1 Maroochydore Orchid Society Inc. presents, The Observer P.O. Box 382, Maroochydore Patroness - Rosanna Natoli President - Duncan McMartin (07) Secretary - Kathy Howatson (07) maroochyorchid1@optusnet.com.au Treasurer - Del Whittaker (07) Editor - Fred Lenz (07) fmlenz@westnet.com.au The next cultural meeting is Tuesday 7 th August July Cultural Meeting Talk 2018 Topic; Paphiopedilum Growing My Way by P L Henssler OAM 25 June Introduction; I live on the Sunshine Coast at a suburb of Chevallum, close to Forest Glen and Buderim suburbs. My location is on a hillside with south easterly winds constantly blowing, I do have protection for plants in closed houses. 1 st Paphiopedilum house (6x4x2.1mts) is covered in Solar Weave. This one has 80% shade cloth above the Solar Weave on the roof. The sides are 50% with Solar Weave under shade cloth, has a gap top and bottom and no open sides. Inside the orchid house I have two (2) oscillating fans for constant circulation. 2 nd Paphiopedilum house (8x5x4 mts) is covered in Solar Weave with 50% shade cloth that is on the outside. Windows are cut in the eastern and northern side for circulation. The windows are cut above and under bench with 50% shade cloth covering the openings. Both houses are constructed out of 20mm galvanized steel pipe and plants are on galvanized mesh. I grow my plants on sand which is contained in polystyrene boxes.

2 I cut the boxes approximately 10cms then I come up 5cms and poke holes in the box all around the side to let excess water drain out. When placing the sand into the box, I use 200mls of Chlorine in 10lts of water to completely cover the sand to kill any algae, bacteria and pathogens living in the sand. I mainly use recycled Broccoli boxes. Watering; I find the most important task is when to and not to water. As mentioned above, I grow my Paphiopedilum in polystyrene boxes because this is the only way I can keep constant control with watering. I find it most difficult in Winter time to control watering. During this time I allow the sand to dry out on top and then water lightly. Sometime in Winter it could be up ten (10) or more days before I give the plants water when rain is holding on / off during this period. Summer time watering is around three (3) days per week, but I still look at the sand to give me some indication if I am watering too heavy and then ease off or on. On very hot days the plants may need more water to keep the humidity up. I have an under bench misting system to keep the humidity up. In summer the mistering system could go on four (4) times a day for around the minutes. In Winter, misting is once per day when applicable (depending on weather) about the same time. Both houses have gravel floors. Light; The tessellated (Mottled Leaf) plants are growing under more shade than the green leaf plants which prefer a brighter light. The way I was taught about light for Paphiopedilums was to hold your hand above the plants at midday approximately 30cms above creating a light shadow of hand on plant I find this is the best way to grow. Fertilizer; I fertilize with ½ strength fertilizer of Campbell Blue, Flower and Grow around the weekly mark in growing months and once a fortnight in cooler months. I also use worm juice with molasses. My mix is 100mls worm juice to 50 mils of molasses in a 9 ltr watering can. Alternate fortnights I also include MAGNESIUM SULPHATE/EPSOM SALTS at 1 ½ grams to 1 litre of water. In the second fortnight I add CALCIUM NITRATE at the rate of 2 grams per litre of water. This method is carried out during the growing season. Potting Mix; I use #3 and #2 orchid bark from Orchidaceous Supplies, bark is Pinus radiata and I soak a bag in water with a handful of dolomite. My potting mix consists of ¼ No 2 and ¼ No 3 bark and ¼ charcoal and ¼ medium perlite for larger plants that go into 10cms tubes. Small plants and seeding go into the same mix above but only using #2 bark. Repotting; I repot seeding every year and larger plants bi -yearly (2 Years), this is always done in August right after our annual show. Temperature; Winter time the temperature moves from around 9 C in morning to around the 20 C in the middle of the day and some years in winter we have had temperature around 2-3 C. That temperature will not hurt the plants. Summer, our temperatures range from 22 C at night and up to 40 C and if the plant leaves are hot when I feel them I will add extra shade cloth and also keep the water up to them in the afternoons and the containers full of water. Please note: This is what works well for me under my conditions and may not be suitable for your situation. I think successful orchid growing comes from trial and error over many years. Try something different if you are failing. JULY CULTURAL MEETING RESULTS

