2 RHS Garden Harlow Carr Courses and workshops Welcome to our 2018 programme of courses and workshops, sharing the very best in horticulture to fill you with inspiration. RHS Garden Harlow Carr offers a wide range of workshops from pruning and propagation to art and photography, to inspire you and enhance your knowledge of plants and gardens. Most courses include a practical element and are offered at a range of different levels of experience. RHS Garden Harlow Carr offers the opportunity to learn alongside RHS horticulturists and experts in the fantastically resourced Bramall Learning Centre. This amazing building, one of the greenest in the country, has three classrooms and a library. Close by are the educational resources of the teaching garden, glasshouse and the lodge. Our 2018 programme aims to provide horticultural sessions to suit everyone. Whether you are a complete beginner, career changer or just wanting to learn something new in a friendly and relaxed setting, we hope we have something for everyone. This year we have added to our popular series of guided walks and have included practical activities for you to try where appropriate with our talented team of horticulturists who will share with you seasonal highlights and give you tips and advice for your own garden. We have extended our range of garden craft and creative workshops, offering you the opportunity to learn how to cultivate and weave your own willow, use pottery to make a Green Man tile or decorative planter and use green wood to make furniture, spoons and kitchenalia. Our botanical drawing and lino printing offer the seasons of the gardens as inspiration and the natural world is the inspiration for retro prints and lampshade making. We hope you find a course to fire your enthusiasm and look forward to welcoming you to the garden in The Royal Horticultural Society is the UK s foremost gardening charity, helping and inspiring millions of people to garden. We do this at our gardens and shows and through our scientific research, publications, libraries and our education and community programmes. 8 Horticulture Horticulture Growing orchids as houseplants Friday 19 January 10am to 12.30pm Tutor: Nige Eaton (RHS team) Has your orchid stopped flowering or is looking past its best and you don t know what to do? Join our orchid doctors Nige and Baccus to learn the secrets of success to growing orchids as house plants. This hands-on morning workshop will provide you with the opportunity to bring in your own orchid and learn how to get the best from your plant by supplying the right growing conditions, how to treat pests and diseases before having a go at repotting your orchid, root trimming and much more. You will then be ready to return home to care for your plant and enjoy its beauty for years to come. January and February Friday 26 January 10am to 4pm Tutor: Olive Green This is the first of our ever popular seasonal, full day courses. Are you new to gardening and unsure what exactly you should be doing and how to do it or a keen gardener wanting tips on your timings? Join Olive in this series of workshops that will take you through the gardening year providing a whistle-stop tour of techniques, tips, tricks and advice on seasonal tasks so that you know what you could be doing when. January and February will cover many tasks including ground preparation, seed selection and early sowing under cover to prepare you for the start of the growing Garden walk: The Harlow Carr Winter Walk Wednesday 28 February 10am to 12.30pm Tutor: RHS team Share our passion, enthusiasm and knowledge for winter planting schemes in this guided walk of the old winter garden and RHS Harlow Carr s more contemporary Winter Walk. The session will focus on plants used specifically to create an interesting winter garden, regardless of size. Discover vivid colour, intoxicating scents, interesting forms and textures, months of continuous flowers and even temperature-related colour changing effects. You will find out about the myths of removing the foliage on hellebores and how to extend the season into spring by the careful selection of early flowering spring bulbs. 10 Horticulture Designing a kitchen garden Friday 9 March 10am to 4pm Tutor: Amy Lax Join Amy to learn how to design a beautiful as well as productive kitchen garden combining fruit, vegetables and herbs. The day will combine illustrated talks with practical activities focusing on: Growing fruit, vegetables and herbs together, their different needs and deciding what to include in your kitchen garden, survey and analysis of a potential site, the practical requirements of a kitchen garden, different layouts and design styles. You will take a walk to the Harlow Carr kitchen garden to discuss planting and establishing the garden and enjoy a practical session to develop outline ideas into preliminary plans. How to grow cut flowers Tuesday 13 March 10am to 4pm Tutor: Rachel Petheram Learn the skills for growing beautiful cut flowers to enhance both the outside and inside of your home. This