IIT Roorkee campus iit roorkee master plan WORKSHOP # JUNE 2013
IIT Roorkee HISTORY Indian Institute of Technology - Roorkee is among the foremost of institutes of national importance in higher technological education and in engineering, basic and applied research. Originally Roorkee college, it originated in 1845 to train youth to assist in the civil engineering work of India s first aqueduct over the Solani river, near Roorkee. On 21 September, 2001 the University was declared an institute of national importance, by passing a bill in the parliament, changing its status from University of Roorkee to Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee. FUTURE With India s increased global presence and the vision set forth by the Institution leaders, IIT Roorkee is well positioned to become a centre of excellence globally in research and teaching. The Director wants to craft a masterplan for the campus evolution for the next 25 years. The goal is to create an Academic campus that- Provides a positive environment for students and faculty to interact and collaborate and high quality of life. Lays the foundation for a thriving campus that prospers and can grow in a rational manner for the next 25 years. Becomes a role model to other institutes and universities in India, for masterplanning and intellectual spaces. Promotes a respect for past while embracing the future.
IIT Roorkee vision IN CONTEXT partnership with private sectors The number of students pursuing higher education is growing globally, but with strict government targets as a major driving force, India is leading the way. Globalization means that students are increasingly looking to study abroad to be prepared for the global marketplace and India is positioned to capitalize on this trend. attracting global talent World-class research institutions have a symbiotic relationship with private research and development companies which contributes to the economy of their communities
IIT Roorkee vision FOR ACADEMIA changes in learning methods Students expect more technology integration and respond better to interactive and collaborative exercises when compared to the traditional lecture style of teaching. changes in learning environments More flexible and diverse learning environments are required to meet the needs of 21st century students which means thinking outside the classroom.
IIT Roorkee vision FOR CAMPUS LIFE create a rich human-scale experience The experience of the pedestrian as he or she moves through the campus is paramount for the master plan. Great campuses are made of pedestrian environment that is secure, active and engaging and fosters ad hoc exchange between students, faculty and staff alike. masterplan that s flexible We need to consider flexibility as a major key for future growth. Focus on interdisciplinary teaching styles and collaboration spaces that provide a unique and in- depth education.
