Violets continue to increase in popularity, having developed from a few hundred to thousands that exist in a wide range of color and type. These books explode the myth that African violets are difficult to grow and provides the reader with the know-how to make the most of this delightful and popular plant. The African Violet Handbook (David & Charles, 2003) is written by Tony Clements, one of Britain s leading African violet specialists. This helpful guide contains clear practical advice and includes drawings and photographs. He gives tips on care and cultivations from his own experiences. His advice will help develop specimens which have a long growing season. For a different reading style try Melvin Robey s African Violets: Back to the Basics, Your Questions Answered (AuthorHouse, 2006). The reader will find answers to 250 common questions which the author is commonly asked. Black and white photographs and drawings accompany the text. This third book by the author combines his knowledge of horticulture in this question and answer style. African Violets: the Complete Guide (Crowood, 1998) includes chapters on the African violet s history, development and classification. It also gives practical information and advice on propagation, general care, hybridization and the prevention and treatment of pests. The authors are highly experienced growers, hybridists and exhibitors, writing in a non-technical style. Violas and Violettas (HarperCollins, 1994) describes 36 varieties in detail, each with its own individual characteristics. Author Rodney Fuller provides a concise description of each entry, as well as useful information on cultivation and propagation. Color illustrations accompany the text. Roy Coombs, former president of the International Violet Association, shows his love of the flower in Violets: the History & Cultivation of Scented Violets (Batsford, 2003). History of all four groups of violets is included with the list of cultivars and cultivation information. Both color photographs and water color drawings accompany this book. Joyce and Kent Stork were long-time contributors to African Violet Magazine with their For Beginners column. You Can Grow African Violets (iuniverse, Inc., 2008) features these columns which have been adapted and edited. The most novice grower is provided with a step-bystep guide whether the goal is simply to keep violets alive or to exhibit the plants in competitive shows. 6 Affiliate News African Violet Society of Greater Tulsa The African Violet Society wishes everyone a Happy New Year and invites all who are interested in growing violets to join us at our meeting on Monday, February 17th at. Don t forget our February 22nd annual show and sale here at the Tulsa Garden Center. There will be all kinds of plants for sale, as well as growing supplies. Refreshments are available at 6:30pm. Members will be planning the upcoming Spring pond tour. The Tulsa Herb Society Amanda Howard of Amanda s Greenhouse will be the February 11 th speaker for the Tulsa Herb Society. The meeting will be held at 10:00am. Ms. Howard will be bringing show and tell geraniums, begonias, and some new perennials, as well as providing tips on maintaining healthy plants. Visitors are welcome. National Association of Parliamentarians, Oil Capitol Unit Parliamentary Workshop March 21, 2014, 1:30pm 4:30pm or March 22nd, 2014, 12:00pm Same information will be presented at both workshops. Join members of the Oil Capital Unit of the National Association of Parliamentarians and receive valuable knowledge that will aid in conducting efficient, productive meetings, understanding terms, procedures and qualifying duties. A Q&A will also be included. Topics to be covered include: Officers duties, Vocabulary/ definitions, content and form of minutes, protocol, and presiding duties. A nominal fee will be charged to cover the cost of materials. Workshops will be held at Tulsa Garden Center.
