2 RHS Garden Rosemoor Courses and workshops Welcome to our 2018 programme of courses and workshops, sharing the very best in horticulture to fill you with inspiration. At Rosemoor, you will find a wide range of courses and workshops to increase your experience and knowledge of plants and gardens, from pruning and propagation, to art, craft and photography. Whether you enjoy creative days out, talks or short courses for building your skills, we hope you find something to suit you in the following pages. The courses offer the opportunity to learn alongside RHS horticulturists and experts in their field in the very beautiful and unique setting of RHS Garden Rosemoor. Many of our practical skills demonstrations and workshops have been very popular again, so we continue to offer rose, apple and shrub pruning, grafting, hedge laying and growing in polytunnels. We are often asked for a demonstration on Wisteria and Clematis pruning and in January, it will be covered within a new event on Pruning of Wall Shrubs and Climbers. There will be fascinating talks on Magnolias, Alpines, Veitch s Plant Introductions and the Secret Life of Bulbs and Corms. Our Beginner s Garden Design workshop has been popular for several years now and this year extends to two days allowing more time for surveying and some rough sketching. An evening walk and talk on Bats at Rosemoor, and a daytime walk behind the scenes to learn about Rosemoor s Lime Kiln and the Rolle Canal offer a chance to learn more about the site. In our Garden Craft section, we have new willow sculpture workshops, willow conical plant supports and low hurdles always attractive features in a garden, and if you ve ever wanted to learn how to make and build with cob, why not try our cob pizza oven workshop in May. Our creative courses continue to expand with new workshops for sculptural needle-felting, paper flowers, machine and hand embroidery, and if you, or someone you know has ever wanted to learn stone carving, then book up for our weekend workshop in September it would make an unusual gift too. Art workshops are ever popular and we are delighted to welcome back our expert and very talented West Country tutors Jennifer Johnson, Ros Franklin and Janet Judge, in addition to Angeline de Meester, from London, who exhibits in the UK and abroad. Rosemoor is a perfect venue for photography too, so Graham Karslake and Ross Hoddinott will be returning to help beginners and improvers develop their skills. Please do book early to avoid disappointment and don t forget our courses and workshops also make perfect and unusual presents for friends and family. 8 Horticulture Horticulture Rose Pruning Wednesday 10 January or Thursday 8 February 11am to 12.30pm Tutor: Philip Scott (RHS Team) This comprehensive demonstration will cover the pruning and training of all roses, from climbers through to ramblers, shrubs and modern varieties. We will also look at nutrition and disease control, and offer some handy tips on establishing roses. This demonstration will take place outside so please come prepared with boots and warm clothing. Your Garden in Winter Wednesday 17 January 11am to 12.30pm Tutor: David Squire (RHS Team) Are you new to gardening and unsure exactly what you should be doing when, or are you a keen gardener wanting tips on your timings? Let the RHS experts help you through the gardening year providing a whistle-stop tour of techniques, tips, tricks and advice on seasonal tasks so that you know what you could be doing when. Sessions will vary in format including talks, practical demonstrations and walks around the garden at Rosemoor. Winter topics covered mulching, preparing for the year ahead, renovation pruning of shrubs, rose pruning, plus other topics of seasonal interest. 9 Apple Pruning Thursday 18 January or Tuesday 23 January 11am to 12.30pm Tutor: Peter Earl Come and unravel the mysteries of apple pruning at this practical demonstration. We will be looking at the formative pruning of young apple trees as well as pruning established trees. We will also discuss summer pruning, and see how it is used to maintain our trained apples, (i.e. cordons, espaliers and fans), and compare it to the winter pruning of our traditional orchard, which is what we will be concentrating on during this demonstration. This event will take place outside so please come prepared with boots and warm clothing. Fee: RHS Members 20, Non-RHS Members 31 Event code: (18 January) or (23 January) Maximum 16 places The Story of Rosemoor Thursday 25 January 11am to 12.30pm Tutor: Jon Webster and David Squire (RHS Team) RHS Garden Rosemoor opened to the public on 1 June 1990, given to us by the then Lady Anne Palmer, now Lady Anne Berry. Since then it has gone through tremendous changes and our visitor numbers have grown. The original garden has been developed and improved and the newer garden transformed from sheep fields, resulting in the creation of one of the most beautiful gardens in the world. Discover how this has happened and hear some of the intriguing stories along the way from David, who started here just after the RHS took over, and learn about our plans for the future from Jon, our curator. 