3 VALLOX OY A SHORT HISTORY OF THE COMPANY The roots of Vallox go back to the 1940s, when a state-owned metal industry company called Valmet began manufacturing fans for sawmills. In 1965, Valmet brought to the market a series of roof fans that could also be installed in residential buildings. The 1960s was also a time of intense migration to the cities and building of multi-storey apartment buildings with extract air fans. Later, the fans were integrated with cooker hoods. In 1971, Valmet s extract air fan production was moved to Loimaa. The energy crisis of the 1970s shifted the focus to the development of residential ventilation, and Valmet brought to the market an air heating system that proved to be a popular choice in family houses. Valmet s Loimaa factory was very innovative, and in the early 1980s it developed the first ventilation unit with heat recovery, which eventually became the most sold ventilation unit in Finland. However, in the late 1980s Valmet shifted its focus to the paper industry, and it sold the Loimaa factory. The company was then renamed Vallox (after Valmet Loimaa). Vallox concentrated on developing residential ventilation after selling the industrial ventilation operations to a Danish company. Since the 1980s, the company has focused on developing the energyefficiency of its ventilation system. The company has expanded its sales to the export markets. In 2002, a German family-owned company, TOP Air AG, bought most of Vallox and at present export sales account for half of the company s sales. 3

Ventilation matters Ventilation is often taken for granted, which is a serious mistake. Low-oxygen indoor air causes headaches, tiredness and other discomfort. Efficient ventilation ensures that the carbon dioxide level remains sufficiently low. Ventilation also removes emissions from assembly and interior design materials, which are not always perceptible to the human senses. Sufficient ventilation also prevents the accumulation of moisture due to showering, sauna, washing of dishes and clothes, and simply breathing. When the heating system is renovated, the building s insulation improved, or windows replaced, the old ventilation system will no longer be sufficient. Updating the ventilation system safeguards your home. Heat retention The indoor climate of the apartment (i.e. the air temperature, freshness, lack of draft, humidity level, and heat recovery from extract air) is given priority when energy-saving regulations are followed in assembly. The heat recovery system ensures minimum heat loss. Outdoor air enters the rooms without creating a draft, since it uses the heat recovered from the extract air (and in the coldest days of winter a post-heating radiator). On warm summer days, the heat recovery system can be bypassed. With highly efficient extract air heat recovery, the heat stays inside the house. Adjustment of the MyVallox ventilation units is based on four profile options: Home, Away, Boost, and Fireplace. Simply select the one that best suits your needs at a given time. The ventilation unit can be controlled not only with the fixed controller but also via MyVallox Cloud service. The cloud service gives you the option to control the ventilation of your house remotely over the Internet, for example by smartphone. The intelligent MyVallox ventilation unit can also be connected to the house automation system and to the home network. The MyVallox ventilation units have an integrated humidity sensor that monitors the relative humidity of air inside the house and automatically adapts the ventilation accordingly. This ensures high-quality indoor air in all conditions. The efficient heat recovery solution does not waste the heat of the outgoing extract air, but uses it to heat the fresh supply air streaming in from outside. Energy efficiency is further improved by boosting or reducing the ventilation, either manually or automatically through sensors, based on current need. CLOUD SERVICE By registering the unit to MyVallox Cloud service you can control it via the Internet connection. With the user s permission, also Vallox technical support can connect to the unit and monitor its functions remotely. HOME NETWORK You can also connect the unit to the home network and control it by computer or mobile device connected wirelessly to the network. HOUSE AUTOMATION You can connect the ventilation unit to the house automation through the Modbus. SENSORS AND ADDITIONAL SWITCHES HUMIDITY SENSOR MyVallox units have an integrated humidity sensor that boosts ventilation as needed, e.g. after a bath or shower. Ventilation level is also reduced automatically when excessive humidity has been removed. If needed, you can have an additional humidity sensor for rooms where the relative humidity of air fluctuates, such as in the bathroom. CARBON DIOXIDE SENSOR The ventilation can be fully automated with a carbon dioxide sensor. The sensor automatically boosts ventilation when the carbon dioxide level rises. This