Wood Plant of the Month of July Calanthe George by Barry Woods History of the plant I purchased this plant about 5 years ago from Cape Oasis Nursery as bulb and growth. I repot every year into larger pot with an increase in flower spikes from one to the six displayed this year. Growing Procedure I have the plant in the same position of the shade house every year, facing North under 50% shadecloth. When the new growth appears and is about 3 inches high and some new roots appear, I pull the plant out of the pot and remove all the old years potting mix and most of the old roots. I use No 2 grade bark ½ to charcoal ¼ and course perlite and chopped tree fern to make the other ¼. I then water the whole plant in very well until the water runs clear from the bottom and then I don t water for a couple of weeks to really get the new roots going and searching down for moisture. Once I m happy with the root growth, I water two or maybe three times a week and have a Magamp fitting on the tap. I use Manutec at ½ strength weekly for growth and ease off that in late February. When flower spikes appear, I switch over to Manutec bloom at ½ strength weekly. Sometimes during the growing season it may get a dose of Worm Juice 3 or 4 times if I remember. When the flower spikes are well progressed, I ensure that the plant is not moved to keep flowers facing in the one direction. Happy Growing. July Judges Winning Selection Rlc. Mt Sylvan Den. Estelle Vanda Janice Allison IT S OUR SHOWTIME in AUGUST Maroochydore Orchid Society Annual Show Set up Thursday 9 TH August - Show open Friday & Saturday 10th & 11 th August Our Annual Show is taking place. I hope you are talking to your orchids nicely so that they are beautiful for the show. There are a couple of things that need to be addressed. 1. We plan to use minimal amount of plastic bags so the use of small boxes and medium sized boxes will be put into practice. So everyone please collect small cardboard boxes and medium boxes. Cut off so that they are about 10cm deep. Even tape up the open end to make another box. Tissue boxes, cereal boxes or wine cask boxes. Happy hoarding. 2. On the Thursday night, we provide a supper to all judges and people who have come to exhibit. We need savoury quiches and other finger food. Del is cooking the dessert for everyone. But some dessert tarts and slices are also needed. If they are not used for the supper, they will be used during the show for morning tea and afternoon tea. Before supper, tickets in a raffle will be sold and the raffle drawn during supper.

6 3. Set up is from 12.00pm on Thursday 9 th August. Tables need to be put up and covered with cloths, chairs need to be put out, foliage mats needs to be put on floor and the section names put out onto the tables. This doesn t take too long. Then we can start putting out our plants onto the tables. After supper, when the judging is taking place, we need 2 people to write the names onto the prize cards and 2 people to put these cards out next to the plants that have won first, second and third. 4. During the 2 days of the show, we need people to sit at the door and collect $3 for entry. There will be a roster at the next meeting. We are hoping to get buses from the retirement homes. They get a special offer. $5 for entry and morning tea. There will be a raffle for $1 with 3 prizes. Peter Henssler OAM does a great job selling tickets. You will have to fight him for this job. 5. Darryl will be doing a potting demonstration at 10.00am( or thereabouts). 6. I encourage all members to come along to the show. It is a time for discussing orchids in a social atmosphere. There is always a visitor who enjoys talking to a local orchid grower. We can also keep an eye on the crowd Happy growing and hoarding, Kathy Bus trip with Nambour Orchid Society On Saturday 30 th June, the people who went on the bus trip organised by the Nambour Orchid Society were lucky enough to visit the bush house of Doug and Cath Wanka who live at Rothwell, between Deception Bay and Redcliffe. The Soft cane dendrobium house was full of very thick and healthy plants all ready to burst into bud. The group was very impressed with Doug s dedication to getting things just right. He showed us the charcoal sorter he uses for the charcoal he burns himself then grades it. His large glass house housed all the hard cane dendrobiums, some assorted cattleyas and a selection of other genera. The conditions were perfect, high roof, lots of light (there was some shade cloth cover for summer) and warm. One side was open to the fence and was covered with shade cloth. This allowed for air flow. There were many flowering dens in this house. Other shade houses contained many other orchids. Many of the flowering cattleyas were for sale and the people on the bus took the opportunity to purchase good, well grown plants. Duncan even bought a cattleya. Cath provided afternoon tea which consisted of hot tea or coffee and several delicious slices. Everyone appreciated the fine food. The raffle was held here with plants from Robertsons Nursery. We wish to thank Doug and Cath for their hospitality. Rod, Joe and Eric checking out possible purchases. Is Duncan going to buy a cattleya?
