1 Masterplanning is the basis of successful space making; as a coherent, well structured masterplan is the key to the physical, social and economic success of new development. Whether it is the identification of development parcels, open space strategies, green infrastructure frameworks, or the establishment of design codes to guide development, Illman Young have a good basis of experience. Working closely with planners, architects, ecologists, transportation consultants and others, we help clients develop masterplans that respond to the design parameters and constraints set by the site itself, as well as accommodating the concerns of local communities. Our scope has ranged from consultations and the promotion of sites through the planning process, to detailed proposals for key individual public open spaces identified as part of the masterplan process. 2 The Ellesmere Wharf development seeks to provide a comprehensive range of leisure facilities and housing on the south side of Ellesmere, one of the principal towns in North Shropshire. Building upon the established tourism trade of the town and its canal network, the development proposes a 200 berth marina with associated boating facilities, 250 houses and a range of amenities including hotel, holiday cabins and touring caravan park. Illman Young were commissioned to carry out a full Landscape and Visual Impact Assessment (LVIA) as part of the Environmental Impact Assessment for the scheme. The findings of the visual baseline assessment were used to modify and improve the masterplan Heights and positions of buildings were altered to reduce the visual impact of the development, while key elements in the landscape; such as hedgerows and topography, were incorporated into the masterplan to create a suitable transition between the town of Ellesmere and the surrounding landscape. Illman Young advised on how the masterplan could be adapted to accommodate SuDS as an alternative to a heavily engineered solution to create meaningful elements within the development proposals. - Location : Shropshire - Scope : Work stages B-C - Client : Burberry Holdings Ltd. - Architect : Roberts Limbrick ELLESMERE

3 A major development including over 1000 houses, school, and mixed use development adjacent to the M5 motorway on the outskirts of Bristol. Illman Young were involved with this project from its initial concept and promotion of the site for removal from the Green Belt, as part of the South Gloucestershire Core Strategy review. Following succesful reallocation of the site for development, we worked as part of a multi disciplinary team to develop a site wide masterplan and open space strategy. Undertook Landscape Visual Impact Assessment and tree and hedgerow surveys to input to the detailed masterplan and outline application. Illman Young led on the Integration of a sustainable drainage system within the development, providing typical sections to ensure adequate spatial allowances within masterplan. 4 Previously a motor manufacturing plant, the Littlecombe site occupies a prominent location in the town centre of Dursley. Illman Young initially engaged to provide landscape input to masterplan for housing and commercial uses for outline planning consent as well as LVIA for EIA. Proposals to deculvert two water courses through the site allowed creation of green corridors, retaining and enhancing existing landscape and environmental features. Play strategy developed identifying suitable locations for LEAP s NEAP s and LAP s along with planting strategy and typical street scenes as illustrative information for DAS. Detailed design of for LEAP / NEAP, and one housing zone as part of hybrid application, to allow early commencement on site. Site sits within a valley and so cut and fill to create development plateaus along with issues with high levels of contamination had to be taken into consideration in development of proposals. - Location : Dursley, Gloucestershire - Scope : Work stages B-C - Client : St Modwen Ltd - Architect : Stephen George LITTLECOMBE

The site extends to circa 228 hectares and is planned to accomodate 4330 new dwellings and associated infrastructure. Illman Young were appointed to assist with the strategic landscape issues such as review of existing hedgerows, strategies for street tree planting, boundary treatments and public access. Discharge of the reserved matters for a range of POS from Town squares, LEAP s and NEAP s to large attenuation basins. 6 Illman Young were engaged to assist in the creation of a landscape led masterplan for a development of 250 houses, with commercial buildings and 60 bed hotel. Site included disused football grounds and associated derelict buildings along with an existing Lake. Illman Young provided a visual appraisal of the site, which determined constraints to development, to include extensive buffers to boundaries and restrictions on development heights. Initial block arrangements to provide attractive courtyard spaces and homezones. Public Open Space and Play strategy was developed centred around the existing lake, which was to be significantly enhanced. Working with the drainage engineers, we ensured that adequate spatial provision was made within the development for the SuDS system to include areas for infiltration, conveyance and exceedance routes.
