2 Redbud District News A note from your editor: As I was putting this newsletter together and looking for humorous/appropriate clip art to include with many of the items I came across this clip art. My thought was immediately is this how our chairmen and directors feel after juggling their various duties? We each of us owe the many many patient and tireless persons who make possible the activities and accomplishments of our local clubs, the district organization, the administration at the state and national level. Please keep juggling and know you are appreciated. GLB Redbud District Committee Reports Redbud Reporter, Gail Berthe, Editor The Redbud Reporter is published four times a year as suggested by NGC. It is divided into three sections, Redbud District News, Garden Club of Georgia News (including NGC information), and Local Club Activities. The next edition, which will be published shortly after the Redbud District meeting on February 13, will include summaries of each specific committee active in Redbud District. This is a new communication initiative promoted by the district director, Renie Faulkenberry. News is solicited from all clubs and district committees by listserver communication prior to publishing date. Plant It Pink, Vivian Toney, GCG Chairman Garden Club of GA. and the Deep South Regional Garden Clubs are supporting the National Garden Clubs Plant It Pink Special Project to give women the gift of hope by promoting a passion for pink by PLANTING PINK FLOWERS at hospitals, cancer centers, memorial gardens and private gardens, which can be your garden. There is a new award: # 50 Plant It Pink. A Book of Evidence not required. See Award # 50 in the Guide for requirements. Pink glove and Pink trowel certificates will be presented to clubs who apply. Plan to apply for the 2013 Awards. We all can think of many pink flowers and bulbs to plant and for those that like roses, consider planting the trouble free knock-me-out pink roses and with these you are also making a statement of helping knock-out breast cancer. You might plant your flowers or/and bulbs in the shape of the breast aware ribbon to make a statement. Breast cancer has touch each of us. WOMAN TO WOMAN, Make a statement with PINK FLOWERS for BREAST CANCER AWARENESS! 2

It s free, fun, and easy and it helps the birds. Participants count birds anywhere for as little or as long as they wish during the four-day period. They tally the highest number of birds of each species seen together at any one time. To report their counts, they fill out an online checklist at the Great Backyard Bird Count website. 7 Improved Cultivars, Vickey Cooper, Chairman Spring will soon arrive with all its wondrous new beginnings. Here are some plants to make you think SPRING. (For future correct horticulture nomenclature please note the approved form for Genus species, Cultivar You need to know this for horticulture cards for Yellow Daisy!) Cornus sanguinea, Arctic Sun is a fun new dogwood grown for bloom as well as winter interest. The plant is compact and shrubby with stems that turn golden with red tips in winter. The leaves are medium green, turning golden in fall. It can grow in partial sun or full shade. Plant in rich, well drained soil 3-5 feet apart. The low, dense form earns this shrub a home even in smaller gardens. Wisteria frutescens Amethyst Falls is a native offering an excellent alternative to the Oriental types. It flowers at a younger age and is non-invasive. Because it is more compact, you can even prune it to grow in a large container on the patio. The large, deep blue-purple blooms will keep your attention in late spring and even in summer. Amethyst Falls will grow in full sun or part shade. Wisteria can be late to leaf out the first year. This is a great chance to grow this beautiful vine without fear of it taking over the yard. If you can t find these lovelies at your local garden center, ask them to order for you. The source is White Flower Farm. You can also order directly from farm.com. Air and Water Quality, Mary Lovings, Chairman Georgia Waters: some random thoughts and concepts to ponder: Rivers form natural boundaries between Georgia and her neighbors Georgia rivers flow into both the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Ocean Widening the Panama Canal will affect ports needing to accommodate larger ships St Mary s River keeps the Okeefenokee Swamp hydrated The Chattahoochee, Flint, and Apalachicola Rivers are necessary to maintain water flow for navigation, wildlife, drinking water and recreation The Tennessee River is politically important as the disputed border between GA and TN If Georgia was an independent country it would be the world s 27 th largest! Mary has a good summary of these facts. Contact her for your copy. marmgl@bellsouth.net Mary Denney, Arboreta, Botanical & Memorial Gardens Chairman Funds are flowing in for contributions to Arboreta, Botanical & Memorial Gardens from all over the state. Redbud clubs have not participated as well as in prior years. This chairman encourages each club president to discuss the importance of this project at their next meeting and to forward a contribution before March 15 th to state chairman Mary Denny, 500 Haynie Road, Moreland, Georgia