10 Horticulture Hedge Laying Saturday 27 January 10.30am to 1pm Tutor: Tom Hynes (Devon Hedge Group) Tom is a member of the Devon Hedge Group and a judge for the Devon Hedge Laying Competition. In this demonstration, Tom will show you how to lay a hedge, explain why Devon hedges are different from other hedge types, and discuss how to improve the wildlife of a Devon hedge by creating a new Devon hedge. He will bring a selection of tools for you to see but the emphasis of the event is to look and learn from the demonstration. Tom will be happy to give advice on your own hedges, so please bring photographs if you wish. Fee: RHS Members 22, Non-RHS Members 33 Event code: Pruning and Training of Climbers and Wall Shrubs (to include Wisteria and Clematis) Wednesday 31 January 11am to 12.30pm Tutor: Jonathan Hutchinson (RHS Team) These plants are an essential part of our garden but do need some regular, or occasional maintenance to get them to grow and flower at their best. You will see a wide range on this walk which may give you some ideas for enhancing your own garden. Wisteria and Clematis are great garden favourites but are often pruned incorrectly, so find out how the experts do it to ensure your arches and pergolas are filled with blossom. Roses will not be covered. Event code: Beginner s Gardening: Basic Skills Saturday 3 February 10.30am to 4.30pm Tutor: Ian Smith (Bicton College tutor) The fundamentals of gardening with the opportunity to ask as many questions as you need. A seasonal look around the garden learning what needs to be done at this time of year and how you can apply this to your own garden at home. Covering plant identification, pruning and seed sowing. The first in a series of day courses following the seasonal changes at Rosemoor and how to make the most of your own garden throughout the year. 11 Brilliant Winter Colours for your Garden Tuesday 6 February 11am to 12.30pm Tutor: James Shepherd (RHS Team) Winter is often considered to be a closed season in the garden, but this definitely need not be the case. Colourful and fragrant flowers, striking barks and stems and a wide variety of evergreen plants all help to brighten up the garden and provide a wealth of interest throughout the winter. On this walk we will look at a good selection of plants, all of which are star performers during the winter months, and also discuss how to care for them. A comprehensive plant list will be provided for participants. Event code: Maximum 15 places Shrub Pruning Friday 2 March 11am to 12.30pm Tutor: Jonathan Hutchinson (RHS Team) Pruning is for many a complicated subject, not knowing when or why you are meant to be carrying out the task. This demonstration will look at a wide variety of plants, outlining the different reasons for pruning, how we can trick nature to get better displays within our garden and look at annual and rejuvenation pruning techniques, and the best tools for the job. At the end, you will feel more confident to go home and tame your jungle and get the best display possible from your plants. Event code: Maximum 16 places Horticulture Basic Vegetable Growing for Complete Beginners Monday 26 February 11am to 12.30pm Tutor: Edibles Team This session will introduce beginners to vegetable growing and the exciting world of grow your own, looking at basic planning and needs for a successful vegetable garden. Peter s introduction will cover how to propagate your own vegetable plants, how to grow an easy range of crops, and give you plenty of top tips for success along the way. 13 Grafting for Beginners Tuesday 13 March 10.30am to 12.30pm or 2pm to 4pm Tutor: Jim Arbury (RHS Wisley Fruit and Trials Specialist) Learn the art of grafting from RHS Wisley s Fruit Garden expert. Jim will explain the theory behind the skill and demonstrate each stage before you try the technique yourself. Each attendee will be able to graft two apple varieties onto dwarfing rootstocks and take them away to grow at home. This method can be used to produce fruit trees and many ornamentals. The after-care needed to grow the tree on will also be explained. Fee per single session: RHS Members 25, Non-RHS Members 36 Venue: Lecture Hall Event code: (AM) or (PM) Maximum 10 places per session Success with Seeds and Cuttings Wednesday 28 March 11am to 12.30pm Tutor: RHS Nursery Team Find out how we grow a range of plants from seed and cuttings on our nursery at Rosemoor. This demonstration will cover seed sowing, softwood cuttings and basic nursery skills to include potting, pricking out, watering and feeding all the essentials you need to produce healthy plants for your own garden. and Lecture Hall Event code: Maximum 15 places Alpines: A miscellany of tips, tricks and technology Tuesday 17 April 11am to 12.30pm Tutor: Paul Cumbleton (former Team leader of RHS Wisley s alpine section) This very practical talk will feature a series of practical demonstrations, covering composts & drainage, novel growing media, water quality, light and shade and much more. Ideal for all levels of alpine enthusiast. You are sure to leave with plenty of new ideas and inspiration for your own collection. Paul worked for the RHS for 11 years, responsible for the rock garden, alpine meadow, crevice garden and the alpine display houses, and prior to that, for ADAS for over 20 years. He has a particular passion for growing alpines, pleiones and the wintergrowing South African bulbs. 14 Horticulture Introduction to Growing in Polytunnels Saturday 21 April 11am to 12.30pm Tutor: Peter Adams (RHS Team) In this introduction, Peter will look at the features of a polytunnel structure as well as its construction and siting, to help you make the best decisions when choosing one. He will show you where and how to begin growing in the tunnel, give suggestions for which crops to grow and explain how to manage the growing space throughout the season. There is also a Fully Productive Polytunnel talk on Saturday 7 July. 15 Plants for Stumperies and Shady Places Monday 4 June 11am to 12.30pm Tutor: Penny King (RHS Team) Explore our new stumpery, find out how it was created and the wonderful planting it now contains. Be inspired to create your own and find out which plants look best in this situation. Shady plants certainly come into their own here and there are so many beautiful and unusual ones you can choose. Event code: Maximum 15 places A Fully Productive Polytunnel Saturday 7 July 11am to 12.30pm Tutor: Peter Adams (RHS Team) In this follow-up talk, Peter will look more closely at crop selection and particular varieties that do well in the polytunnel environment. He will also cover management techniques for the growing space through the summer, and how to plan what to grow into the autumn and winter months. There is also an introductory talk on Saturday 21 April. Event code: Horticulture Trees of the World: The Bicentenary Arboretum Monday 18 June 11am to 12.30pm Tutor: Jonathan Hutchinson and Rod Knight (RHS Team) Enjoy a walk around this fascinating arboretum, find out more about the extensive tree planting and see how it is maturing. The trees are laid out in areas of the world which allows you to see some more natural combinations. 