Guide to EXPO 2015 What is EXPO? Expo 2015 is an enormous exhibition, a theme park, which will be held from 1 May to 31 October in Milan. The theme is "Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life", so it will not only be about food, but each country will be able to customise its own theme. The topic lends itself to many possible points of view, ranging from the lack of food to the eating habits of each country, the sustainable use of resources and the discussion on GMOs. All participating countries will use the best of their technologies and resources to address the topic. Exhibition Site The area hosting the EXPO is over one million square metres (about three times the Parco Sempione in Milan) and has the shape of an island. The two main streets are perpendicular to each other and are called Cardo and Decumano, legacy of the castrum, the Roman camp that was characterised precisely by its orthogonal layout and streets perpendicular to one another. The Decumano The main street is the Decumano that runs through the entire fair site from east to west for about one and a half kilometres and hosts on both sides the national pavilions of Participating Countries. Participating Countries Of the 145 Participating Countries (representing 94% of the world population), 60 will have a self-built space and others will be present in a cluster. There will also be spaces dedicated to companies and international and non-profit organisations. 94 countries have presented a specific project on the theme of nutrition and three international organizations are also participating: the UN (United Nations), the EU (European Union) and CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research). 53 countries have their own exhibition pavilion with a custom theme related the general EXPO theme. Each country will exhibit information material, may offer and sell food and organise interactive activities, events and exhibitions. Participating countries must comply with a set of rules in building their space: Use of sustainable and recyclable materials Construction of temporary buildings which are easy to dismantle at the end of the event Reduced energy consumption Particular attention to greenery and the landscape Half of the area must be occupied by open space The axis represents the union of the place of consumption of food, i.e. the city, with that of its production, i.e. the country. The Cardo The other street, the Cardo, is approx. 350 metres long and at the intersection of the two streets is the main square at the centre of the EXPO, called Piazza Italia, which represents the area where Italy meets all countries of the world. Piazza Italia In the area of Piazza Italia our best nutrition practices meet with Italian culture, traditions and typical food products. On the four sides of the two main streets are the most important structures of the event: the Mediterranean Hill, the Lake Arena, the Open Air Theatre and the Expo Centre.
The Mediterranean Hill Situated at the eastern end of the area with a set of stairs leading to the top about 12 metres high: this will be the most panoramic point. All around are plant species and crops typical of the Mediterranean area. From here it will be possible to see the canopies that will protect visitors in the pedestrian areas from the sun and rain. You can stroll through a Mediterranean forest of holm oaks, cork oaks, cypresses and oaks. Overlooking the square is also an olive grove and there is a Pavilion where you can discover the importance of agricultural and nutritional biodiversity and the urgent need to adopt new consumption habits. The Lake Arena Situated at the northern end of the exhibition, it consists of a small lake surrounded by terraces for approximately 3,000 seated spectators and a square of 28,000 square metres, which can accommodate 20,000 people and approx. 100 trees arranged in three concentric rows. It is the largest open space of the EXPO and represents the big Italian lakes known and loved worldwide. In the middle of the lake is a fountain and the "Tree of Life", where water features and fireworks, but also concerts and shows on floating platforms, will be set up. On the bottom of the lake, dark pebbles create a mirror effect. This lake is fed by the Villoresi canal, an irrigation channel of the river Ticino, which represents the Waterways of Milan but will also provide water for all the green areas of Expo. The Open Air Theatre At the southern end of the area is the Open Air Theatre which will host the most important open-air events: concerts and official ceremonies. The theatre has a capacity of approx. 