Abraham Darby, Falstaff, Gertrude Jekyll, Golden Celebration and Mary Rose all tied for second place. There was no winner in the Old Garden Rose class. Nine different roses were listed as favorites. Our favorite Large Flowered Climber is Fourth of July. Altissimo came in second place followed by a tie for third by Berries 'n' Cream, Candy Land and Joseph's Coat. We had 61 roses listed as disease resistant. Hot Cocoa received the most votes. Second place was a tie between Secret, Julia Child, Ketchup & Mustard, Iceberg, Crimson Bouquet and Dick Clark. Third place was a tie between Fame!, Firefighter, Molineux, Strike It Rich, Distant Drums, Cinco de Mayo and French Lace. Double Delight may have been knocked out of first place as our favorite rose in our previous surveys but it still placed first in the Most Fragrant category! It was followed closely by Firefighter. In third place was Mister Lincoln and Secret. Fourth place was a tie between Yves Piaget, Barbra Streisand and Chrysler Imperial. Join the Celebration! By Sue Streeper, streeper@cox.net Plans are in place to celebrate the honoring of the Inez Grant Parker Memorial Rose Garden at the Huntington Library in San Marino. 3 President s Message By Bob Kolb, bobkolb@cox.net Happy New Year! 2014 is an American Rose Society National Convention Year for us. I hope that you were able to enjoy the holiday season with friends and family as well as to take some time to relax and rejuvenate. There are going to be many opportunities to contribute to San Diego Rose Society activities this year. I hope you are looking forward to an exciting year of rose activities. Many of you were able to enjoy our Holiday Party, awards presentations, and new officer installation on December 14. Special thanks to Linda Clark and Ralph Reagan who hosted this event in their lovely home again this year. It was a wonderful sunny day so several of us were able to eat outside and enjoy their lovely rose garden. After a great lunch by Top Hat Catering, the 2013 awards were presented and the new officers were installed. The 2013 Little Rose Show winners this year, for the fourth year in a row, were John & Barbara Lester. The heavy Novice Little Rose Show Trophy was retired this year and was replaced with a very nice plaque, thanks to Bill and Elaine Ornelas. The newest name to be added to the plaque was the 2013 winner, Jeanne Skinner. The 2013 Rosebud Award winners were Christine and Rand Allan. Robert B. Martin, Jr. was awarded the Bronze Medal. Congratulations and thank you to the winners for their many contributions to the San Diego Rose Society. Your new board members were installed by Roger English, nominating committee chairman. The new board members are Bob Kolb, president; Sue Streeper, past president; Gary Bulman, vice president programs; Jim Price, vice president membership; Christine Allan, recording secretary; Ken Huff, corresponding secretary; Joan Sieber, treasurer; Bill Ornelas, Elaine Ornelas, and Kris Napora, members at large. Terry Harris joins the Rose Garden Trust Board. I look forward to working with the new board. Special thanks go to the outgoing board members Bob Martin, Roger English, and Jeanne Skinner. All of them have major 2014 convention responsibilities so they will remain very active this year. Sue Streeper organized a trip to the Huntington Library on Saturday February 1 to attend the Great Rosarians of the World (GROW) awards. The January/February issue of American Rose contains an article on GROW West 2014 awards on pages 82 to 84. The Inez Grant Parker Memorial Rose Garden in Balboa Park will be receiving a GROW award that day. The details of this trip were provided to you earlier via Constant Contact messages and are repeated in this issue of Rose Ramblings. I hope that you will be able to join us in this celebration. Thanks to Ruth Tiffany for managing our fertilizer sales again this year. By this time our order has been placed and paid for, and production by Growmore is underway. Ruth will announce pickup times after the order is delivered in late January or early February. Assisting Ruth with pickup operations may be a volunteer opportunity. Stay tuned for more information. Ruth Tiffany, 2014 convention chairperson, continues to lead our convention planning efforts. Several volunteers visited the Town and Country Hotel and Convention Center on December 10 to see the facilities that we will be using for our convention. Some good national coverage of our convention is included on pages 76 through 80 in the January/February issue of American Rose. Thanks to Ruth Tiffany, Paula Taylor, Reed Nessel, Bob Martin, and Sue Streeper for creating the material. Great work! Attendees are registering and we expect the pace to increase soon. A rose show schedule is now available on the San Diego Rose Society website and soon will be available on the convention website, arosefamilyholiday.com. More volunteers are now serving in leadership positions and are starting to recruit their support teams. I am serving as volunteer coordinator and plan to provide a more detailed description of the convention volunteer organization in the February issue of Rose Ramblings. This will include description of the duties of vacant volunteer positions and the times volunteers are needed. Did you see the article in the Home Section of the Union-Tribune by Karen Dardick on Saturday, December 28? Thanks to Roger English for working with Karen on this article. 3

