Jan 20 7:30pm BROS Board Meeting - Belinda Krause s Home President s Message I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving with family and friends. Is there such a thing as too much turkey and pumpkin pie followed by hours of football?! I think not! Christmas and Hanukkah are soon to follow. May I be one of the first to wish all a very Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah! As we enter the New Year, we greet snow birds and new members with enthusiasm. We would like to hear from you. What would you like to see, do or learn, about your orchids in the coming year? Please feel free to attend a Board Meeting, speak to or a Board Member to share your ideas. BROS members should have received pre-sale tickets for our February show, IN LOVE WITH ORCHIDS. Show tickets are a good gift for those on your list for whom it is difficult to shop. The tickets also help save 40% of the cost to attend our orchid show. If you need more tickets, call a Board Member for extras! We are in crunch time for our show! Now is the time to start grooming your plants for judging. Who knows how many CCM s and AM s are lurking in our collections. Get your plants ready. It s good to brag, a little! See you at the meeting. Dave Hogaboom
3 The Orchid Scentinel Page 3 ORCHID TIDBITS December in your Orchid Collection Tasks for December: Water judiciously and well. Protect cold sensitive genera. Provide extra potassium and magnesium Repot flowered out plants - be sure they are secure. December Climate Data Average high: 77.5 Average low: 62.2 Average mean: 69.9 Average rainfall: 2.18 December marks the beginning of the serious dry season in South Florida. While this additional dryness provides relief from the autumn rains that can bring so many fungal problems, December is also the month of the shortest day lengths. This contracted period of light, on the contrary, reduces severely the drying potential for our plants. We must make sure, therefore, that we do not aid the dark side of the force by improper watering. Water early in the day so your plants have as many hours as possible to dry, and water heavily when you water, allowing longer intervals between watering to dry plants thoroughly. Always be sure that your plants really need water before you roll out the hose in December. Remember to use at least one of the standard tests for dryness: the finger dug slightly into the media test or the newly sharpened pencil coming dry like a knife from a well cooked custard, or test by hefting a pot that you know the weight of, both wet and dry and be sure that it has attained sufficient lightness. When you are sure they are dry water them until you are sure they are very wet, then let the drying air of December do its magic to ward off leaf spotting diseases. Excerpted from Florida Orchid Growing: Month by Month by Martin Motes In Sympathy. Our sincere condolences and prayers go out to Rafael Romero, of Plantio la Orquidea, and his family on the tragic loss of their son Henrique Rafael Romero this past month. A condolence card and donation to M.A.D.D on behalf of all BROS members has been sent.

You can find the answers to your questions by bringing the invalid plant to the AOS Visitor s Center and talking with the "Orchid Doctor". Experts are on hand Wednesdays from 10:00 am 11:30 am, Saturdays, 1 4 pm and Sundays 1 4 pm. Judging at the AOS Visitors Center and Botanical Garden The West Palm Beach judging center holds its monthly meetings at the AOS Visitors Center and Botanical Garden. On the fourth Saturday of each month at 2 pm, the judges get together to evaluate the flowers brought in for their consideration. This is a wonderful opportunity for orchid lovers to observe the judging process. December 5-6, Holidays in Bloom at AOS Carol Holdren, AOS Judge, and Bonnie Temperly, floral designer, will show you how to work live orchids into holiday decor. Photographer Greg Allikas will present a lecture in conjunction with the "Vanishing Florida" exhibit, and Dominique Rice will feature her paintings, sculpture, photography and orchids. Supplies from Green Barn Orchid Supply will be available for purchase. December 5, January 3, 2010, Vanishing Florida Sixteen photographers of Photo Salon show their works depicting our changing state. The exhibition is a tribute to the eroding beaches and failing sea-walls, vintage buildings and architecture, endangered wildlife, small towns, and the natives who have long called this state home. Among the 16 photographers whose works make up this exhibit is noted orchid photographer, Greg Allikas.