course will cover all the essentials you need to grow flowers for cutting and will focus on the flowers that are best sown and propagated in spring. You will learn how to select your site and plan what to grow where and when. Find out which varieties are best, and learn tips on planting, growing, cutting and preserving the life of cut flowers. Rachel will give an illustrated talk covering all these areas and she will run a seed sowing workshop to get you started. Join us as we identify the plants that will be ready for a spring prune to ensure you get a head start in the garden. Focusing on some key seasonal plants including Buddleja, Hydrangea, Willow and Hamamelis, you will be taken on a tour around the garden and shown the pruning techniques used by the horticultural team to ensure healthy plants and stunning displays year on year. March and April Friday 16 March 10am to 4pm Tutor: Olive Green In the second course of this series let Olive help you through the gardening year, providing a whistle-stop tour of techniques, tips, tricks and advice on seasonal tasks so that you know what you could be doing in spring. March and April will cover many tasks including cutting back and dividing perennials, feeding and mulching, staking, seed sowing under cover and outdoors, taking cuttings, lawn care, planting shallots and potatoes and shrub pruning. The workshops will involve some lecture-based sessions and some indoor and outdoor practical sessions, so please come prepared with appropriate clothing, footwear and gardening gloves. 12 Horticulture Garden walk: Dogwood pruning Wednesday 28 March 10am to 12.30pm Tutor: RHS Team Join this walk to find out how to spring prune different Cornus (dogwood) varieties to get the most out of them. There will be demonstrations on a range of pruning techniques from very hard stooling, to pruning on a three-year cycle, and a renovation prune. You will be shown different ways to use your prunings, including a demonstration of making decorative plant supports for climbers and propagating from cuttings. Learn also about the plant combinations which help to complement Cornus and maintain interest in a border even after pruning. An introduction to bonsai Wednesday 11 April 10am to 4pm Tutor: Harlow Carr Bonsai Group A one day introductory course into the art of bonsai. The Bonsai Group tutors are hoping to dispel a few myths about this fascinating subject, whilst teaching you how to care for your own plant. All students will be able to take home their own tree in a pot. 13 How to grow herbs Tuesday 17 April 10am to 4pm Tutor: Rachel Petheram Following on from the cutting garden course, Rachel will show you the multi-functional nature of herbs in the garden. You will look at herbs that are good for cutting, for the kitchen and for attracting wildlife. You will also have the opportunity to sow some herbs to take away. With an illustrated talk and practical sowing and tips you should have the knowledge and materials to start your own herb garden. Maximum 20 places Garden walk: Air layering Wednesday 18 April 10am to 12.30pm Tutor: RHS Team Layering can be a very cheap, quick and rewarding method of producing a wide range of plants. This course will cover the basics of layering plants through to the more specialised method of air layering. Plants naturally layer themselves into the ground; we can observe this throughout the garden especially in the woodland here at Harlow Carr where we find many of the rhododendrons have naturally set their roots from the tips of branches that have conveniently grown into the leaf litter below. A beginner s guide to gardening Monday 23 April 10am to 4pm Tutor: Amy Lax If you are a first time owner of a garden but aren t sure how to look after it this is the course for you! Find out how to plant and look after the flowers, shrubs and trees in your garden throughout the year. Amy will demystify pruning, explain the basics of lawn care, weed control, feeding and growing successfully in containers. Amy will also provide a secateur masterclass so please bring gardening gloves if you have them. Students will be taken on a tour of the garden so please come dressed appropriately for a walk outside. 14 Horticulture Garden walk: Talking turf Wednesday 16 May 10am to 12.30pm Tutor: RHS team Join our turf and estate specialists on a tour of some of the lawns here in the garden. They will talk you through our yearly maintenance plan, show you our mowers and take the mystery out of lawn care, giving you advice on mowing, weeding and feeding, aeration and tining and ways to keep your lawns looking healthy. May and June Friday 18 May 10am to 4pm Tutor: Olive Green Returning for the summer, Olive will provide you with a range of techniques, tips, tricks and advice on seasonal jobs so that you know what you could be doing in summer. May and June s tasks will include weed control, feeding, summer shrub pruning, planting up pots and containers, deadheading, controlling pests and diseases, planting out half-hardy vegetables and annuals with opportunities