How can you simplify your planting and use of materials? How do you balance materials and furniture against plants and gardening space? 13 Garden Design Planting Design across the Seasons Summer Saturday 29 June 10.30am to 12.30pm Tutor: Peter Thurman Planting Design across the Seasons is a series of lecture-based sessions designed to help you make the best use of plants for year-round interest. This two hour session will focus on making the most of summer and will include reference to specific planting at RHS Garden Wisley. Not only will the course focus on designing for seasonal colour but it will also look at the progress of planted borders at Wisley to see how we can build interest into planting throughout the whole year. Fee: RHS Members 35, Non-RHS Members Event code: 9608 New Garden Design Trends Tuesday 16 July 10.30am to 4.30pm Tutor: Andrew Fisher Tomlin As much as our gardens contain plants and trees that may have been with us for all the time we have been gardening, it is difficult to ignore new trends in garden design. Many of these are associated with new technology, new plants and plant varieties and the challenges of ecology and environment. This one day lecture-based course examines the new trends that are affecting our gardens and investigates key areas where people are making changes in the design of their gardens. We ll look at some of the new ideas that were seen at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show and RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show this year and make a prediction of how we might garden in twenty years time. Fee: RHS Members 95, Non-RHS Members Event code: 9609 Contemporary Planting Design Tuesday 15 October 10.30am to 4.30pm Tutor: Andrew Wilson For decades the English flower garden has been the option of choice around the world, luxuriant and romantic but costly and time consuming to maintain. More recently, ideas have been evolving in part as a pragmatic response to lower maintenance needs and in stylistic terms as times change and new generations come into garden ownership. As a reflection from the Arts and Crafts movement the flower border is becoming a thing of the past as more naturalistic planting takes over our gardens whereas in some urban locations plants are virtually absent as minimalism and conceptualism grow in popularity. This course aims to address these changes aiming to help the keen gardener deal with new demands. Fee: RHS Members 95, Event code: 9611 Non-RHS Members Includes a light lunch and refreshments Garden Design Designing for Drought and Dry Gardens Tuesday 6 August 10.30am to 4.30pm Tutor: Peter Thurman One of the biggest challenges facing our gardens is a lack of reliable supplies of water. The hosepipe bans of 2012 were just the latest in a series of issues surrounding water supply and so this lecture day focuses on the key design steps we can take towards dealing with drought and dry gardening. As well as designing planting for dry conditions, we ll look at designing in water conservation and investigate waterwise planting techniques. Fee: RHS Members 95, Non-RHS Members Event code: 9610 Planting Design across the Seasons Autumn Saturday 19 October 10.30am to 12.30pm Tutor: Peter Thurman Planting Design across the Seasons is a series of lecture-based sessions designed to help you make the best use of plants for year round interest.
