We should really be in the mood after the fantastic Flower Show we just had! Amazing job by Carvill and Kathy. So much time, energy, running from here to there to get everything and they did it all with grace. You both are such an excellent example of talent and creativity. Blue ribbons to both!!! On April 15th we have the Summers Past Farm Outing. It s not too late to sign up. If you really want to feel Spring in the air, then you must come with us to visit their sweet pea maze. Should be a fun day. We are also planning for our June installation of officers at the San Diego Country Club. Such a beautiful venue. What a wonderful way to spend our last meeting of this fiscal year. I am looking for places to visit for next year for our club. If you have something in mind, please feel free to grab me by the shoulders and say where you d like to go! 2 APRIL PROGRAM ROSES GALORE FRANCIE MURPHY AND MARIA MATA Roses: How to Grow America s Favorite Flower Francie Murphy Francie has been growing roses for more than 20 years and became a University of California-certified Master Gardener in She follows a no-fuss policy for her mix of antique and modern roses. Before retiring from her public relations business, she managed national and global public relations programs for more than 30 years. Ms. Murphy frequently lectures on how to work with the news media. She also helps to publicize many seminars sponsored by Master Gardeners. Francie has served on several boards and remains very active as a grant writer and publicist for the Greyhound Adoption Center in El Cajon and also volunteers in countless ways at the Village Church in Rancho Santa Fe. In her spare time, Ms. Murphy enjoys tending her Del Mar garden of succulents, edibles and antique roses. Trying to perfect her golf swing is another never-ending pursuit. Maria Mata is a Master Gardener with a history of volunteering at the award winning Balboa Park rose garden for over 12 years. She was mentored by the late Dick Streeper, also known as the Rose Man. She continues to volunteer at the rose garden along with Sue Streeper and a group of 40 volunteers.

Crafts, collectables, antiques, and a garden sale all on our spacious lawn area. Enjoy your day shopping at this great outdoor event. Snacks available at the coffee bar. BVGC Garden Club s Spring Plant Sale Plant Sale Set for May 6th The Bonita Valley Garden Club will host its annual plant sale from 8:30 a.m. to approx 3:00 p.m, on Saturday, May 6th, at the Bonita Museum patio, adjacent the Bonita library. A great selection of sun and shade plants, including perennials, herbs, vegetables, wildflowers, natives, ornamental grasses, cacti and succulents will be on sale. The majority of plants sell between $2 and $7 with a few gifts and specimens also at reasonable cost. Lots of tomato plants can be expected, and look for the many drought tolerant plants as well as blooming size butterfly weed for attracting butterflies, esp. Monarchs to your garden. Garden ornaments, pots, and other garden miscellany is also welcome as donations for sale. Gardeners will be able to buy good quality, healthy plants at reasonable prices. All the plants are grown locally so they should grow well in gardens in this area, says Jackie R., who is Co-chair of this event this year. Sandy Marking has graciously volunteered to co-chair. Plants are grown and donated by the club s members, as well as a usually generous donation from Cuyamaca college. They are organized by type, including whether they thrive in sun or shade. Club members will be on hand to answer questions and help customers. A secure plant holding area will be available and loading assistants will make shopping almost effortless. Proceeds from the plant sale are used for civic beautification, scholarships, and grants for horticulture-related community projects. We hope everyone can find something to add to the beauty of their garden this year. If you have plants for donation and need to deliver them, the Museum is usually open on Friday and the docents are often garden club members who can open the gate for you. We will attempt to arrange for the side gate to be open and have a member to receive them between 3PM and 5PM on Friday or earlier, and at 7AM on Saturday. Please, your donations should be saleable plants: This sale is not to be construed as a dumping ground for plants that are so past (or never reached) their prime that no one would (or could) rescue them.

4 SCHOOL GARDENS Marianne Briggs and Diane Hahnel chair the School Garden Program for our Garden Club, thank you Marianne and Diane. They plan to revisit in May VALLEY VISTA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL GARDEN PROGRAM Bryan Wallbank, a teacher at the school, has been supervising the garden program for a number of years now. He and the students have planted vegetables, flowers, strawberries and grape vines. Recently, two new fruit trees were planted on the bank of the garden. The children are involved during recess and class time. Mr. Wallbank was happy to receive the packets we gave him which he will pass out as rewards. ANN DALY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL The principal Joseph Prosapio, met with us to explain his plan for his school garden program. He is continuing to work on getting more funds and appreciates our contribution. A school aide takes children out to work in the garden.

Thank you to everyone who made this such a successful event DESIGN AWARDS Dale Rekus won the Designers Choice Award of Excellence. Carvill won, the Petite award, the Table Artistry Award, and the Award of Design Excellence Kathy won the Table Artistry Award for her beautiful table arrangement.

7 HORTICULTURE AWARDS Jackie won the Award of Merit for her Cycad, and she was also the winner of the most Blue Ribbons. Carvill won the Presidential Award for the best cut flower for her White Narcissus and the Horticulture Excellence Award for her Westringia. Vera won the Horticulture Excellence Award for her stunning Kalanchoe, much to her surprise, well done Vera. Louise won the Presidents Award for Container Plants, her plant is an African Violet.
