A Message from the President Laura Jacobson As hurricanes continue to wreak havoc in areas off the southeast coast of Florida, I am reminded of the preciousness of life. Please take a moment to offer prayer and compassion for those affected by these storms and if possible, monetary assistance to help people rebuild their homes and cities. So far, we have been fortunate that we have not been among those cities that are in the midst of so much destruction. I send my thoughts and prayers to those of you who have family in those areas and wish them a speedy recovery. Council News: I'd like to thank Jessica for our recent program and speakers from the Chesapeake Bay Foundation and Lynnhaven River Now project. As always, these agencies were informative and inspiring - remaining steadfast in their missions of keeping our waterways clean and healthier in the presence of a positive and active force of volunteers and representatives. I encourage you to visit their websites for information about how you can become a donor or a volunteer. You can also find Conservation information on the Council website under our new Conservation tab and in this issue of the Taproot. Join us for a wonderful program on Wednesday, October 11 th, at 10am at the Central Library featuring Mac Houfek (AKA The Constant Gardener ) as she shares her Reflections on a Coastal Garden. Several clubs have had Mac as their guest and raved about her program. Mac was recently featured in Distinction Magazine promoting her book. In November, bring a friend to our Council Fundraiser program on Wednesday, November 8 th, at 10am featuring Jeremy Schmidt from The New Leaf floral design studio in Norfolk. He will be highlighting beautiful designs, new ideas, and a few surprises for the Holidays! Please refer to our flyer and information from our Fundraising Chairman in this edition of the Taproot for more details. I also want to remind everyone that the Hospitality Chairman position is still available. Please feel free to contact me at if you think you might be interested in filling this position. Note: We will not be serving refreshments at our General meetings until we locate a Chairman for Hospitality. I look forward to meeting all of you as we embark on another great year of programs and holiday events. Laura 2

Did you know? (A History Lesson) Here are the histories of two of Council s six founding clubs. The History of the Cavalier Garden Club The Cavalier Garden Club was founded in 1949 by a North End neighborhood group, naming the Woods Lily as its flower and the Bay Berry as its shrub. The original 20 members were galvanized by their efforts to transform the Atlantic Avenue medium strip into a beautiful parkway. Their projects included trash pick-up to help Atlantic Parkway lose its name of Garbage Gulch. By 1951, they had formal objectives: to develop the knowledge of gardening in sandy soil, to aid in the protection of native trees and flora and to encourage civic planting and all related activities. Their dream was to landscape Atlantic Parkway from 42 nd Street to Fort Story, but how could one club handle such a colossal job? The answer was the newly organized Council of Garden Clubs of Virginia Beach, specifically both the Princess Anne and Virginia Beach Garden Clubs. The Parkway served as a testing area for sandy soil, wind and salt spray Japanese Black Pines, Indian Hawthorne and Shore Juniper proved to be ideal. The club was interested in flower arrangement right from the start, having many flower shows and demonstrations including one at the Dome, which incorporated copies of sculptures from the Norfolk Museum (now Chrysler Museum). A far-reaching civic effort was participation in the creation of the Virginia Beach Beautification Commission in Over the years, their strong commitment to flower arranging, horticulture, civic beautification and charitable efforts have remained the same, working with the city on many of their projects. Some examples are: Landscaping the Old Coast Guard Station, Visitor s Center areas, Sugar Plum Bakery grounds & the Beach Garden Park Point. Norwegian Lady planter boxes & shrubs, Life Saving Museum beautification, a water wagon for the City & plantings at the second building of the Virginia Aquarium. Planting at the Francis Land House, landscaping Information Center areas including dolphin statuary and funding the installation of planters and landscaping at North End beach access entrances, which has dramatically improved the aesthetics in those areas. Being a major supporter of Council Projects, like the Celebrate the Children Garden at the Courthouse. The History of the Bay Colony Garden Club During the first few meetings of the Bay Colony Garden Club (BCGC) in 1950, the motto Beauty Thru Neatness and Grace was developed as the expression of the members resolve. Dues were set at one dollar for active members, the daffodil was named the club flower and, soon after, flower arrangements flowed in for judging. 3

