1 BEVERLY HILLS CITY OF BEVERLY HILLS COMMUNITY SERVICES DEPARTMENT MEMORANDUM TO: FROM: DATE: SUBJECT: Recreation and Parks Commission Steven Zoet, Director of Community Services June 1,2015 Friends of Greystone Proposal to Convert the Library into a Museum Representatives from the Friends of Greystone (FOG) will present their proposal to restore the Greystone library to its 1928 era condition and desires to utilize the space to display various items that have been gifted to their organization from various members of the Doheny family through the years. The present day condition of the library is not historically accurate to the original construction of the mansion nor to a subsequent remodel that occurred by the family in the 1940 s. In their continues efforts to restore the mansion to its historical status, which is supported by the City, the FOG is desirous of partnering with the City to restore the space to its original grandeur and to utilize it in a way that pays tribute to and provides a greater insight into the occupation and use of the home by the Doheny family. This would be done by formally displaying the items that have been received from the family through the years. Some of these items are on display in locked glass cabinetry adjacent to the kitchen but it is not a large or appropriate enough space that is easily accessible by the public. Many other items remain locked in storage and unable to be enjoyed by the public. Consistent with past practice and proper protocols this item is being presented to the Commission for your awareness. Staff and Commission representative Susan Gersh met with representatives from FOG and the construction trades, who have assisted with pricing this effort, on May 1gth Commissioner Anderson, who also serves on the Greystone ad hoc committee, was scheduled to attend but had a conflict arise and was unable to participate. Staff and Commissioner Gersh are supportive of the proposal conditioned on the understanding that the space would continue to be utilized for other uses and functions and would not be a dedicated nor exclusive space. Upon completion of the presentation to the Commission staff will schedule a meeting with our City Council liaisons and, pending their support, schedule the item for presentation to and discussion with the full City Council for their consideration and direction.
