1 ADMINISTRATOR S WEEKLY REPORT # July 14 th through 20 th, 2014 CALLS FOR SERVICE % This Week 2014 YTD Change Fire % Aid % Other % Total % Last Week: On Monday, July 14 th DC Gerber attended a briefing with Mayor Backus regarding the oil/coal trains in Auburn. Senior Staff held their weekly meeting on Tuesday, July 15 th at Headquarters Station 31. On Wednesday, July 16 th the VRFA welcomed new firefighter recruits, Jeff Drozdowski, Justin Erickson and Mark Greenwalt. They will be assigned to the Training Division in preparation of attending the State Fire Academy in North Bend on Thursday, August 7 th. On Friday, July 18 th DC Swearingen attended the Fort Lewis EOC familiarization at Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM). This Week: DC Swearingen will attend the Zone 3 Operations Chiefs monthly meeting on Tuesday, July 22 nd at Valley Communications Center (VCC). On Tuesday, July 22 nd, Administrator Robertson will attend a meeting of the WA Fire Chiefs Legislative Committee and State Council of Fire Fighters on Regional Fire Authority legislation in Kent. Senior Staff will hold their weekly meeting on Tuesday, July 22 nd at Headquarters Station 31. DC Gerber will attend the City of Auburn Emergency Management Committee meeting on Wednesday, July 23 rd at One Main Street. 1

2 Administrator Robertson will attend the VCC Operating Board and Zone 3 Chiefs meeting on Thursday, July 24 th at VCC. The monthly Labor Management meeting will be held on Thursday, July 24 th at Headquarters Station Requests for Services / Customer Service: Commercial Fire: (Auburn) On Monday, July 14 th at 10:49 p.m., the Valley Regional Fire Authority with Kent RFA and South King Fire responded to a report of smoke from a building in the 3400 block of I St NE in Auburn. Arriving firefighters found a residential apartment charged with smoke and upgraded to a commercial fire response. Firefighters made entry and found a dryer fire that had extended to the rooms contents. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire and confirmed the structure was unoccupied. There were no injuries to firefighters or civilians. One resident was displaced due to heat and smoke damage. Fire investigators determined the fire started in a clothes dryer, resulting in approximately $30,000 dollars damage. Aid Call: (Algona) On Tuesday, July 15 th at 10:55 a.m., firefighters responded to an elderly male who was feeling weak and having problems breathing. The patient was evaluated by firefighters and then transported to an area hospital via private ambulance. Aid Call: (Lea Hill) On Wednesday, July 16 th at 9:40 p.m., firefighters responded to the Food Market on SE 312 th for an elderly male that tripped and fell. Patient had ad an injured left arm and pain in his right hip. The patient was transported to MultiCare Auburn Medical Center (MAMC) by private ambulance Aid Call: (Auburn) On Thursday, July 17 th at 11:20 p.m., firefighters and King County Medics assisted a young boy who fell off the back of a large construction backhoe. The patient landed on a grading blade at the rear of the backhoe causing injuries to his back and pelvis. The patient was stabilized at the scene and then transported to a local hospital for further treatment. Aid Call: (Lakeland Hills) On Friday, July 18 th at 7:30 a.m., firefighters assisted a female experiencing a rapid heart rate. King County Medics were called for advanced treatment. The patient was transported to MAMC by King County Medics. Minor Fire: (Pacific) On Saturday, July 19 th at 2:40 p.m., firefighters responded to an unknown type fire on a stove. Personnel arrived to find 2

3 that the occupants had already put the fire out with an extinguisher and the fire had been started by items left on the stove top. The engine crew checked the stove and the surrounding area to make sure there was no fire spread and finding no other damage left the scene to the resident. Aid Call: (Lea Hill) On Sunday, July 20 th at 9:30 p.m., firefighters responded to a male toddler with possible injuries from a fall. After a medical evaluation it was determined the child could be left in the care of his parents. Training Division Activities: Training hours for the week: Training hours for the year: 8,761.5 Training Activities Completed: JATC Probationary Test Completed Zone-3 Training Officers Meeting 3 New Hire Firefighters Completing Pre Academy Training 3 rd Quarter Defibrillation Extended Leave Retraining Completed Crew Level Drills at Gibson Hall (A and C Shift) Training Activities Projected: 3 nd Quarter Defibrillation Zone-3 Op s Chiefs Meeting-Training Officers Representative 4 New Hire Firefighters Completing Pre Academy Training Fire Marshal s Office: Business Inspections: ICC certified Deputy Fire Marshals (DFM) performed 17 initial and follow-up inspections of commercial and multifamily occupancies in Northeast Auburn. This week we will continue the inspection program in Northwest and Northeast Auburn. Deputy Fire Marshal Larry Upton surveyed industrial sections of VRFA to identify impaired Fire Department Connections (FDC s). Once identified, contacted responsible party to assure action is taken to repair or replace impaired systems. DFM s have identified over 15+ systems that had been targeted by thieves within the past two weeks. Deputy Fire Marshal Karen Stewart mailed out informational letters to local businesses about the recent damage to FDCs in the VRFA area. 3

Tenant improvements for AIO Wireless at the North Auburn Shopping Center, 1317 AWN. Temporary Use Permit for the White River Buddhist Temple s annual Bon Adori Festival. Temporary Use Permit for a classic car show at Grace Community Church. Fire Alarm system for the GRCC Trades Building under construction at th Ave SE. Lit Industrial is having a 250 gallon LPG tank installed at 801 Milwaukee Ave N in Algona. Belshaw Adamatic is having a new office and storage area constructed at th St NW, Suite 103. Boeing is replacing an electrical transformer at their Building. New Construction Inspections. 2 in the City of Auburn: Fire alarm inspection and test for a new portable classroom at Washington Elementary School, 20 E Main St. Underground piping hydrostatic test and flushing at Omega USA Storage Building #2, 3705 West Valley Highway N. 4

5 Public Education PIEO Staff conducted a Fire Stoppers intervention with a teen boy referred by the court system for an attempted fire set in a school. With the assistance of PIE Specialist McAuley, live fire extinguisher training was conducted for the employees of the Muckleshoot Bingo Facility. Posts were made to Facebook and Twitter regarding a burn ban and brush fire. PIO duties were completed for two simultaneous brush fires along Hwy 167. The VRFA participated in the Algona Days parade with E-38, the antique fire engine and Sparky. A fire safety booth was also staffed. Engine 34 crews changed several smoke alarm batteries for an older resident in need of assistance. Fire Investigation: There were 3 incidents requiring the services of the SKFITF Fire Investigators this week. An SUV in north Auburn was completely destroyed by fire. The older vehicle was fully-involved in fire upon the arrival of the engine company. The cause of the fire is under investigation. An apartment fire in north Auburn caused about $30,000 in damage to several units. The occupants were assisted with housing. This fire is under investigation. A semi-truck and trailer were severally damaged by fire in north Auburn. The damage to the truck is estimated at $10,000. The cause is under investigation. Planning and Logistics P&L received eight apparatus and three facility and small tool maintenance requests Captain Olson met with BC Marty Grisham from the Tukwila Fire Department regarding the Washington Survey and Rating Bureau process. BC Day submitted a final report for the VRFA s 2012 Assistance to Firefighter Grant (AFG) process. 5
