5 Direct_Fired Double effect bsorption Chiller & Heater Water (refrigerant) is vaporized in low temperatures in low pressures. Water saturation 1. Vaporization action of the evaporator Heat transfer tube bsolute pressure Refrigerant Refrigerant pump Vacuum Temperature In higher mountains, water is vaporized in temperatures lower than 100 C. In other words, as the pressure of water decreases, water will be vaporized in lower temperatures. The absorption chiller is manufactured by using such principle. LiBr water solution (the absorbing solution) has the absorption property similar to that of salt. s shown in the above picture, the heat transfer tube is installed inside an air-tight container that contains the refrigerant (water), and the chilled water is allowed to flow through the tube and the inside of the container is kept at the vacuum level of 6.5Hg, then, it is possible for the refrigerant to be vaporized in 5 C and, for the resultant vaporization heat to chill the chilled water inside the heat transfer tube. 2, bsorption action of the absorber Chilled water Heat transfer tube Cooling water Refrigerant (Liquid) LiBr water solution s shown in the picture, when the vessel containing the refrigerant and the vessel containing the LiBr water solution are connected with each other, the vaporized refrigerant is absorbed into the LiBr water solution, allowing the vessel containing the refrigerant to stay in a constant pressure. Refrigerant pump Evaporator Refrigerant Solution pump LiBr water solution bsorber When vaporization continues in the evaporator, the steam partial pressure goes up gradually, causing the vaporization temperature to increase also. When the container (the absorber) which contains the LiBr water solution is connected to the evaporator, the vaporized refrigerant is absorbed into the LiBr water solution, subsequently allowing the vaporization pressure and temperature to stay at a constant level. In order to remove the absorption heat generated during the absorption of the vaporized refrigerant, the heat transfer tube is installed inside the absorber to allow the cooling water to flow inside it.

6 3. Generation of the Dilute Solution (High and low temperature generators) 4. Condensation action of the vaporized refrigerant (Condenser) Low temperature generator High temperature generator Evaporator bsorber Flowing from the absorber Cooling water Medium concentration solution Heating by the refrigerant Vaporized steam heat refrigerant Heating by the combustion unit Condenser Low temperature generator High temperature generator When the absorption action continues, the concentration of the LiBr water solution becomes thinner and, subsequently, incapable of absorbing continuously any more. So, it needs to be concentrated as below. The dilute solution of the absorber needs to be allowed to flow separately into the high temperature generator and the low temperature generator. The dilute solution flowing into the high temperature generator is heated up by the combustion unit, and, as a result of it, generates the high temperature refrigerant steam, and gets concentrated. The high temperature refrigerant steam, generated in the high temperature generator, flows through the heat transfer tube, installed inside the low temperature generator, and heats up and condenses the dilute solution that is sent into the low temperature generator. In other words, the low temperature generator plays the role of a condenser for the high temperature refrigerant steam generated in the high temperature generator, and is also heated up by the latent heat of condensation of the high temperature refrigerant steam. Thus concentrated thicker solution goes back to the absorber and continues its absorption action. Both the refrigerant steam generated in the low temperature generator and the refrigerant condensed inside the heat transfer tube of the low temperature generator flow into the condenser to be completely chilled and condensed due to the cooling water that flows through the heat transfer tube of the condenser, before going back to the evaporator. The refrigerant solution, thus recovered into the evaporator, is vaporized again to keep the chilling action going on. 4 Century 5

15 Direct_Fired Double effect bsorption Chiller & Heater The Century s chilling and heating unit boasts of the perfect protective function and the automatic volume control unit. 1. Reduction of fuel consumption Low temperature generator Heat exchanger 4. Perfect safety protection units The machine can be used safely as there are various protective and safe devices for the situations, such as shut-off of the chilled water, overfreezing of the refrigerant, high temperature of the solution, high temperature of the high temperature generator, lowering of the levels, abnormalities with the dilution control, automatic start and stop, combustion safety, fuel system, and pumps. bsorber The parallel flow method is adopted to pursue the energy saving, and, at the same time, remove the concern about the crystallization of the solution. In the patented (Parallel flow), the solution is divided and sent by pressure into two separate generators, helpful in reducing the volume of the solution in the solution heat exchanger by about 1/2, making it possible to save huge energy and provide more room for design. dditionally, the concentration of the solution at the inlet of the absorber is low, so, there is no need for concerning about decrystallization. * Fuel consumption Gas: 1Kcal/Nm 3 : 0.272Nm 3 /h RT 12,000Kcal/Nm 3 : 0.249Nm 3 /h RT 15,000Kcal/Nm 3 : 0.199Nm 3 /h RT High temperature generator 2. Safe structure of the high temperature generator 5. Wide scope of operation Generally, when the cooling water temperature goes down, the inside solution becomes thinner in its concentration, and, at the same time, the refrigerant solution volume is lowered, leading to the cavitation in the refrigerant pump. In order to prevent such situation, the automatic level control unit is installed to make it possible to operate in a wide range of temperature conditions. 6. Easy to operate and no qualification for handling the machine s the pressure during the operation will not exceed the atmospheric pressure, the system is not handled as a boiler and does not require an additional person to manage it (The pressure at the high pressure section is about 570Hg, so it can be used safely). The pressure at the high temperature generator is determined by the concentration of the absorption solution inside the low temperature generator. In the serial flow method, the design can be structured in a way to make the pressure inside the high temperature generator lower than the atmospheric pressure as the thinnest solution is transferred to the low temperature generator. Due to such reasons, this system is not handled as a boiler, and there is no qualification for operating it. nd also, there will be no such case where the high pressure switch of the high temperature generator is activated to make it impossible to operate the system. High temperature main body Low temperature generator bout 570Hg Combustion unit The high temperature generator is structured in a straight-lined wall chilled by solution. In other words, there is no change in the direction from the combustion unit to the outlet for the combustion gas, so there is no need for concerning about damage to the machine due to the non-combustion gas remaining inside. 3. doption of the crystallization prevention device There is no need for concerning about crystallization of the solution as the crystallization prevention device is installed to prevent the concentration from increasing further when the solution concentration inside the machine reaches a certain level. Even in a condition where the solution temperature is low (risk of crystallization), there is no need for concerning about the crystallization of the solution as the balance cycle, which can make the solution thin in its concentration, is formed automatically. Thinnest solution High pressure section High temperature generator

