2 RHS Garden Rosemoor Courses and Workshops Welcome to our 2017 programme of Courses and Workshops, full of inspiration and the very best in horticulture. Contents Courses and Workshops at a glance 4 Horticulture 8 Within this brochure you will find a wide range of courses and workshops to increase your experience and knowledge of plants and gardens, from pruning and propagation to art and photography. Whether you enjoy creative days out or short courses for building your skills, we hope you find something to suit you in the following pages. The courses offer the opportunity to learn alongside RHS horticulturists and experts in their field in the amazing, unique setting of RHS Garden Rosemoor. Many of our practical skills demonstrations and workshops have been very popular again, so we continue to offer rose, apple and shrub pruning as well as grafting. Hedge laying returns after a break of several years, and for the galanthophiles we have a special Snowdrop Day. If you need help with propagation, hanging baskets or polytunnels then we have an event for you. Some of our wild meadows were cut using scythes last year on a beginner s day course, and if you d like to have a go, then turn the pages to August to find out more. If you re a complete beginner when it comes to gardening, then our eight part Beginner s Gardening days are just for you and can be booked individually, and we are again offering our one day Help I ve Got a New Garden and our Beginner s Garden Design workshops. We have been asked for more creative courses, so we are offering lino-printing, pen and wash, and hand embroidery for the first time, and more watercolours and Japanese Ink Painting too. Both photography courses sold out in 2016, so we are adding two one day courses for those photographers at intermediate level who would like to improve their close-up skills with Ross Hoddinott, one of the UK s leading outdoor photographers. Whichever workshop you choose, you can be sure to be inspired by the beautiful surroundings. 5 Horticulture Horticulture Rose Pruning Thursday 12 January or Thursday 2 February 11am to 12.30pm Tutor: Philip Scott (RHS Team) This comprehensive demonstration will cover the pruning and training of all roses, from climbers through to ramblers, shrubs and modern varieties. We will also look at nutrition and disease control, and offer some handy tips on establishing roses. This demonstration will take place outside so please come prepared with boots and warm clothing. Winter Wednesday 18 January 11am to 12.30pm Tutor: David Squire (RHS team) Apple Pruning Thursday 19 January or Thursday 26 January 11am to 12.30pm Tutor: Peter Earl (RHS Team) Come and unravel the mysteries of apple pruning at this practical demonstration. We will be looking at the formative pruning of young apple trees as well as pruning established trees. We will also discuss summer pruning, and see how it is used to maintain our trained apples, (i.e. cordons, espaliers and fans), and compare it to the winter pruning of our traditional orchard, which is what we will be concentrating on during this demonstration. This event will take place outside so please come prepared with boots and warm clothing. Let the RHS experts help you through the gardening year providing a whistle-stop tour of techniques, tips, tricks and advice on seasonal tasks so that you know what you could be doing when. 6 Horticulture Beginner s Gardening (Part 1): Basic Skills Saturday 4 February 10.30am to 4.30pm Tutor: Ian Smith (Bicton College Tutor) Ian will explain the basics of gardening and give you the opportunity to ask questions. You will take a look around the garden learning what needs to be done at this time of year, and discovering how you can apply this to your garden at home. Ian will cover plant identification, pruning and seed sowing. This is the first in a series of regular day courses following the seasonal changes at Rosemoor. Pick and choose which interest you most, or attend them all. Venue: Peter Buckley Learning Centre and Garden Event code: Winter Colour for your Garden Thursday 16 February 11am to 12.30pm Tutor: James Shepherd (RHS Team) Winter is often considered to be a closed season in the garden, but this definitely need not be the case. Colourful and fragrant flowers, striking barks and stems and a wide variety of evergreen plants all help to brighten up the garden and provide a wealth of interest throughout the winter. On this walk we will look at a good selection of plants, all of which are star performers during the winter months, and also discuss how to care for them. A comprehensive plant list will be provided for participants. Event code: Maximum 16 places Horticulture Hedge Laying Saturday 28 January 10.30am to 1pm Tutor: Tom Hynes (North Devon Biosphere) Tom is the Biodiversity Officer for the North Devon Biosphere with a particular interest in Devon Hedges and their management, as they are potentially the most important habitat for wildlife in the Biosphere Reserve. He also judges the Devon Hedge Laying Competition. In this demonstration, Tom will show you how to lay a hedge, explain why Devon hedges are different from other hedge types, and discuss how to improve the wildlife of a Devon hedge by creating new Devon hedges. He will bring a selection of tools for you to see but the emphasis of the event is to look and learn from the demonstration. Tom will be happy to give advice on your own hedges, so please bring photographs if you wish. Fee: : RHS Members 20 Non-RHS Members 31 Event code: Snowdrop Day Saturday 11 February 11am to 3.30pm Tutor: Trevor Wiltshire and RHS Staff Enjoy a day in the company of these enchanting flowers, with a talk in the morning and a guided garden walk after a lunch break. Trevor was the superintendent of the rock garden at RHS Wisley and has served on local and national committees of the Alpine Garden Society and the Cyclamen Society. He will talk about wild Turkish snowdrops, how that country conserves wild populations of snowdrops and cyclamen, and explain CITES and its limitations. The propagation technique of twin scaling will be explained, with slides of the village of Dumlugöze s snowdrop growing fields and he will describe the frustrations of this laudable project to