for you to have a go yourself. The morning will begin with an introduction to container planting, looking at the materials required and the styles you can achieve. A walk in the garden will look at how the team achieve our spectacular displays plus insider information on how to keep them looking fabulous. Then back indoors for a demonstration on how to plant up a mixed floral container and finally the chance to have a go planting up a pot for you to take home. 15 Micro greens, sprouting seeds and unusual leaves Friday 25 May 10am to 4pm Tutor: Amy Lax Do you want to be part of the latest culinary movement? Join Amy to discover the secrets of growing microgreens, the small seedlings with big flavour. You will be introduced to a wide range of herb and vegetable microgreens and also learn how to successfully sprout seeds. Go beyond lettuce to find salad leaves with a difference such as salsola, oriental greens, nasturtium and baby chards. An ideal course for those with limited growing space, there will also be a practical session so students can take home their sowings. Horticulture Garden walk: Wildlife gardening Wednesday 13 June 10am to 12.30pm Tutor: RHS team Gardens are important mini nature reserves. If designed and managed sympathetically with wildlife in mind they can form the vital green links and provide wildlife corridors that urbanization often disrupts and destroys. This course will cover some of the ways in which the gardener can design and build a garden to suit both the keen horticulturist and the local wildlife. 16 Horticulture Garden walk: Weed or wildflower? Wednesday 27 June 10am to 12.30pm Tutor: RHS team Come for a walk with one of the garden staff around the wilder side of Harlow Carr where we will be identifying wildflowers and weeds. This walk will take you behind the scenes into our lesser cultivated areas where we can discuss the merits, uses and habitats for wildlife of the plant species that frequent Harlow Carr. At the end of the walk you should be able to identify some of our best known hedgerow and meadow plants that can be seen every day. Please wear suitable outdoor clothing and stout shoes for walking round the garden. 16 How to grow roses and sweet peas Tuesday 26 June 10am to 3pm Tutor: Rachel Petheram An in-depth course focusing on growing roses and sweet peas to use for cutting. Join Rachel as she discusses how to grow both types of flowers and the skills you will need to grow flowers to enhance the inside of your home. You will learn how to select the best site and what to grow, where and when. Learn which varieties are best and how to preserve your blooms for maximum impact. You will learn about the different types of bamboo available, designing with bamboo, planting and growing bamboo and methods of control.the course will incorporate a presentation, some practical demonstrations and a walk to see the different varieties in situ. 17 Growing scented flowers Tuesday 3 July 10am to 4pm Tutor: Rachel Petheram This ever popular course from Rachel will focus on growing scented flowers and foliage for you to enjoy. Flowers and foliage have long been associated with health, wellbeing and pleasure. With her help she will discuss the therapeutic properties of the plants and explain which are the best flowers and foliage for a scented arrangement. Rachel will also demonstrate how to put together a highly scented bouquet and then give you the opportunity to sow biennial flower seeds that you can take home for scented flowers of your own to enjoy. Working closely with registered Member of the Society of Garden Designers Cheri LaMay (BA Hons Landscape Architecture, HND Horticulture), you will learn practical skills through active participation, discussion and demonstration. Workshops will help you to engage with your creativity (even if in the past you have felt that you were not creative) so that you will see your garden through fresh eyes. Cheri s teaching style is enthusiastic and she welcomes contributions from the group, with the understanding that specific material will be covered during each session. This is a unique opportunity to learn, with the support of a freelance garden designer who has a wealth of experience and who is also a qualified teacher of adult education (Post Graduate Certificate in Education), using Harlow Carr Gardens as a fantastic learning resource. To learn more about Cheri and see her portfolio of gardens visit 22 Day 1: The site responsive garden and garden styles A successful garden design will start with an open mind, will take into account key characteristics of the landscape, and will be empathetic to the more elusive spirit of place. In other words, it will be site responsive. All information is encompassed in the site analysis. We will discuss aspects to be considered, and look carefully at examples of different gardens and styles and notice how they are responsive to their surroundings. We will begin to understand the basic principles of garden design. You may do a site analysis for your own garden as homework.