ensures that the indoor air remains fresh and oxygen-rich even when the house is fully occupied. ADDITIONAL SWITCHES You can install up to two external switches, e.g. one in the kitchen for turning on the Boost profile and another by the front door for changing the ventilation between the Home and Away profiles. Cooker hood boosting is also available when a Vallox KTXA cooker hood is used. The arched sliding mechanism, steel ball bearings, and stainless steel rails make the sliding glass easy to use. The large and optimally designed steam collection space provides excellent smell absorption. An efficient LED module provides even and non-glaring light to the entire cooker top. 11 CUTTING-EDGE VALLOX TECHNOLOGY The features of Vallox ventilation units have been carefully designed, built, and tested. The unit does more than simply replace air: it takes care of the residents also. The plate heat exchanger of the units never lets smells in the extract air back into the house, and the top-quality filtering keeps the supply air clean. The annual efficiency of heat recovery from the extract air is over 75%. The plate heat exchanger has no moving parts. It is quiet, and requires no other maintenance than washing. ENERGY-SAVING DIRECT CURRENT FANS All Vallox ventilation units have energy-saving DC fans. Their energy consumption can be less than half of that of AC fans. FILTERING OF DUST AND FINE PARTICLES Vallox ventilation units have G4+F7 outdoor air filters that efficiently filter out pollen and other fine particles. The extract air fan also has G4 coarse filters. Filters must be replaced regularly. For this reason, almost all Vallox models have been equipped with a handy maintenance reminder function. TESTED AND PROVEN AIRTIGHT The level of airtightness of each Vallox ventilation unit is tested during production. An airtight unit provides excellent heat and noise insulation. POST-HEATING IS HARDLY EVER NEEDED For most of the year, the low-energy Vallox ventilation unit heats the supply air to over 17 C merely with the heat energy recovered from the extract air. The supply air hardly needs any heating and often electricity is the wisest post-heating solution. SOPHISTICATED AUTOMATIC DEFROSTING Almost all Vallox models are equipped with an automatic MC defrosting function. The ventilation unit operates reliably and efficiently even in very cold weather. A preheating radiator is not needed, and both fans operate continuously. FIXED AIR FLOW MEASURING TUBES The total air flows of the ventilation system can be easily measured directly from the units, which have fixed air flow measuring tubes. disturb the peace and quiet of the house. Vallox ventilation units were the first apartment ventilation units in Finland to be granted an A+ energyefficiency rating by VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland due to their excellent annual extract air heat recovery efficiency. All Vallox ventilation units that are currently on the market meet the A+ energy-efficiency requirement of the new EU regulation No. 1254/2014 that took effect at the beginning of 2016 (the specific energy consumption (SEC*) < -42) in a cold climate. *SEC is a coefficient that indicates the ratio of energy used for ventilation to the heated floor area of the house (kwh/(m 2 a)

12 THE LOWEST VENTILATION UNIT ON THE MARKET FOR INSTALLATION ON TOP OF A WASHING TOWER Vallox 101 MV ventilation unit is designed for small and medium-sized apartments. It has a very low design: at best, the installation height with the ceiling mounting plate and condensing water outlet is less than 500 mm. The unit has quiet and energy-efficient RadiCal chamber fans with a very wide adjustment range (approx. 10 l/s l/s) and SFP of even below one. Advanced defrosting automatics do not change the supply and extract air ratio during the cell defrosting cycle. Defrosting is implemented with heat recovery bypass, eliminating the need for a preheating radiator that consumes a lot of energy. Defrosting automatics also recognizes the accumulation of frost on the exhaust air device. The air flow of a cooker hood that is connected to Vallox 101 MV always passes through the heat recovery cell. This ensures that the heat produced by the cooker is not wasted in winter and that using the boost function of the cooker hood does not increase the risk of freezing of the heat recovery cell. Thanks to its high efficiency ratio of Vallox 101 MV, the energy consumption of the post-heating radiator is so low that an electric radiator is always used. The radiator is connected to the mains with a power plug, and the electric box inside the unit does not need to be opened to implement other connections either. Installation Condensing water connection The patented Vallox Silent Klick water seal is delivered with the Vallox 101 MV unit. The water seal can be mounted on the bottom pool of the unit, or to save space, on the wall below the unit. The Vallox Silent Klick water seal prevents the noise caused by water when the water seal dries. Wall mounting supplies are always delivered with the Vallox 101 MV. Ceiling mounting plate is available as an accessory. The new type of ceiling mounting plate has a fixed white-painted covering strip, which makes the structure of the plate very robust. The ceiling mounting plate can be installed below the finished ceiling surface or it can be partly concealed inside the ceiling. Thanks to the covering strip, moulding is not necessary needed between the ceiling mounting plate and the ceiling. The unit is easy to push into place guided by the outlet collars, and it locks into the mounting hooks on the plate. The unit can also be removed from the plate. 12