conserve wild populations and curb the digging-up of wild snowdrops for export. Saturday 25 February 10.30am to 4.30pm Tutor: Ian Smith (Bicton College tutor) This day will guide you through the exciting time of creating a new garden how to identify the features to keep and enhance the area, how to manage overgrown and untidy areas. It will also include a basic maintenance plan for jobs to do in the garden, how to create a new border and a vegetable garden plan. 7 Horticulture Shrub Pruning Wednesday 1 March 11am to 12.30pm Tutor: Jon Webster (RHS Rosemoor Curator) Pruning is for many a complicated subject, not knowing when or why you are meant to be carrying out the task. This demonstration will look at a wide variety of plants, outlining the different reasons for pruning, how we can trick nature to get better displays within our garden and look at annual and rejuvenation pruning techniques, and the best tools for the job. At the end, you will feel more confident to go home and tame your jungle and get the best display possible from your plants. Event code: Maximum 16 places What Now? Jim will explain the theory behind the skill and demonstrate each stage before you try the technique yourself. Each attendee will be able to graft two apple varieties onto dwarfing rootstocks and take them away to grow at home. This demonstration will cover seed sowing, softwood cuttings and basic nursery skills to include potting, pricking out, watering and feeding - all the essentials you need to produce healthy plants for your own garden. 8 Horticulture The Curator s Spring Garden Walk Wednesday 19 April 11am to 12.30pm Tutor: Jon Webster (RHS Rosemoor Curator) Rosemoor is a garden with many themed garden rooms and a diverse plant collection and best described as a garden for all seasons, there is always something of interest to see and to inspire. Come and enjoy this gentle stroll around the garden looking at the seasonal beauty. Event code: Maximum 20 places Introduction to Growing in Polytunnels Saturday 22 April 11am to 12.30pm Tutor: Peter Adams (RHS Team) Do you have a polytunnel or are you thinking about buying one? In recent years, they have become smaller and more affordable for the amateur gardener and really lengthen the growing season. Peter has been growing common and more unusual vegetables in a polytunnel for several years and will inspire you to start or improve on your growing techniques at home. There will also be a follow-on talk on Saturday 8 July. Event code: Maximum 16 places Planting up a Hanging Basket Wednesday 3 May 11am to 1pm Tutor: Helen Round and Susie Hauxwell (RHS Team) Come and join Helen and Susie and plant up a hanging basket to take home with you. They will demonstrate and talk you through the practical task, explaining what composts and plants to use and how to look after it over the coming weeks and months. Don t be afraid of that sunless spot bring it to life with some cool customers dull they are not, interesting and pretty and sometimes quite unusual they are. 9 Horticulture How to make Beautiful Lawns and Meadows Tuesday 27 June 11am to 12.30pm Tutor: Mat Fry (RHS Team) Want to know more about making your lawn or meadow look fabulous? Join Mat and Alex on a walk and talk on the maintenance of grass areas, from ½ high fine turf to 2ft high meadows. They will cover meadow establishment, management and wildflower identification, as well as fine turf maintenance including scarification, spiking, and top dressing. There will be plenty of practical guidance for getting the best out of all types of grass areas. Would you like tips on how to choose plants that will look good together in your borders? This garden walk will point you in the right direction by using examples of planting combinations in the borders at Rosemoor. Please bring a notepad, pen and camera if you wish. Event code: Maximum 20 places Choosing Roses for your Garden Thursday 13 July 11am to 12.30pm Tutor: Philip Scott (RHS Team) Our rose gardens are some of the most spectacular in the UK, yet when the RHS started to develop the wider garden we were warned not to grow roses! Learn how we do it and how you too can have beautiful, healthy roses in your garden. Look at the different flower types, compare scents and discuss the different growth habits before trying to choose the most suitable ones for your garden. Event code: Horticulture Mediterranean Gardening Wednesday 21 June 11am to 12.30pm Tutor: Susie Hauxwell (RHS Team) Come and have a look at the Mediterranean Garden. The talk will cover a brief history of the area and the recent developments to improve it. We will look at the range, style and siting of plants and planting. This is for anyone interested in dry/gravel gardens who would like a more in depth view of the way we look after this part of the garden. Event code: Maximum 20 places Mid-summer Perennials to lift your Borders Friday 28 July 11am to 12.30pm Tutor: Richard Wilson (RHS Team) After the freshness and glorious colour palette of early summer, our own gardens can sometimes start to flag a little by mid-summer. This doesn t have to happen though, and Richard will show you a wide range of perennials to make sure the summer colours just keep on coming. Fee: RHS Members 14, Non-RHS Members 25 Event code: Scything for Beginners Thursday 3 August or Friday 11 August 10.30am to 4.30pm Tutor: Andi Rickard (UK Ladies Scything Champion) Andi has held her scything title for five years running and enjoys teaching others the graceful art of scything. The skill has been making a comeback in recent years, partly helped by a scene in the television version of Poldark, and is a more environmentally friendly way to cut grass and wildflower meadows. You will learn the history of scything, how to sharpen and use the scythe and try different designs, all in one of our wildflower meadows. Scythes and other tools will also be available to buy from Andi. Then the technique for the robin will be started, as time allows. Day 2: The robin will be completed today and the theory of perspective will be introduced before beginning the leaves. Day 3: Today, the leaves will be completed, showing the depth of field/perspective technique and the final tweaking of the drawn images will be considered.