By the May meeting, the members, acting on their goal of beautifying their neighborhood, voted to "contact all the owners of vacant lots in the Bay Colony area notifying them that the farmers who have been planting their lots were discontinuing this service, thereby leaving the fields to grow up in weeds and mosquito breeding places, unless some care be taken of them. The land area between York Lane and Linkhorn Bay was transitioning from a community of a few homes with fields and wooded land to a residential community with neighborhood streets and homes. Desiring the preservation and conservation of the existing natural beauty and wildlife and enhancements in other areas, they realized they needed a plan. Mr. Fred Heutte, arborist for the City of Norfolk and credited with establishing the Norfolk Botanical Garden, was invited to speak; his presentation concentrated on a landscaping plan, stressing the importance of permanence and a design scheme. The garden club responded. Members planted Memorial Roses, an entrance sign was installed and a small garden was planted at the site. In 1952, sixty magnolias were planted in Bay Colony. Two years later, the club committed to planting fifty 2-3ft. dogwoods, 50-cents each, at various points. Other areas of concern in the young Bay Colony neighborhood were addressed, such as: unnamed streets, unmanaged litter, roaming dogs and unpainted mailboxes. BCGC had the City post speed limits within the neighborhood and "Children Playing" signage brought greater safety for the residents. The early actions of this club are important as they established the framework for the next sixty-seven years of achievements in the Bay Colony neighborhood as well as the City of Virginia Beach. The city's growth and expansion echoed the early years of the neighborhood. Again, the club responded, initiating its own city projects and joining with other groups, like Council, in citywide efforts toward the beautification and conservation of Virginia Beach. Contributions consisted of funds or actual physical efforts. A few of their many projects were: Planting along the Atlantic Parkway, Laskin Road, the Welcome Center, Library, SPCA, Oceanfront, Court House, Linkhorn Elementary School and the Coast Guard Station Citywide crepe myrtle planting, distribution of pine seedlings, Adopt-a-Spot, Seashore State Park Education Center and an Anti-Litter Campaign BCGC has lifted spirits in other ways through the years by sponsoring Santafest, judging and awarding neighborhood holiday decorations and providing for needy families. Presently, BCGC maintains five gardens within the neighborhood, which were designed and planted by members. Our most recent development is a garden with all native plants. The Annual Bay Colony Greens Sale held in early December is the primary source of funds for the club s many projects. In the early years, fashion shows complete with orchestra, dancing, modeling and "Best Dressed" contests provided monies. Member Mary Whit Haycox (90 years-old) remembers the Christmas Festival fundraiser evolving into selling wreaths and ornaments, handmade by club members, outside of the local Colonial and A&P Stores. Today, club members offer a variety of preordered greens and numerous specialty items, such as bulbs, at the single day sale in Galilee Episcopal Church. Some traditions remain the same, like the hat party and garden tour in May. As times change, BCGC members continue to be guided by their motto Beauty thru Neatness and Grace. 4

Who's in the News? (Club Submissions about Activities in the Community) From a September 23 rd Virginian Pilot article by Mary Reid Barrow: When Demaris Yearick, Virginia Beach Garden Club s craft master, wants to make something, she Googles it first. Check online and you ll find a million ideas and a million recipes, Yearick said. Take the beautiful cement leaves that the garden club will sell at its Fall Flower Festival & Marketplace from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. October 4 th at the Virginia Beach Convention Center. Just Google cement leaves, she said, and a bunch of things will pop up. The leaf castings, made from the leaves of caladium and elephant ears, hosta, Ligularia and more, are just some of many garden-inspired crafts that club members have made to sell at the festival. The elephant ear leaf cast is large enough to be a small bird bath. Smaller ones could be used inside or out. Yearick can visualize the leaves as containers for decorative items, such as lemons or air plants. The leaves are made from about half-builder s sand and half-portland cement. Though some casts are left unadorned, Yearick said they used acrylic paint and a generic water seal on many. They hold up beautifully, she said, and haven t faded. The artist in Yearick came out when the painting began. For example, the leaves cast from caladiums are painted true to life in green with subtle shades of white and pink. Garden club members create many of the adornments at workshops that Yearick leads at her home a couple of times each year. Members make a craft for themselves and one to sell at the fall festival, Yearick said. They bring lunch and drinks. It s much more fun with a group, she added. People have a good time getting together. This year, as they have in the past, club members also have made a number of hypertufa containers. Hypertufa is a weather-resistant rocklike mixture that is used in making large garden pots and other outdoor ornaments because it is so lightweight. The garden club s hypertufa pots this year range from a small hanging birdfeeder/birdbath to large free-form troughs, perfect for miniature gardens, even small trees. Yearick s big, old plastic salad bowls, shaped like giant clamshells, were used as molds for some containers. My salad bowls were yellowing, and I really didn t want to use them anymore, she said. But they were perfect for making large clamshell-shaped planters that along with the other hypertufa pots will be filled with succulents and other plants at the sale. Other crafts for sale include oyster wreaths, made from the cupped side of an oyster shell. Scrubbed, boiled and left in the sun until they are a shiny white, the shells have rims painted in gold. They are glued around a wreath-shaped board and adorned with ribbon. There will be whole pumpkins decorated on top with moss, and, say, succulent sprigs or air plants. The pumpkin decorations should last through Thanksgiving with just a little spritzing. You also will be able to purchase unusual Israeli amaryllis bulbs in fall colors of orange, green and white that should bloom by Turkey Day, too. Smaller than the big Christmas amaryllis, Israeli amaryllis bloom in 4 to 8 weeks. Pansies, native plants and perennials, many of them dug from members gardens, will be available at the festival. So will Dale Henderson primroses, the sweet native primrose found growing on the Lynnhaven River a couple of decades ago. 5

Gardeners also will be able to purchase a forsythe pot propagation kit. The pots are an easy way to start plant cuttings. You can order more kits and sign up your garden club or group for a free workshop in the spring on the forsythe pot method. If your arms aren t full of purchases after seeing all that the garden club members have to offer, you also will find vendors from all over selling everything from gardening supplies to home accessories, from jewelry to gifts, from edibles to collectibles, and more.