16 7. Compact and light-weight s it can be supplied in a single unit, air-tightness is secured firmly, so there is no need for concerning about any leaks, while the installation area of the machine room can be made small. In the serial flow method, there is no need to send the solution from the high temperature generator to the low temperature generator, so the high temperature generator can be installed at the inclined bottom part of the shell of the main body in order to make the width of the unit narrower. Shell of the main body Pump dditionally, the system can be supplied in a single unit, without being divided, so the reliability of the strict air-tightness test performed at the factory can be maintained, without the need for concerning about leaks, making it convenient to install the system in the machine room and also carry out the installation at sites. 8. Short time for starting and dilution s the serial flow method is used, the solution volume and thermal capacity of the high temperature generator is small, making it possible to start shortly, and carry out dilution shortly also after the stopping. 9. Operation with much scope s the system has copious refrigerant volume, the system can be operated without reducing the solution circulation volume in response to the load conditions, and is also configured in a way to meet the requirements in a wide range of operation conditions. Such characteristics can allow the operation to take place, with much scope available, as the concentration and temperature of the solution is lowered. 10. utomatic volume control unit It provides a good control by detecting the temperatures of the cool and hot water at the outlets in response to the variation in load, as it uses the electronic fuel control valve and the proportional action temperature controller as well. 11. doption of the special spray method There is no need for concerning about the blockage in the nozzle and the corrosion in the heat transfer tube as the special spray nozzle is used both for the evaporator and the absorber, making it possible to allow the refrigerant and the solution to be sprayed evenly without being inclined toward a specific direction. 12. The latest purge unit The automatic purge unit will perform the purge process continuously always during the operation, making it possible to keep the internal vacuum level and enhance the chilling efficiency. 13. Harmless corrosion inhibitor The generally used corrosion inhibitors are harmful, while the Century s bsorption chiller uses the lithium nitrate that is absolutely harmless to the human body, allowing the repair inspection to be carried out safely. 14. ttachment of the repair valve (For all models) The repair valve is attached at the inlets and outlets for the refrigerant and solution pumps, making it possible to disassemble, inspect and replace the pumps easily without extracting the solution and refrigerant. 15. MICOM control based automatic control panel suitable for the intelligent buildings. The control panel is installed at the front side of the chiller, and the DDC(Direct Digital Control) method, which uses the 16-bit micro processor, is used for the controlling. ll the control states can be displayed in LCD in which the back light is embedded, making it possible to allow the controlling and displays to be operated at the sites. What can be displayed through the site control panel, HMI DISPLY, includes the temperatures of the chilled water and refrigerant, the temperature of the solution dilution, the temperature of the chilled water at the outlet, the state of the valve opening, the operation time, the accumulated count of starts and stops, the state of the status monitoring contact, and the status of other various alarms, while such status information will be displayed in a circular way automatically with fixed intervals (time). s the control unit counicates with the computer for the parameters such as set values, schedules, and the units that generate the alarms, so alteration can be made. There are various operation functions such as the operation from the control panel itself, the remote operation that allows the central control to perform a remote surveillance and control, and the scheduled operation that allows the automatic operation to take place according to the operation schedules from 1 day or 1 week up to years. In order to control the data conversion by unauthorized people, other than the chiller operator or its manager, which could cause a critical impact on the operation of the chiller, a password is used to make sure the operation is carried out safely. 14 Century 15

Century scope of supply 2. To insure and correct flow from the chiller, balancing valves should be installed at the chilled (hot)water and cooling water outlets. Be sure to install pressure and temperature gauges referring to this schematics. 3. Be sure to install drain valves at the lowest part of the chilled water, hot water, cooling water pipings in order to be able to exhaust the water of the pipings, and connect drain valves with suitable drain discharge ditches. 4. Be sure to install air vent valves at the higher water and hot water pipings than water chambers of the machine. 5. Expansion tank must be installed in chilled water and hot water piping line if closed water cycle is adopted. 6. Be sure to install a 10 mesh strainer on the inlet side of the piping for chilled water, hot water and cooling water. 7. Effective supports are necessary for water and gas pipings not to put those weight on the machine. 8. rrange the piping considering the space for extracting the tubes and for opening the water chamber 9. Cooling tower must be installed at the place where is free from pollutants in atmospheric air. (Such as sulfurous acid gas contained in sootysmoke from chimney, aonia and hydrogen sulfide exhausted from ventilation fans of buildings, sewage treatment plants and chemical plant.) 10. Cooling water inlet temperature should be kept above 20 C by cooling tower fan capacity control or by providing bypass water line like as above piping schematics. 11.
