1 Award Winners Circle of Merit Sport for Life Training Centre Number TEN Architectural Group The newly branded Qualico Training Centre will serve several stakeholder sports groups such as basketball, volleyball, badminton. This facility includes a heated parkade, a threecourt wide multi-use gymnasium with wood sports flooring, gym dividers, visitors lounge, high-performance strength & conditioning training space, multi-purpose training space, cardio-specific conditioning space, three-lane running track, spin and dance Studios, barrierfree change-rooms on each floor level, and public universal toilet rooms complete with power-operated adult change-tables. Although originally conceptualized as a highperformance strength and conditioning complex; on-going consultation with community stakeholder groups saw the facility programming adapted for access by Winnipeg s inner city schools and community groups, as well as integrating non-competitive fitness programming geared towards therapeutic exercise and everyday physical wellness. University of Winnipeg Leatherdale Hall BridgmanCollaborative Leatherdale Hall with its north and accessible campus entrance is an addition to a cluster of buildings including Leatherdale Hall, Wesley Hall and hopefully in the future a refurbished Sparling Hall. Leatherdale Hall includes Tony s a sister hall to Convocation Hall, meeting areas, a Commons, classrooms, amenities, and access to an existing elevator. A current challenge is providing in the Commons, where there is bleacher seating, an accessible environment that integrates accessibility, safety, options for use and shared spaces through careful discussions and problem solving with the accessibility community. 2017_access-award-program_guide_v3.indd 12

2 ACCESS A W A R D S Excellence in Universal Design and Accessibility University of Winnipeg Downtown Commons Sir Paul E. Martin Housing Raymond SC Wan Architecture LM Architecture Sir Paul Martin Estates was constructed as a 92 unit intergenerational project with 47 senior and 45 family suites. It is the first building of its kind in Manitoba where affordable housing for both seniors and families was constructed in one facility connected by common amenity space. Accessibility was incorporated throughout the entire building and grounds providing a model where families can live close to an aging parent or someone in need of care, and provides an opportunity for the residents to age in place. With varying degrees of accessibility throughout, at minimum, all suites are visitable with no step entrances, widened doorways and accessible washrooms. The design accomplishes a holistic approach to housing and a community model that is inclusive, not exclusive. The University of Winnipeg Downtown Commons is a $24.0M, 14 storey, 102 unit residential tower located just south of the Buhler Centre and west of the WAG. With a mixed income mandate, the Downtown Commons provides an opportunity for creating a true community with a wide-cross section of people from different cultural, economic and social backgrounds; it is a place built to respect and facilitate the diverse needs of people of all abilities. 3 Award Winners Circle of Excellence Winnipeg Soccer Federation Seven Oaks Complex Stantec Sports Studio The Winnipeg Soccer Federation North Project is a 162,000 sq. ft. facility located in the Garden City/Seven Oaks district of North Winnipeg. The design revolves around a fullsized indoor FIFA approved pitch divided into half and quarter pitch configurations. The design includes 14 field level dressing rooms, a 360 degree spectator concourse and Food/ Beverage amenities. The design is meant to provide a place to play and watch all levels of turf sports, functioning as a true multiuse facility for the Community. The facility was designed and constructed within a very challenging budget and schedule through a multi-partner funding platform. Japanese Cultural Centre of Manitoba Blacktie Architecture In 2014 the Japanese Cultural Association of Manitoba (JCAM) set its sights on continuing to improve its building s use in an effort to rejuvenate the facility. Completed in 2016, the Vestibule Addition was built to address several key building deficiencies. The addition features a new barrier free entryway complete with a ramp and automatic doors. A new coatroom area was also added to address the lack of a functional entry point to the building. The coatroom features built-in furniture with accessible features for ease of use by all. The exterior is comprised of economical materials that pick up design cues prevalent in Japanese architecture. 2017_access-award-program_guide_v3.indd 14

To better meet the needs of students and staff, Booth University College s front entrance was replaced with two gently sloping accessible walkways: the stairs, landscaping, and bike storage were replaced: and public washrooms were renovated to improve accessibility. Features include: Recessed LED strip lighting at walkways improving night safety: Detectable warning areas and contrasting pavers directing the visually impaired to the entrance: New Sliding entrance doors for hands-free operation: Integrated in-slab snow melting system Challenges included coordination of the entrance design with City of Winnipeg regulations, as it is located outside Booth University College property: phased construction while classes were in session, and unexpected hidden conditions behind the washroom walls RBC Convention Centre New Addition LM Architecture and NumberTEN Architecture Group To remain relevant in the growing national and international convention centre marketplace, the RBC Convention Centre undertook a strategic $181.6M, 31,600 s.m. expansion that included renovations to the existing building while almost doubling the size of the exhibition space within the facility. Incorporating accessibility and universal design features seamlessly within the Expansion project was one of the design goals and a significant challenge for the design team. The design concept is simple and intuitive for all, regardless of the user s experience, knowledge, or language. 2017_access-award-program_guide_v3.indd 15

5 Award Winners Circle of Excellence (continued) East Exchange Streetscape Upper Fort Garry Provincial Park HTFC and the City of Winnipeg HTFC and Cohlmeyer Architects Over the past four years WSP and HTFC, in collaboration with Public Works and CentreVenture, developed seven pedestrian-first streetscapes in the East Exchange. The variety of site conditions required significant time and effort to consistently meet requirements of the WADS. Borrowing space from the roadway, the streetscapes create generous, comfortable, and accessible pedestrian environments with high performance accessibility features, including: This important heritage site was redeveloped between 2009 and 2015 through citizen action and private and public funding. The Friends of Upper Fort Garry hired HTFC and Cohlmeyer Architects to design an interpretive park on the site, and established a project charter that included accessibility as a guiding principle. Shallow ramps are provided to each of the historic foundation markers, picnic tables are wheelchair friendly, and the frequent benches. The park has few signs, relying instead on inference and tactile messaging inscribed dramatically into metal and stone. There is also a free smartphone app that offers pages of audio and video information on points of historic interest. pedestrian crossings; shared pedestrian / vehicle roadways; seating areas; public art that considers wheelchair viewing height, tactility; and lighting improvements to improve legibility. RBC Convention Centre Winnipeg Klaus Lahr is a native of Germany, where he was educated and trained in the Hotel & Hospitality Industry. After working in 5 star European resorts and with a luxury cruise liner, Klaus immigrated to Canada in During Klaus early years in Canada, he worked for the Winnipeg Inn before opening his own business in Manitoba s north. Klaus then worked for the Radisson Hotel Corporation, followed by Holiday Inns. In 1993, Klaus joined the RBC Convention Centre Winnipeg as General Manager and has championed the role of the RBC Convention Centre Winnipeg as a social and economic hub. 2017_access-award-program_guide_v3.indd 17