11,000 people seated on both the terraces and on the lawn. The stage roof has solar panels that will be used as a source of renewable energy for the shows. Here from Wednesdays to Sundays, with a separate ticket, you can see the show Allavita! of the fantastic Cirque du Soleil. The EXPO Centre At the western end of the fair is the EXPO Centre, which will host the main indoor events. Inside is an Auditorium with 1,500 seats which will host concerts, workshops and conferences; here there is also a relaxation area for visitors called Open Plaza and a Meeting Area with meeting rooms. Italian Pavilion Italy will be exhibiting its products of excellence, its culture and its traditions related to food and nutrition in this pavilion. It consists of exhibition areas arranged along the Cardo and of Palazzo Italia, the official building of the Italian State and Government, which is the institutional meeting place between the Organising Country and Participating Countries. The Exhibition Areas reserved for the European institutions are situated in front of Palazzo Italia, representing the close relationship between Italy and Europe. This is the only structure that will remain after the dismantling of Expo 2015 and will represent the hub of technological innovation at the service of the city. The Palazzo is based on a landscape architecture, an urban forest, shaped like the canopy of a forest. It is an almost zero-energy building, thanks to the contribution of the photovoltaic glass that covers the structure and the concrete with photocatalytic properties. This cement, in fact, in contact with the sunlight, captures certain air pollutants, transforming them into inert salts and thus contributing to freeing the atmosphere of smog. Palazzo Italia includes: space for events on the ground floor, exhibition, conference and catering areas on subsequent floors, including a VIP restaurant on the fourth floor and a panoramic terrace. The four floors of the Palazzo represent the four strengths of Italy with regard to the Expo theme. First floor: there will be an exhibition on the "power of know-how", namely creativity, excellence and innovation. Second floor: the power of beauty, namely Italian tourism, quality of life and landscapes. Third floor: the power of the limit, namely the tradition and he management of food resources.
Fourth floor: the power of the future, on the biodiversity of Italy. Cascina Triulza - Pavilion of Civil Society Cascina Triulza is an old rural construction that was already present on the exhibition site, a farm that takes Milan back to its rural origins. It has been renovated for the occasion and occupies an area of 7,900 square metres. The Civil Society Pavilion is situated here and includes the following areas: Exhibition Area: spaces in which organisations have their own exhibition area, promoting their capabilities in terms of cooperation, sustainable development, health and nutrition. Event Area: consisting of an auditorium with 200 seats, a workshop and laboratory and a 1,700 square metre open courtyard which can be used for educational activities and artistic and cultural events. Market Area: area reserved for small holders, businesses and organisations promoting products attentive to the environment and to human rights. Work Area: an area with workstations to create networking and collaboration between third sector players, visitors and staff of the Expo. The Clusters One of the novelties of Expo 2015 are the Clusters, i.e. for the first time, countries are not grouped in collective pavilions by geographical area but rather according to specific themes and food chains. The nine themes of the clusters are: rice, cocoa and chocolate, coffee, fruit and vegetables, spices, cereals and tubers, bio-mediterranean, islands sea and food, arid areas. 1. The Rice Cluster Abundance and safety This Cluster will have a setting reminiscent of the rice fields, with colours and aromas that change according to the growth of the plants and the water expanses. Rice is one of the first cereals cultivated by man 10,000 years ago, starting from a spontaneous species in China. Rice then spread around the world and in order to be able to fully appreciate its biodiversity one must know its history and all its varieties. In this cluster it will therefore be possible to get to know the stages of the history of rice, through the stories of different countries and the innovations introduced during its history. The pavilions are set in an agricultural landscape with a spectacular alternation of expanses of water, and you are thus immersed in a veritable rice field with different varieties of food. More or less hidden messages emerge just under the water surface between the various water tanks. Stories, myths and legends and various information related to the world of rice engage visitors in an enthralling information game. Rice is the primary source of nutrition for the entire world population, thanks to its adaptability and its ability to grow anywhere. This area also houses the photographic exhibition di Gianni Berengo Gardin that starts with the production of rice, from planting to harvesting, up to its industrial development and processing. In this exhibition you can also discover the life of the growers and that of the weeders. 2. The Cocoa and Chocolate Cluster The Food of the Gods The chocolate that we love so much comes from the seeds of the cocoa fruit. The Cluster is set in a jungle because the cocoa tree grows in plantations in tropical and subtropical areas. The facades of the buildings are made of a lightweight and light-coloured fabric which, on opening, provides a glimpse of the interiors, a metaphor of the need to protect such a precious and aromatic product. In the common area are poles of different heights and shapes that represent the trees under which cocoa grows. Patterns and images on panels tell the history of cocoa from cultivation to processing and transportation. Here there is an area for tasting and relaxation and with a gastronomic show. There is also an events area constituted by long seats arranged in a fan shape, designed to be used both during shows as well as to foster communal use of the area throughout the