13 CONTROL METHODS AND FEATURES Vallox 101 MV The Vallox 101 MV ventilation unit has e.g. humidity control and automated heat recovery bypass with cool recovery and automated ventilation boost (night-time cooling). The MyVallox Control panel is usually delivered with the Vallox 101 MV ventilation unit. The control panel can be used to control all functions and settings of the unit. Vallox 101 MV models can also be delivered without the control panel, in which case the setup and modification of setting is done on a computer using a LAN cable or a separate setup control panel. the Vallox 101 MV ventilation unit can be connected to a Vallox Capto KTC A cooker hood. Contact data of the KTC A cooker hood damper can be used to increase the air flows higher than the boost value, and to set the desired supply/extract ratio when the damper is open. With the MyVallox Cloud service, the Vallox 101 MV ventilation unit can be controlled using any mobile phone, computer, or tablet. Contact data of the Vallox Capto PTC EC cooker hood damper can be used to increase the air flows higher than the boost value, and to set the desired supply/extract ratio when the damper is open. MyVallox Cloud service Vallox 101 MV can be registered with the free and secure MyVallox Cloud service. The cloud service can be used for controlling the ventilation unit and for changing its settings. 14 EASY CONTROL MANUAL AND AUTOMATED CONTROL High-quality ventilation requires that the ventilation unit is easy and simple to use for all the family. This ensures the greatest possible energy efficiency of the ventilation. Vallox offers several control options from fully manual to fully automated. The latter makes use of various sensors. The MyVallox models can also be remote-controlled through the Internet by registering the unit in the MyVallox Cloud cloud service, or within the home network through other devices in the network such as a computer or tablet. Several types of Vallox ventilation unit can also be connected to house automation. House automation All Vallox ventilation units can be controlled through voltage messages (0-10 VDC). MC models can be connected to the Modbus bus using the ProControl control panel. MV models can be directly connected to the Modbus bus. KNX can be used with a bus adapter. MyVallox Cloud cloud service Myvallox Home home network MV models When the ventilation unit is registered with the MyVallox Cloud cloud service, the unit can be controlled from anywhere through the Internet. Subject to the user s permission, Vallox s technical support can remotely examine the functions of the unit. The unit can also be managed via the home network. A clear user interface shows the user the ventilation status at one glance. The user can also examine statistics on indoor air quality and other factors. Appropriate ventilation saves money In standard ventilation, the air inside the building is replaced at least once every two hours. As the relative humidity of air increases e.g. due to showering or drying clothes, the ventilation must boosted. On the other hand, the effi ciency of the ventilation can be lowered e.g. when the house is empty. When the effi ciency is halved, the energy consumption of ventilation drops by more than half. This means that adjusting the ventilation based on the need is worthwhile. The ventilation can be adjusted manually, in addition to which many Vallox ventilation units also have a handy week clock. Full automation is possible with humidity and carbon dioxide sensors. 17 Outdoor air ducts Exhaust air ducts Supply air ducts Extract air ducts AN ENERGY-EFFICIENT ENTITY The planning of ventilation affects the energy-efficiency of your home more than you may think. Vallox ventilation units are energy-efficient and recover heat efficiently. However, attention should be paid to several other factors in addition to the ventilation unit. When the Vallox BlueSky ducts are used, they can be installed completely inside the vapour barrier e.g. on intermediate walls. In such a case, the temperature of the air that passes through the ducts remains stable, and the tightness of the house is not weakened by feed-throughs. The location of windows and protection against the sun have an impact e.g. in minimizing cooling need. When the carbon