2 WELCOME TO THE PARK THAT ALMOST WASN T Built on a historic, elevated freight line destined for demolition, the High Line has inspired millions worldwide as an example of how cities can reuse industrial spaces to create beautiful, hybrid spaces. Photo: Joel Sternfeld
3 HISTORY Photo: Jim Shaughnessy Mid-1800s to early 1900s Freight trains ran on street-level tracks, creating dangerous conditions for pedestrians. 10th Avenue became known as Death Avenue Due to the rise in trucking, use of the High Line declined through the 1970s and stopped altogether in Calls for its demolition soon followed As part of the West Side Improvement Project, the High Line opened to trains. By 1960, a section of the High Line running from Gansevoort St. to Spring St. was demolished due to low use. Inspired by the wild beauty that had taken over the High Line, Joshua David and Robert Hammond founded Friends of the High Line to advocate for its preservation and reuse as a public space The first section of the High Line opened to the public and was hailed as an innovative example of industrial reuse. Present day The High Line is now one continuous mile-long greenway that features 500+ species of plants and trees. The High Line is maintained, operated, and programmed by the non-profit conservancy Friends of the High Line in partnership with the NYC Department of Parks & Recreation.
4 HIGHLIGHTS Tiffany & Co. Foundation Overlook The best way to experience the High Line is to wander around and get lost in your surroundings, but if you are looking for suggestions, here are some of our favorite spots. 10th Avenue Square Offering views of the Meatpacking District and the Whitney Museum of American Art. This unique amphitheater offers views of 10th Ave., the Hudson River, and the Statue of Liberty. Between 25th St. and 27th St. Northern Spur Preserve The Rail Yards See what the High Line looked like before it became a park. This spur gives a glimpse back to our roots. Complete with 360 views of the Hudson River, Midtown skyscrapers, and the West Side rail yards. At 16th St. Photos: Iwan Baan, Liz Ligon Between 30th St. and 34th St.
5 EXPLORE Horticulture The High Line s plantings were inspired by the self-seeded landscape that grew for 25 years on the neglected rail tracks. Legendary Planting Designer Piet Oudolf chose species of perennials, grasses, shrubs, and trees for their hardiness, sustainability, texture, and color variation, with a focus on native species. Learn more about our plants at thehighline.org/gardens Free Programs Friends of the High Line creates fun and innovative opportunities for kids, families, and people of all ages to experience the High Line in new ways. Join us for tours, performances, live music, dance, well-being activities, and more. 8 FUNDED BY YOU You might be surprised by this, but it s people like you that make the High Line possible! As a nonprofit, we take care of it all from presenting art, horticulture, and community programs to maintaining and operating the public space. That s why we rely on donations from visitors and neighbors, which make up most of our annual budget. Support the park or become a member: thehighline.org/support Photo: Rowa Lee TD Bank is the Presenting Green Sponsor of the High Line. High Line Programs are supported, in part, with public funds from the New York City Council. The High Line Volunteer Program is supported, in part, by REI. High Line Art receives major support from Amanda and Don Mullen, The Brown Foundation, Inc. of Houston, and Charina Endowment Fund. High Line Art is supported, in part, with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature, and from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the New York City Council. Agora is supported, in part, by an award from the National Endowment of the Arts. Dorothy Iannone, I Lift My Lamp Beside the Golden Door is made possible, in part, by an in-kind donation from Colossal Media.