day. A area of greenery is set up with benches and tables to accommodate those walking along the Decumano and those coming from the pavilions. Cocoa represents energy, fertility and life and is the basis of the economy of more than thirty developing countries. 3. The Coffee Cluster The power of ideas Coffee comes from the seeds of tropical plants in Africa and Latin America. The Cluster is set in large coffee plantations precisely in these two continents. The architecture of this area is reminiscent of the highest branches of the trees under whose shade the coffee plants grow, and the pavilions are a metaphor of their trunks. Here you can learn about the various steps leading to the cup of coffee, starting from the bean, divided into five stations: greenhouses, transport, toasting, bar, meeting area. The itinerary already begins outside the Cluster, in the green area set up with coffee plants and a beautiful photographic exhibition by Sebastião Salgado. In the catering area you can taste the coffee, while in the events area there are events, presentations and shows. There is also a market area where you can buy products of the world of coffee coming from different countries. 4. The Fruit and Vegetables Cluster In this area you can find various fruit trees, which recreate a veritable orchard. The intense aromas released by the trees invite visitors to discover their origin, history and legends. There is also a central square with a wooden canopy reminiscent of a pergola. You can buy products in the market area that represents as an element of liaison between this area and the spices Cluster. 5. The world of spices In this Cluster, you can follow the spice routes crossing continents and oceans, smell their aroma and imagine them as an ingredient in dishes, a medical remedy or a cosmetic product. A map in fact helps the visitor on this journey in search of spices in a sequence of "sensory areas" with tastings, installations and events. 6. Cereals and Tubers - Old and new crops A valley of cereals and tubers leads to the discovery of these fruits of the earth and the various stages of their cultivation, with a large area where you can taste the dishes of participating countries. The architecture of the area is reminiscent of a large fireplace that houses an events area and an area dedicated to theme dishes. Although there are over ten thousand varieties of cereals and tubers, only a few have continued to be cultivated for over two thousand years. 7. Bio Mediterranean Health, beauty and harmony The Mediterranean unites three continents, Europe, Africa and Asia, but also religions, cultures and civilizations. This area illustrates the essence of Mediterranean cuisine, the value of fusion and the integration of different peoples. The structure is based on the image of the Mediterranean city and is built around a large semi-covered square with four areas dedicated to local products. The floor is painted in different shades of blue to recall the nuances of the sea. You can see some show cooking and various foods being prepared. It is a story exhibitionthat includes the story in pictures, the literary story and the film story. 8. Islands, sea and food This Cluster has a marina setting with the sounds, colours, panoramas and smells typical of marine landscapes and of the oceans. The idea of this area is to feed the soul through the senses. Showering of water, crunching of gravel and knocking on wood accompany the visitor throughout the visit. The two pavilions accommodating participating countries are united by a large bamboo canopy. The outside walls of the pavilions are filled with famous phrases, from Homer to Conrad, from Christopher Columbus to Darwin and Melville. At the end of the itinerary there is a catering area and an events area, a cube on which submarine images are projected, giving
the impression of really being at sea and enjoying incredible sensory experience, appreciating the beauty of the islands and perceiving the wonderful but fragile biodiversity. 9. Agriculture and nutrition in arid areas This Cluster is inspired by the sandstorm and represents the challenge of living in and exploiting the land of arid and semi-arid areas. At the entrance is an oasis with a water fountain in the common area. Here you can watch events and shows to explore the characteristics of arid areas. Hundreds of translucent cylinders descend from the ceiling to represent the sandstorm. The pavilions take the form of stones that are uncovered on entering this metaphorical sandstorm. At the end of the itinerary is a market where you can buy the incredible fruit that these areas, despite the lack of water, are able to offer. Thematic areas There are also five areas in the exhibition representing the physical places that interpret the theme Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life through multisensory and educational exhibition itinerariesand are located