dioxide and humidity sensors are used, the efficiency of the ventilation changes automatically depending on the need. This way, ventilation is never left too high for too long e.g. after using the sauna. When the fireplace combustion air is channeled directly from outside to the fireplace, the combustion air does not cool the room. Geothermal heat and a passive circuit can be used for heating the air in wintertime, and for cooling the input air in summer by connecting an MLV duct radiator to the ventilation unit. VALLOX FILTERS ENSURE CLEAN INDOOR AIR High-quality filtering is especially important for people with a susceptibility to respiratory problems. The Vallox ventilation unit filters pollen and other impurities from the outdoor air effectively. Only the original Vallox filters ensure the recommended filtering efficiency and air penetration, guaranteeing that the unit works at its best. The wrong filter type can increase air leaks from the structures, or at worst can cause moisture damage to the structures. Filters must be replaced often enough. Filters should be replaced twice a year, but in some cases they might need replacing more frequently, for example in areas with a high traffic volume. TIP Replace the filters at the start of summer and again at the beginning of autumn. 17

18 HEAT RECOVERY SAVES ENERGY AND HELPS TO PROTECT THE ENVIRONMENT Controlled heat recovery from the extract air heats up the outdoor air before it is supplied to the living premises. This means that heat recovery helps to save lots of energy, which translates into more money left in your pocket. New, high-efficiency ventilation units are capable of heating the outdoor air to +17 C for most of the year with the energy that is recovered from the extract air. Additional heating is then not needed very often. For that reason, Vallox heat-recovery ventilation units use electrical heaters the pay-back time for a water circulation heater would be extremely long. Also, because there are no moving parts, maintenance of the heat exchanger is fairly simple and easy. THE EN308 STANDARD VERSUS ANNUAL EFFICIENCY t = t supply air t outdoor air t extract air t outdoor air = x % In the EU, the thermal efficiency of a heat-recovery ventilation unit is measured according to EN308. In short, this involves testing the unit at only one temperature point: the extract air at 23 C and the outdoor air at 5 C, for example. But this does not say much about the true performance of the unit. Everybody knows that water starts to freeze below 0 C. In EN308 testing, the outdoor air is never lowered below 5 C. All Vallox units are tested not only with EN308 but also with annual efficiency of heat recovery in mind. Annual efficiency indicates the average amount of heat in extract air, over the course of a year, that heat recovery can use for heating supply air. This depends not only on the efficiency of heat recovery but also on the functioning of the antifreeze and on the weather conditions. For that reason, special attention should be paid to the annual performance of the unit. 18

19 DEFROSTING INTELLIGENTLY IN VALLOX WAY There are different methods of defrosting the heat exchanger. One of the most popular methods is to use a preheater. However, the heat exchanger does not know where the heat is coming from, so it just transfers heat from one side to another. For that reason, about 65% of preheater energy is transferred to the exhaust air. In other words, a 1000W preheater will waste 650W of its heating energy in exhaust air that is blown outside. Another way to defrost is to stop the supply fan during defrosting. In new houses which are built to be airtight, this method can lead to problems with getting replacement air. In Vallox ventilation units, defrosting is achieved by intelligently bypassing the heat exchanger during defrosting and using the heater to warm up the supply air. This way, 100% of the heater s energy is transferred to the supply air and there is no wasted energy. DEFROSTING WITH A PREHEATER VS. VALLOX ON-DEMAND WINTER FUNCTION + 6 C - 8 C - 21 C + 21 C - 21 C + 21 C Preheating runs in cycles Vallox on-demand winter function is activated only when needed The preheating resistor heats the outdoor air before it passes through the heat recovery cell. Even 65% of the heat generated by the preheating resistor is lost to the exhaust air. The preheater runs in regular cycles when it is turned on whether defrosting of the heat recovery cell is necessary or not. Ventilation units equipped with the Vallox on-demand winter function have no preheating resistor. However, some models have an additional heating resistor, which heats the air only after it has passed through the heat recovery cell ensuring that 100% of the heat is going into the apartment. In addition, the Vallox on-demand winter function is based on temperature measurements taken at multiple points in time. In this way, unnecessary defrosting is avoided, leading to higher annual efficiency. 19
