benefits. Linen is a renewable and biodegradable fibre that uses less energy, less water and less fertilisers when cultivated. But the good choices don t stop there. 15 IKEA PRESS KIT /APRIL 2018 / 15 PH JOFRID CUSHION COVER & THROW Not only are JOFRID throws and cushion covers made of cotton and linen, both natural materials, but they ve been dyed in a more natural way. We revived an old tradition of dyeing with the help of nature s colours in order to reduce the environmental impact. This is part of a pioneering project at IKEA utilising a completely new way of dyeing textiles using agricultural waste products like leaves, nutshells and orange peel that would otherwise be thrown out. These have given rise to natural and bluish tones that will only become more beautiful with wear and tear. Material expert at IKEA, Catherine Larsson, explains further: I heard of the new method and found it interesting for us. Textile dyes are usually oil-based, but the dye we use for JOFRID is instead based on completely natural and renewable resources that look like and function in the same way as chemical dyes. We ve started on a small scale, but aim to develop this and other projects as soon as we can. By using nature s own dyes, it means that we can create beautiful textiles with long lifespans while being kinder to the environment. We aim to develop this and use it more in the future. The designers Knut Hagberg and Marianne Hagberg share their ideas behind the collection: The inspiration for BJÖRKSNÄS collection comes from our Scandinavian roots and from the reality of everyday life. These are classic and freestanding products created to last a long time and to survive the ever-changing world of interior design. It s been developed in collaboration with the Swedish top chef Maximillian Lundin, who knows a lot about cooking in a home environment and has contributed to making kitchen times as smooth as possible through the new system: A home kitchen is of course not the same as a restaurant kitchen. When designer Monika Mulder was asked to challenge the norm of a work chair from a design perspective, she created something human, feminine and elegant. We wanted people to look twice at the chair, to turn around, Monika says. HATTEFJÄLL has a very subtle waist. It indicates lower back support and brings in ergonomic and emotional comfort. With IKEA s ergonomic expertise, the chair has been made to support all physical needs. With the possibility to adjust the back height and seat depth, it s designed so all different body types can find the ideal sitting position. 37 IKEA PRESS KIT /APRIL 2018 / 37 PH DJUNGELSKOG COLLECTION We created the DJUNGELSKOG collection to highlight the beautiful wild animals throughout the world which are endangered. Designed for 3-7 year olds, the animals in the collection make wonderful friends to play with. IKEA also cares about animals and the environment, and we work with various initiatives. For example, as far back as the 1980s when a forest fire in Borneo destroyed a lot of rainforest, IKEA stepped in to help. As Martin Petri, who works with sustainability at IKEA, explains: When Ingvar Kamprad, founder of IKEA, heard about the forest fire he wanted to contribute to the restoration of the rainforest. That s why, since 1998, we ve financed the project Sow a seed which has led to more than 12,500 hectares of rainforest being replanted. With the replanting, the orangutan and other magnificent rainforest animals could return to their habitats. It also feels good to know that many of the patterns in DJUNGELSKOG collection are printed with a pigment print, which skips a large washing step during production, and reduces water consumption by 30-40% compared with the reactive printing technique. So, it s no surprise that when we adapted our POÄNG armchair for children, it was so appreciated. Now it s time for our classic STRANDMON armchair. But making a children s version isn t just about shrinking the size of the adult chair, says Product Developer Nicolas Cortolezzis. Children do not have the same proportions as adults and they don t sit like we do. They move around and like to put their feet up, which is why we made a fixed seat instead of having a loose cushion as the adult version. Nicolas and his team worked a lot with safety and ergonomics to make it stable and welcoming to sit-as-you-like. Just like its parent, STRAND- MON children s armchair will stand daily wear and tear, and has a more resistant fabric. The tiger, panda and other wild animals are found on quilt covers, towels and more. For Product Developer Anna Edlundh and her colleagues it s a given to choose materials and production methods that are neither harmful to children nor our environment. It felt particularly good that we use materials such as the cellulose fibre called lyocell, cotton from more sustainable sources and polyester made from recycled plastic, says Anna. PRINTING THAT SAVES WATER Just like DJUNGELSKOG collection, the textiles in URSKOG collection are printed with a pigment print that offers great environmental benefits. For example, for a single duvet cover with a pillow case at least 30 litres of water can be saved! All the cotton in our products can be traced back all the way to the farmers. It s a guarantee that the cotton actually comes from a more sustainable production. URSKOG series.
