2 Envisioning SOMA in 2050 July August 2016 (5 weeks) U.C. Berkeley CED Design & Innovation for Sustainable Cities Site South of Market Street (SOMA), San Francisco, CA Group members Della Wang, Jessica Westervelt, Takeshi Yamamoto Skills/Contributions Climate Resilience Master Planning, ArcGIS, Elevations, Plans, Model Making We propose four objectives to accomplish our vision of making the SOMA neighborhood more walkable and resilient by 2050: 1. Tunnel freeway underground to create SOMA Park; 2. Pdestrianize 4th Street; 3. To account for sea level rise, retrofit the first floor of buildings & create subterranean parks; 4. Decrease block sizes. 4th Street highlighted in red, SOMA park in green, areas projected to be under sea level rise in blue & existing transportation routes by site area in San Francisco (left). 4 Goal 1. Tunnel above ground freeway underground to create SOMA park to connect the neighborhoods severed by the highway. Build commercial and residential units around SOMA Park and 4th Street SOMA Park in 2050 Section Additional Commercial Additional Housing SOMA Park in 2050 The square footage / number of units that could be added was estimated by referencing the square footage of rooftops available. 4th Street in 2050 Elevation: buildings that may be built upon to accommodate population growth

5 Goal 2. Pedestrianize 4th Street to make the street more livable for residents and visitors. Eliminating vehicular traffic emphasizes the importance of using public transportation. Year 2020: 4th St Section Year 2050: 4th St Section Goal 3. To mitigate the effects of sea level rise, we propose to construct subterranean parks and relocate people from the first floor of impacted buildings by 2050 to prepare for 3 ft of sea level rise. Year 2030: 4th St Section

6 Goal 4. Reduce block sizes to revitalize parking lots and alleys for pedestrian use. Create easier access to both 4th Street and the new SOMA Park to make the area more walkable. 7 Library of Arches June July 2017 (3 weeks) Harvard GSD Career Discovery Program Site Area Four, Cambridge MA Skills Research, Hand Drawing, Modeling This proposal converts a parking garage into a library / civic engagement center in the heart of Cambridge. The project began with an exploration of entrances, thresholds between inside/outside space, and transformed into a study of modular units and the the symmetry of a Palladian plan.

8 Modular Unit Combinations Small 1 unit (72 sq ft) Medium 4 units (288 sq ft) Large units (1008 sq ft) These 1/32" = 1' scale study models investigate the relationship between entrance form and circulation. The 72 sq ft triangular modules can be combined to create hallways, atria, galleries, and intimate study rooms. I was drawn to entrances cut along corner edges to allow for diagonal passage and to draw people in from around the perimeter of the library.

The entrance of the library is aligned to a pathway from across the street in Bunzey Park, while the side entrance, as shown on the second elevation, is set across an alley on Portland Street. The positioning of the arches on the inside of the library reveal various formulations of small, medium, and large spaces such as study rooms, conference halls, and a media center.

This is the first solar canopy project proposed on a brownstone in Boston and can set a precedent for Back Bay, North End and South Boston residents to install solar canopies on the 5,649 brownstones in Boston.

12 GIS Mapping Exercises 79% of jobs in the New York County were filled by city residents this statistic indicates that it may be easier for those in New York County to get to work by walking or by taking public transit (Forman 2016). The two maps comparing the percentage of walkers and commuters who take public transit show that there are high numbers of walkers in the Downtown area and high numbers of people who take public transit in the Uptown area. The two maps show that the fraction of the youth population has a higher mean and variance than the fraction of the elderly population. There are noticeably more youths in the middle of the northwestern half of the county up to 32-41% of the total population are youths in the black areas of the first map, and 0-13% of the total population are elderly in the same highlighted areas in white on the second map. March 2016 BU UA654 GIS for Planners Course Site New York County, NY and Orange County, CA Skills Research, Data Analysis, ArcMap, ArcCatalog Mapping census tract data is a useful way to analyze who has access to services such as public transportation and how people move around in a city such as Manhattan, NYC. It can also be helpful to understand the elderly and youth population composition in places such as Orange County, CA.
