1 Redbud Reporter June 2012 Cercis Canadensis Eastern Redbud REDBUD DISTRICT The Garden Club of Georgia National Garden Club, Inc. Rene Faulkenberry, Director Beth Wielage, Co-director Gail Berthe, Editor Renie Our District Director s Message to the Remarkable Redbuds Remarkable Redbuds are Tending many Gardens Remember to plan ahead so all your Gardens may be Tended. Dear Redbud Garden Club members, The June wedding of our son in our front and back yards was magical and exhausting. Hooray the spring-like weather remained until all the out of town guests departed. Rigby Duncan, Redbud Treasurer and currently the ListServ manager, presided over the gathering of her clan to celebrate her mother s 100 th birthday. We will both be functioning tip top very soon. I wish to congratulate Betty Lester and all her helpers in LaGrange for putting on a wonderful Basic Design Series. The instructors were fabulous and the student designs better with each session. I hope that a few new folks will try their hand at entering the Design categories of the Yellow Daisy Flower Show this September 7-9 th. Show the instructors how much you have learned. Plan Ahead August 13 th --Redbud Board meeting in the Dauset Trails Auditorium, Jackson. September 7-9 th --Yellow Daisy Flower Show, The Greatest Show on Earth, at Stone Mountain Park. Join in the Redbud annual celebration with a design or horticulture. I wish everyone a Blue Ribbon. September th --Tri-refresher, Griffin. Gail Berthe and her committee have put together a mix of classes and excursions to enhance your knowledge. What is happening in the small towns of Georgia? Don t miss this convenient chance to refresh. October 16 th -- The October meeting of Redbud garden club members at Rock Ranch near Thomaston. Be sure to plan to attend. The three clubs of the West Central Georgia Garden Council are working hard to create an exciting day. DeKalb Federation members may want to scout this event as 2013 will be their responsibility. Please send me pictures of your garden club activities--i would like very much to be able to share with the entire assembly of Redbuds at the October meeting. Remember to drink your water before you go out to the garden.

Let s look at some more variety for your garden. Here are some really interesting plants for us to think about. First is Campanula Kent Belle, Hybrid Bellflower. This perennial plant has spectacular bright blue blooms. Easy to grow, but needs steady moisture. Great cutflower. Does not self seed. Grows 4 feet tall. Perfect for back of the cutting garden. Needs well-drained average loose soil. Look at this! Actinidia arguta, Ornamental Kiwi looked so interesting I couldn t resist telling you about it. It is a fast growing vine that can quickly cover a trellis or screen. Hardy, easy to grow. Can grow to twenty feet, but pruning will keep it compact. Flowers are fragrant. Likes well-drained soil and a sunny spot. Enjoy your garden! These plants can be found at heronswood.com.