at the main entrances and in other key areas of the Exhibition Site. The themes of these areas are: the nutrition history of man, food and the future, food and children, the link between food and the environment and between food and art. 1. Pavilion Zero The Pavilion reproduces a piece of the Earth's crust, raised above the ground. Through a system of contour lines, the Earth's surface is reproduced with mountains, hills and a central valley. Pavilion Zero provides a veritable journey to the centre of the Earth, where you can explore the interior of the Earth's crust through a number of caves rebuilt in almost total darkness. A scenic itinerary takes you through the history of how man procured food from the beginning of time to the present day and will address the big issues of the future of the planet. The Pavilion consists of twelve caves or rooms and a last one which is dedicated to nutritional best practices. The structure has a 23 by 50 metre facade in walnut and beech, made of drawers and inspired by the artificial memory systems of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. On the back a documentary on the history of the first crafts is projected: hunting, fishing, farming and breeding. A huge 23 metre tall tree penetrates the ceiling and shows room of plant cultivation, where there is a spice archive. Then there is the area is dedicated to breeding, where you can find a giant Noah's Ark with fifty or so full-size polystyrene and resin animals. One room is characterised by the presence of fifty or so authentic bota bags and jars dating back to one thousand years B.C. Another room is dedicated to modernity and industrial development. Then there is the room of the global food stock exchange with a big screen. On the opposite side is the room of hyper food consumption, with a floor covered with synthetic waste, on which scenes of films are projected, such as that of Alberto Sordi eating spaghetti in "An American in Rome". Through a crack you can get a glimpse of the negative effects hyperconsumption, such as the social cost caused by obesity. The final part is dedicated to cultivation in harmony with nature for a hopeful future. 2. Future Food District This deals with the future scenarios of the food chain for the preservation, distribution, purchase and consumption of food. You can try interactive shopping in the Supermarket of the future, where everyone can be both producer and consumer and use fun technology use in the Kitchen together with a professional chef. 3. Children's Park An area dedicated to children, who will be the food producers and consumers of the future. Here there are games and information to engage and entertain children. At the entrance, every child is given an album, with surprises and insights on what can be found in the park. 4. Biodiversity Park The area is dedicated to biodiversity and covers an area of 8500 square metres and includes the park, a theatre
and two pavilions. External environment The outdoor area of the Park represents a journey through Italy in five stages with five different landscapes: Alps, Apennines, Po Valley; Tavolieri highlands, coasts and islands. Each landscape is represented not by individual trees but by plant associations. Biodiversity Exhibition Inside the Park there is an exhibition that illustrates biodiversity through nine circular and four secondary environments. You enter in the first section entitled "Introduction to the theme" and from here you can choose the clockwise (from the past to the future) or anti-clockwise (from the future to the past) itinerary. The sections are: Introduction to the theme, Wild: biodiversity before the advent of agriculture, Domestication, cultivation and agro-biodiversity, The big voyages, Crop rotation, The green revolution, Beyond the green revolution, Innovation, technology and a future that is already now, and therefore?. The Pavilion of organic and natural products In this area you can learn about organic production through the story of a sustainable agriculture supply chain. The Pavilion consists of six thematic areas: Seeds (cereals, legumes and derivatives), Fruit (vegetables and processed produce), Oil and wine, Livestock products, Herbalism (supplements, wellness), Services (technologies, training, certification). The theatre at the centre of the Earth This theatre will host meetings, conferences and talk shows every day. Important guests from all over the world will include university professors and personalities related to the green world, the environment and food. Arts&Foods. Rituals since 1851 This is the only exhibition itinerary that is not in the Expo Fair but at the Milan Triennale and explores the representation of food and foodstuffs in art from the nineteenth century to the present day. Now all we need to do is wait for the two EXPO 2015 inaugural events: 30 April 2015 in Piazza Duomo in Milan with a concert of Andrea Bocelli, author of the EXPO anthem entitled The strength of a smile, together with the Orchestra and Chorus of the Teatro alla Scala. The event will be broadcast live on Rai Uno. 1 May 2015 at the Exhibition Site with the ribbon cutting ceremony, officially inauguration in the presence of President of the Republic, the Prime Minister, etc.
