Garden Club Groomers have been busy shoveling gravel, not snow. Check out our beautifully maintained garden and the fresh batch of gravel that makes it easier to walk. The Groomers have been busy getting the gardens ready for our House Tour visitors. The Groomers would love to have more help: Thursday s at 8:30am, Join Them! For those who took our recent bus trip to Fairchild Gardens what a fabulous trip. The weather, gardens and Chihuly Glass art was unbelievable. Thank you to 2 nd VP Loi Baltes for her hard work organizing this trip. It s fun to leave the island and have someone else drive. A huge thank you to Linnea Cunningham and her nominating committee for a job well done. Our election of new officers will be held at the March general meeting with installation of officers at the April luncheon. Thanks also to all who have agreed to serve. March 7 brings our 39 th annual House & Garden Tour. This is always a fun event and a chance to get involved and have a good time. We have 5 lovely properties this year from Duck Key to Marathon, so sell those tickets. Thanks to all of our volunteers for all that you do. 2 1st Vice President s Report Reminder Bring your cookies or cheese & crackers to the Club on Friday for the House Tour. Membership Report On Friday March 20th, Lynne Bentley -Kemp will give us Tips on Taking Beautiful Pictures of Plants and Flowers. A college professor for 29 years, Lynne has taught photography at Rochester Institute of Technology (where she received her MFA in printmaking), Florida Keys Community College and Florida Atlantic University (where she received her PhD in Comparative Studies). As an independent scholar/artist, Lynne has been extensively involved with making art and influencing arts advocacy in the Keys community. She is represented by Lucky Street gallery and has curated numerous exhibitions of photography and art. In 2012 she was a recipient of an Ann McKee Artist s Grant. Lynne and her husband live on Cudjoe Key, where they are active gardeners and photographers. Presently, Lynne is on the Key West Garden Club Board of Directors and also served on the boards of Sculpture Key West and The Studios of Key West. She is now an advisory board member for both organizations. Please invite your friends and neighbors. The meeting will begin at 1:00 PM. Please plan on arriving early for refreshments and to catch up with friends. Mary Ann Worthington This month we would like to welcome our newest member Janet De Rosa. While in the Keys Janet resides in Marathon & then spends time in Seekonk, Ma. She has already volunteered to help at the House & Garden Tour. Thank You and Welcome Janet! There are only a very few of you who have not renewed your 2015 membership. Donna will be giving you a call to remind you and I will be at our March meeting to take your dues. Thank you in advance. Phyllis Schewe & Donna Barnes Horticulture Tip HOUSE PLANTS Dead or shabby foliage not only looks unappealing but can also lead to fungal or other diseases if left to rot in the pot. 3 House and Garden Tour Our house tour is the 7th, fast approaching, we have all worked hard to make it a success. Let's all have a wonderful day and enjoy presenting this year s lovely homes to the public. A special thanks to all volunteers for your time and boundless energy. All monies and unsold tickets must be returned to the garden club gift shop prior to the tour. 4 MGC General Meeting Minutes Friday, February 20, 2015 Opening The regular meeting of the Marathon Garden Club was called to order at 1:10 P.M. at the Marathon Garden Club by the President, Rosemary Thomas. The Invocation Poem was given by Janie Byland, which was followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. As there were many visitors, Rosemary asked that they stand and be recognized. Rosemary thanked Loi Baltes and Jay Carvotta as hostesses who baked the wonderful desserts. Rosemary recognized Germaine Main for her beautiful floral design. Rosemary also thanked greeters, Arlene Keeney and Susie Ley. Approval of Minutes: Joanna Karakourtis moved with a second by Germaine Main that the minutes be approved as they appeared in the Seeds for Thought. There were no additions or corrections. Treasurer s Report: Carl Miller presented the highlights of the budget report with the announcement that the Christmas Holiday Treasures sale and the January Jamboree surpassed the budgeted income. Building rentals are lower than the anticipated income but the Scholarship fund was doing very well. The anticipated income budgeted for the House Tour is $13,000. He encouraged the sale of tickets to meet that budgeted figure. Carl presented a copy of the reimbursement expense report form and instructed the group on how to use them. President s Report: Rosemary thanked everyone for the wonderful successful Jan. Jamboree. She recognized Janet Oechsle and Carol Gieck. She also recognized Phyllis Schewe and Donna Barnes for the membership campaign and excellent renewal numbers. The members who made donations with their renewals will be recognized in the Seeds for Thought. Rosemary commented on the wonderful day trip to Fairchild s Gardens planned by Loi Baltes. It was an exceptionally fun event enjoyed by all. 4 House Tour: Sande Neiditz gave a progress report on the House Tour March 7 th. One of the homes needed to be changed, from th Street in Key Colony Beach to 7730 Gulfstream Boulevard in Marathon. Hostesses are still needed. Linnea needs 2 persons, Paula three people and Scarlet 2 people. Barbara Driscoll reminded people to bring cookies or cheese and crackers for Friday evening and Saturday. There were House Tour posters to be distributed around town. Gift Shop: Alene mentioned some items for sale in the gift shop. Nominating Committee: Linnea Cunningham, Chairperson of the Nominating Committee presented the slate of Officers for the next two years. They are: President: Sande Neiditz 1 st Vice President: Sandy Bourgeois 2 nd Vice President: Anne Reams 3 rd Vice President: Dale Chorebanian Recording Secretary: Sarah Lytle Corresponding Secretary: Cindy Wooten Treasurers: Loyal Eldridge/ Carl Miller Board Members: Loi Baltes, Scarlett Duffy, Janet Oechsle, and Sally Wood. The slate will be voted on at the next membership meeting. Announcements: Claudia made an announcement about the Florida Keys Concert Monday night and the Early Bird Season Ticket for next season. As there was no further business, Joanna Karakourtis moved with a second by Scarlett Duffy that the meeting be adjourned. Mary Ann Worthington announced the speaker Ashley Hill from the Coral Restoration Foundation who gave a very interesting slide presentation on planting corals to restore the reef. Funds from the raffle following the meeting were donated to the Foundation. Carl Miller read a letter he wrote to Ken Nedimeyer, President of the Foundation with a donation of $ for the Foundation.
