1 October 2017 GROW Tulsa Garden Center News Trumpet Honeysuckle 2435 S. Peoria Ave Tulsa, OK If a tree dies, plant another in its place. Carl Linnaeus Like Tulsa Garden Center on Facebook The Deep South is well known for its wonderful gardens and balmy climate that allow gardeners to grow just about anything. It s interesting, however, that several Asian imports (Camellias, Azaleas and sweet scented Confederate Jasmine) are the plants one often associates with classic Southern gardens. These charming plants have been so popular for so long, I suspect many Southern gardeners think of them as native. Other Asian imports are far less popular, however. Japanese Honeysuckle and Kudzu quickly come to mind. Fortunately, our Tulsa winters keep Kudzu from successfully invading our woodlands and area gardens. Unfortunately, our winters are no defense against Japanese Honeysuckle. There is hardly a fence row in eastern Oklahoma that is free from this weedy vine. Scent may be Japanese Honeysuckle s one redeeming feature. It s sweet and powerful. Michael Dirr, the dean of woody plant experts, describes it this way: The fragrance of Japanese Honeysuckle is quite strong. It can be sensed from a car traveling 65 miles per hour. Michael is being conservative. One could probably catch honeysuckle s heady scent traveling at any speed. Despite its great scent, Japanese honeysuckle is still a botanical alley cat, far too aggressive for many urban gardens. It can rapidly reach 30 feet in length and choke-out less vigorous plants. There is a honeysuckle, however, with a sterling pedigree. Its name is Trumpet Honeysuckle (Lonicera sempervirens). It s an outstanding American native. Occasionally one will see it tagged as Coral Honeysuckle in the nursery trade. Many plant species carry two or more common names. Thanks to Carl Linnaeus, 18 th century Father of Botany and namesake for the Linnaeus Teaching Garden, we now have a scientific naming system that assigns a Latin genus/ species name to plants and animals. However, I like the common name Trumpet Honeysuckle which accurately describes its red, two inch long trumpetshaped flowers. This deciduous twining vine grows to a modest length of 10 to 12 feet, a manageable length for a garden fence, trellis or arbor. There are several delightful Trumpet Honeysuckle cultivars. I grow two in my garden: John Clayton and Blanche Sandman. Both produce lots of flowers on easily managed vines. John Clayton, named after the famed 17 th century colonial botanist, produces bright yellow flowers in May and off and on until frost. Blanche Sandman produces lots of dark red flowers with yellow throats. Both vines (like all Trumpet Honeysuckles) attract lots of humming birds. Trumpet Honeysuckle grows well in virtually any well drained soil. It loves full sun, but tolerates a half day of shade without a significant drop in flower production. If pruning is needed, it s best to do so within six weeks following May bloom. However, do not prune Trumpet Honeysuckle in the late fall or winter. Doing so will remove floral buds and reduce spring bloom. Barry Fugatt is Director of Horticulture at the Tulsa Garden Center/Linnaeus Teaching Garden. 6 Mark your calendar to help celebrate the 10 th anniversary of the Linnaeus T Gardening by the Book Shade Gardening When considering trees or shrubs to plant in the fall, additional shade in your yard may be a high priority. Any gardener with a shady spot will welcome these ideas for the next growing season. Mixing common plants and the more unusual ones can create a special and unique retreat. When choosing the trees and shrubs that provide the shade-or the plants underneath- these books can be of help. Gardening in the Shade (Horticulture Books, 2004) has descriptions of plants receptive to shady areas including perennials, trees, and shrubs. Advice is given for dry shade, light and groundcovers. With over 300 photographs, this is based on expertise culled from Horticulture Magazine. Information on the array of plants include flower and leaf description, propagation, bloom period, hardiness and good companions, which can aid all gardeners. Glorious Shade (Timber Press, 2017) shares the techniques, design and maintenance tips that are keys to a successful garden or lawn. This gives practical advice and inspiration on bringing color to dark areas. A useful calendar of seasonal tasks, a plant directory and inspiring design ideas are included. Nearly half of the book is a listing of plants with in-depth growing details. on common problems. It includes basic topics such as pruning trees and preparing the soil. Anecdotes and plant lore are pleasant reading which complements the indepth advice. Ten Lists for Beautiful Shade Gardens (Lone Oak Press, 2011) with 52 top ten lists, is written in a do it yourself and straight forward manner. The explanations provide strategies for low maintenance yet beautiful gardens. They are helpful and practical with money saving shortcuts and smart plant picks. Lists of garden design tips and indepth care are included but with minimal photographs. Mary Moore Tulsa City-County Library Making the Most of Shade (Rodale, 2005) features more than 200 plants that grow well without direct sunlight. Covering the basics of planning, planting, and problem solving, it is for both novice and seasoned gardener. The first half shows how to use shade tolerant grasses and groundcovers effectively. The second part is devoted to an encyclopedia of shade-loving plants. It has helpful at-a -glance tips, complete information and many color photographs. The sensible and uncomplicated tricks can help any gardener. For a comprehensive guide with relevant advice and suggestions for growing in the shade, try The New Shade Garden (Stewart, Tabori & Chang, 2015). Author Ken Druse discusses the plants needed and offers guidance 6 Tulsa Garden Center News
