Orchids, having been with the firm since he was 13 years old. He started out working in the greenhouses, repotting, staking, fertilizing, packing and shipping, later getting involved with exhibiting orchids and other facets of the business. In 1985, the firm incorporated and Michael became its Vice President. He is now Vice President in charge of growing and hybridizing. Mike has traveled extensively around the world to keep abreast of the newest trends in Vandaceous hybridizing. He has spent several months at the R.F. Orchids growing facility in Thailand learning techniques for the propagation and production of orchids for the international market. In his career with R.F. Orchids, Mike has also participated in many domestic and international orchid shows including several World Orchid Conferences and the prestigious Chelsea Flower Show. One of Mike s favorite activities is the design of private orchid gardens. He was also instrumental in developing R.F. Orchids Orchid Camp, a series of educational classes about orchid growing in South Florida. Mike s program will center around one of his passions, Orchids in the Landscape with tips for all of us to use around our own homes. R.F. Boca Raton Orchid Society is in the forefront of assisting the AOS Gardens achieve a rare distinction, a true botanical garden! Imagine a botanical garden administered by a consortium of orchid societies. If we all pull together, we can accomplish this in the near future. Currently there is a plan in which the South Florida Leadership Council, part of the AOS, including societies from Jupiter to Miami to Naples, would sponsor the operation of the garden. It is a bold undertaking. However, it is easily within our reach. All we ask is a monetary pledge to fund the initial endeavor. Cards will be available at the meeting for you to fill out. Any amount will do, from fifty dollars to whatever you feel comfortable pledging. Donations to the botanical garden are tax deductible. Help our beautiful AOS Garden become a true Botanical Garden. Your pledge is greatly appreciated by the many people who have and who will soon be strolling through the magnificent grounds. Help our garden grow! 4 Page 4 The Orchid Scentinel American Orchid Society News: March 30, 2009 May 3, Quilt Show: Orchids, Jewels in the Jungle Our 7th annual quilt show will be held at the American Orchid Society, This juried show will display orchid motif quilts, wall hangings and wearable art. There will be an informative lecture on quilts on Saturday, April 18 at 2:00. Admission is free to the public. For information on entering the quilt show, please contact Valerie Smith. Judging at the AOS Visitors Center and Botanical Garden The West Palm Beach judging center holds its monthly meetings at the AOS Visitors Center and Botanical Garden. On the fourth Saturday of each month at 2 pm, the judges get together to evaluate the flowers brought in for their consideration. This is a wonderful opportunity for orchid lovers to observe the judging process. The Orchid Doctor is In, Wednesday, Saturday, and Sundays Having problems growing your orchids? Blooms fall off? Are your plants sick? You can find the answers to your questions by bringing the invalid plant to the AOS Visitor s Center and talking with the "Orchid Doctor". Experts are on hand Wednesdays from 10:00 am 11:30 am, Saturdays, 1 4 pm and Sundays 1 4 pm. Contact Valerie Smith at the AOS, or vsmith@aos.org for details on all events. HELP SAVE THE A UPDATE S GARDEN As members of the AOS Public Garden Committee, Carol Holdren, Rhonda Heide, Judy Bailey and myself have been making the rounds from Martin County to Naples and East Everglades in Homestead and a lot of societies in between, giving talks and answering questions about the closing of the gardens. We have received pledges from many individuals, orchid societies and garden clubs. I am extremely proud of the Boca Raton Orchid Society membership, and the way they stepped up and demonstrated their support. The results of this campaign will be announced at the April 16 th Wine and Jazz at AOS. This will be a fundraiser for AOS. We will have an auction, a book signing by Alec Pridgeon, the Quilt Exhibit, wine and hors d oeuvres. This will be a great time to visit the garden and greenhouse. I am currently accumulating items for the auction so if you have anything you would like to contribute or know someone who would, please let me know.