23 Day 2: Surveying the garden We will learn to accurately measure a garden and draw it to scale (surveying). The basic methods will be demonstrated before you have the opportunity to work with a group to survey a small site. You may then survey your own garden as homework. We will draw up a wish list of what we need and want to have in our gardens to prepare us for the next few sessions, then we will begin to pull our information together. If you have a large or complex garden it is highly recommended that you have a survey drawn up by a professional topographical surveyor prior to the course. Day 3: Designing with purpose We will look at the gardens at Harlow Carr to learn how different styles can be achieved with conscious use of form, hard materials, water, seating and other features. We will see how a mood board, site analysis and zoning plan can be brought together to design a garden layout with a unique aesthetic and you may make a mood board and zoning plan for your garden as homework. Day 4: Developing your design Today we will ease into our creativity with some fun exercises using coloured card and thick markers. This is a time to let go of detail, forget logical thinking and to make a mess! It is anticipated that by the end of the day you will have a number of possible layouts for your garden, out of which you may select one to develop further. Day 5: Planting styles, plant associations and planting plans We will start the day by exploring colour theory; will study examples of classic and modern planting styles and venture into the gardens at Harlow Carr to discover how colour, texture, form and plant associations have been used. You will relate these principles to the unique conditions of your own garden. Finally, we will look at example planting plans to see how they can be drawn up to include all of the necessary information. Day 6: Completing a stage of design We will consider what information is needed by a landscape contractor for your garden design to be constructed as you have envisioned. Professional garden designers use both documents and images to convey what is required and these, along with a written agreement, form the contract of work. We will look at examples of these. Day one introduces all the basic skills of relief printmaking from drawing through to print. Helen helps show you how to capture the essence of a plant and explore ways of translating their distinctive features into effective linocut. Jo will show you how to paint with wool by creating stunning landscape pictures by wet felting with wool. Needle-felted wired hares Two day course: Friday 8 to Saturday 9 June 10am to 4pm Tutor: Helen Riddle Develop your needle felting skills to produce a beautiful seated or reclining hare. We will start with a few basic needle felting techniques such as shaping, joining in two and three dimensions and producing flat pieces. Moving on to make a simple wire armature, we will build up and sculpt the wool with our needle felting needles to create a poseable figure (approx. 20cm tall). Helen s newest workshop has been inspired by textile designer (and keen gardener) Lucienne Day. Collage proved a popular design device in the 1950s. Along with other designers she used a combination of abstract blocks of colour superimposed with skeletal leaf shapes and linear plant forms to create her stunning designs. The garden offers everything needed to inspire participants to create their own unique designs retro style. In addition to learning all the basic skills of relief printmaking using vinyl-lino, you can enjoy exploring the technique of nature printing. Seed heads and leaves provide a starting point for design instruction and activities will help you to enjoy a weekend of experimenting with colour, line, shape and pattern. 40 Photography Photography Steve Gosling is a professional photographer who specialises in producing creative and contemporary landscape and travel images. His photographs have been published internationally illustrating posters, cards, books, magazines, newspapers and calendars. His fine art prints have been widely exhibited and have also appeared on sets, both for theatre and stage productions. His work has also won many awards for example, his landscape images have been successful in the UK s Black & White Photographer of the Year competition and for the last 3 years he has had images shortlisted in the prestigious international B&W Spider Awards, achieving an Honourable Mention in As well as working closely with Phase One (for whom he is a Fieldwork Professor) and Lee Filters Steve is an Ambassador for Olympus, Manfrotto/Gitzo tripods & Permajet inkjet papers. This year we are delighted to offer a series of workshops designed and run by Steve for beginners to experienced photographers. 40 Mastering plant and flower photography 4 modules Four Thursdays: 22 February, 3 May, 2 August, 15 November 10am to 5pm Tutor: Steve Gosling This brand new course is a modular workshop with 4 parts to be delivered one each in winter, spring, summer & autumn. Participants will be required to sign up for all four modules at the outset. Participants will be set an assignment to be completed between Modules 1 & 2, 2 & 3 and 3 & 4 and these will be reviewed and assessed interactively by the course leader in conjunction with participants in the classroom setting. Module 1 will cover the core essentials of flower and plant photography e.g. exposure, understanding focus & depth of field, working with and understanding natural light. Module 2 will concentrate on macro and close up photography. Module 3 will deal with composition.

41 Module 4 will look at creative/artistic approaches to photography. All modules will have some time allocated to photograph in the garden under the supervision of the course leader.