16 Horticulture Ideas for Beautiful Containers Wednesday 18 July 11am to 12.30pm Tutor: Susie Hauxwell (RHS Team) Whether you have a large, or small garden, beautifully planted containers are essential to enhance your front door and garden, and with careful planting you can have a selection to give you colour, scent and interest all year round. Susie will help you with plant choice, the right composts to use and how to make sure the plants are maintained in tip-top condition. 17 Bats at Rosemoor Friday 27 July 9pm to 11pm Tutor: Sarah Butcher (Devon Bat Group) Sarah has been interested in bats for over seven years, since going on a bat walk, trying out a bat detector for the first time and buying her own three days later. She now monitors bat populations all over the county, leads walks, talks and surveys, and rehabilitates injured bats. The evening will start with a talk about bats, the bat year, local species and their ecology, attendees can also learn how to use a bat detector. A garden walk will initially lead to Lady Anne s house for sunset, where there is a roost and you can watch the bats emerge, before heading into the formal gardens to see which bats can be found. Sarah will also talk about the kind of planting which is good for bats. The soil was heavy clay and infertile, however, it was known that the addition of limestone either crushed or burnt, was a great soil improver. Crushing was not possible but burning was, so a network of lime kilns were built and linked by the Rolle Canal. 30 Creative The Summer Garden in Loose and Colourful Watercolour (3 day course) Friday 3 to Sunday 5 August 10.30am to 4.30pm Tutor: Janet Judge Janet has been a professional painter for over 20 years, exhibiting widely, and is known for her sumptuous colours and relaxed, contemporary painting style. Watercolour can have a mind of its own but Janet teaches her students to work with the medium, enjoying the flow of the colour rather than completely controlling it. You will start with tonal drawings using charcoal and watercolour with big brushes to loosen up and get a feel for the plants and the garden. Students will be able to work out in the garden (weather permitting) or in the classroom. Learn how to build up layers of transparent colour, try techniques such as wet in wet and experiment with sticks and feathers as well as a variety of different brushes. Your tickets should arrive within 10 days of booking. In the unlikely event that they fail to arrive or you have a query regarding your tickets, please telephone between 9am 5pm Monday to Friday. Non-Members may become a member of the RHS at the time of booking and pay the members price. Tickets are non-refundable unless the event is cancelled by the RHS. RHS Garden Rosemoor reserves the right to cancel an event, in which case fees will be fully refunded. All events will run subject to a minimum number of students. The decision as to whether the course goes ahead is made one week in advance of the event; therefore you are strongly advised to book before this time. Circumstances may require that event tutors change from those named in this brochure. Provided a tutor of equal standing is secured, participants will not be notified in advance. Refunds will only be given in the unlikely event that a replacement tutor is unavailable. All the events are non-residential but if you would like to stay in one of our luxurious self-catering holiday apartments in Rosemoor House, please call , or rosemooradmin@rhs.org.uk for more details. Unless specified, the events are run specifically for adults. We regret that we are unable to admit children under 16 to any event. 34

35 Access: The majority of Rosemoor is easily accessible but if you have any specific needs or requirements please call Wheelchairs: RHS Garden Rosemoor has a number of manual wheelchairs which are available to borrow at the garden entrance. Mobility scooters: Three scooters are available for use which must be pre-booked by ringing A 5 returnable deposit is payable. There will be a short questionnaire and trial before hire so it is advised that you allow an extra 15 minutes on your travelling time. Facilities: The Rosemoor Plant Centre and Gift Shop, and the Rosemoor Garden Kitchen Restaurant are open daily from 10am all year round. The Wisteria Tearoom is open April to September, and the Rosemoor Reading Room is open for reference only from noon until 4pm every day. Carers: Attendants cannot be provided, but one companion is admitted free of charge per wheelchair user, visually impaired visitor or other person whose disability or situation necessitates a carer. Please state if this is the case when booking. Admission: Admission to RHS Garden Rosemoor is included in the price of the course ticket. Weather: Many of our courses include outdoor activities. Please ensure that you dress appropriately for the weather with suitable footwear. First aid: In the event of an emergency there will always be a trained first aider on site. Parking: Car parking is free. Dogs: We don t encourage visitors to bring dogs to Rosemoor, and only Guide and Registered Support Dogs are allowed inside the Garden.