7 January and Early February Rose Care By Gary Bulman, The tasks for this time of year are many and varied beginning with pruning, selecting new varieties for the garden, organic fertilization, mulching and beginning a watering schedule. Pruning for many is a daunting task with thoughts of I ll kill the bush. This seldom happens and hopefully you have attended our annual pruning demonstration the first Saturday of each year at the rose garden in Balboa Park. Information is also available from our many consulting rosarians at the January 27 th rose society meeting. New roses will arrive at area nurseries during December and January. This is the best time for you to evaluate your current plants and should you be disappointed with their performance now is the time to replace them. This doesn t mean to destroy them, as someone else may be looking for just this plant so they may be given to a neighbor or friend or taken to the rose society meeting to find a new home. I have also had success moving a rose to a different location in my garden where it has thrived. First, prepare the new location, prune the bush to make it easier to handle and then gently remove it from the ground keeping the root ball as intact as possible thus retaining many of the tender feeder roots. This is best done with a large-bladed shovel, gently cutting into the soil completely around the drip line. Replant in the new location, filling in open spots with soil and watering the bush in with one tablespoon of fish emulsion to one gallon of water. This will remove air pockets and settle the soil around the bush. For the planting of a new rose, refer to Roger English s excellent article on preparing a new site for additional plants in last month s Rose Ramblings. When these tasks have been completed, move on to an application of an organic fertilizer. I really like the Bio-Start procured through Ruth Tiffany and the San Diego Rose Society. It has replaced the Ada Perry I used to use and seems to work as well or better at much less cost. I gently work in two cups per large bush (sometimes three) and one cup on miniatures around the drip line. As the soil warms, the organics in the fertilizer become alive providing nutrients for the bush. Additionally I may apply Magnum Grow and/or fish emulsion at one tablespoon per gallon of water to give the rose a bit of a jump start. The next task is the application of two to three inches of mulch to your garden. The mulch will hold back the growth of weeds and also lessen the amount of water as it shields the ground from the hot sun that is sure to arrive. I do this every year and am amazed that last year s mulch has disappeared, working its way into the soil. Check your soil for moisture and if rain has not materialized, begin to water. New growth will begin and tender new canes with lush leaves and foliage will appear. Aphids will not be far behind and can be washed off with a steady stream of water. Should you be inclined to spray, do so after the new growth has reached three or four inches long. Roses provide much more growth than is required for a well-balanced bush so thumb pruning (gently removing unwanted growth while it is tender and easy to remove) can be used to keep the center of the bush clear. 7
8 Special Program from Floral Association Anita Clevenger and Sacramento s Historic Rose Garden Please join us at San Diego Floral Association s (SDFA) first general meeting of the new year on Wednesday, February 19, at 1:30 p.m. in Room 101, Casa del Prado, Balboa Park. We will enjoy refreshments and a chance to meet other members and guests at 1:30 and begin our program at 2:00. Our speaker, Anita Clevenger, is the volunteer manager of Sacramento s Historic Cemetery Rose Garden, a collection of roses popular from the gold rush through the Victorian era (roughly 1850 to 1915). For eleven years, she led tours, conducted training, and coordinated volunteers at this unique garden that houses more than 500 antique and old garden roses gleaned from cemeteries, homes, and other sites. Many of the source plants survived for decades with little water or care. This all-volunteer project is known internationally for its efforts to preserve roses that otherwise would be lost and has been honored with inclusion in the Great Rosarians Garden Hall of Fame. Anita Clevenger is a Sacramento County lifetime UC master gardener and a board member of the Old City Cemetery Committee and Heritage Rose Foundation. She writes the garden column for Inside Publications and also contributes to newsletters and rose journals for the World Federation of Rose Societies, the Heritage Rose Group, and the New Zealand Heritage Roses Group. SDFA is most fortunate to have Anita as our speaker. Please don t miss this unusual opportunity open to our members and guest gardening friends.