13 Basic Design - Fun with Flowers in LaGrange - March 13, a.m. 3 p.m. See attachments. Subsequent classes in the series will be scheduled in the coming months. At Home With Flowers: Basic Design I "At Home With Flowers," a Basic Design Course in floral design, is taught by certified instructors at many places in the state of Georgia. Basic Design Class at Callanwolde The course consists of a series of five daylong classes that are usually spaced several months apart to allow some practice time in between the different topics. Unit I is a study of line and line mass designs. Basic design principles are taught and students complete designs that are critiqued at the end of the class. Unit II is mass and foliage designs, with the addition of material on color harmonies. Unit III involves table designs, with the students bringing coordinating table components to go with their floral design work. Unit IV makes use of fruits and vegetables and adds the creative touch of a featured object. Unit V is the last and most challenging course. It is a study of creative design making use of pieces of driftwood, unusual containers and plant material used in creative ways. Also miniature designs are studied in this unit. A typical class will begin with the instructor giving information about the type of design, making several designs as a demonstration, and answering questions. After a lunch break, participants create a design with help from the instructor, and display their design for constructive comments from the instructor. A supply list is provided for each course ahead of time. There are no tests or exams given; however, upon the completion of the series the Garden Club of Georgia, Inc. awards a certificate to each participant who completes all five units of study. Betty Grimes with her design This is a "fun" course of study to assist students in learning some basic flower arranging skills. Hope you will join us for the course. 16 16 Legislative Report The Garden Club of Georgia, Inc. Mission: Beautification Conservation Education Legislation & Governmental Affairs: Tally Sweat, Chairman; Mary Lovings, Marian Hill, Advisor Helen Grogan and Johnnie Berry, Committee Club Representatives Good News from Tally Sweat, Chairman of the Legislative Committee, regarding the temporary blocking of cutting trees on the highway right of ways in January, 2012 Judge blocks tree cutting on rights of way By: Dorothy McDaniel, Executive Director, Trees Columbus, Inc. NEWS RELEASE Published: January 17, 2012 Updated: January 17, :45 PM COLUMBUS, Ga. -- Superior Court Judge Frank Jordan issued an injunction this morning in effect blocking any tree cutting on Georgia rights of way until he rules on the constitutionality of HB 179. HB 179 was passed by the Georgia Legislature and signed into law by Governor Nathan Deal in The law greatly enhanced the outdoor advertising industry s ability not only to cut existing trees on the rights of way, but to also prevent tree plantings as a part of local beautification projects. The City of Columbus, Columbus Gateways and Trees Columbus filed a lawsuit in Superior Court challenging the constitutionality of the new law because of its adverse effect on the city. Under the terms of the new law, trees previously planted as part of beautification projects could be cut, an activity prohibited under the previous law. Also, planting prohibitions in the new law would decimate the tree plantings planned as a part of the Veterans Parkway Streetscape and other local beautification projects. HB 179 was opposed by a coalition of environmental groups including the Garden Club of Georgia, The Georgia Conservancy, Scenic Georgia, the Sierra Club, Trees Columbus, Trees Atlanta, Keep Columbus Beautiful and other local conservation and beautification programs. The bill passed by a handful of votes after an intense lobbying campaign by the Outdoor Advertising Association of Georgia in which they spent more than $200,000. The Muscogee County delegation was unanimous in its opposition to the bill. Trees Columbus representatives communicated the bill s flaws throughout the 2011 legislative session, and the litigation challenges the statute on several constitutional grounds. We are pleased that Judge Jordan has seen fit to issue an injunction in this case to prevent any tree cutting until the constitutionality of HB 179 can be completely adjudicated, stated Trees Columbus Executive Director Dorothy McDaniel in commenting on Judge Jordan s injunction. We remain convinced the HB 179 is unconstitutional because it violates the gratuity clause of

17 the state constitution by giving billboards a free visual easement, by not charging the full value of trees removed and dedicating a portion of state highway rights of way for the exclusive use of the billboard companies. No other industry is given the right to cut trees on the state rights of way to make their business or signs advertising their business more visible. A second related article published January 17, 2012 can be found: and concerns Columbus winning a temporary injunction against billboard companies cutting roadside trees. PLEASE NOTE: Legislative messages are sent to inform members and to help fill the Education part of the GCG Mission in a way that is neither partisan nor personal and within 501(c)(3) constraints. To do effective volunteer advocacy, members need information and are often directed to additional sources for continued constituent self- education. GCG's effective advocacy is respected and effective statewide. Your participation is important; it helps Conservation happen in Georgia. Please remember how important this information is to us as members of GCG and as citizens of the state of Georgia. These messages will continue throughout the legislative season. Be aware of them and participate at the level comfortable for you. Share in information with your club and promote a better Georgia. Mary Lovings and the members of the committee deserve and need our full support. Garden Club of Georgia News 17 Convention News Garden Club of Georgia, Inc. will for the second time celebrate its annual meeting as a 24 hour time together. Coming on the afternoon of April 16 the event will conclude the next day after the Life Member Lunch on April 17. As reported by Deanna McFarlan in our Redbud District Reports the Annual GCG Meeting 2012 is in Macon at the Marriott. The first meeting in 2010 was the trial run for the One Day Meeting. 19 Local Redbud District Club News Mimosa Garden Club, Jackson, GA Mimosa Garden Club has just helped to complete a raised gardens area for Stark Elementary School. We worked with Butts County leadership team and was sponsored by Hyponex Corporation and Rental Solutions here in Jackson Georgia.. The garden will be used by the pre-k class to start learning how to grow vegetables. Our understanding is that when they are picked, the cafeteria will prepare them for these children. Our goal is that these children teach there parents how to grow a garden at home. Conservation and Restoration Efforts Continue in the Lullwater Conservation Garden, Atlanta, GA The Lullwater Garden Club (LGC) continued their efforts with regard to restoration and conservation by undertaking two major projects this fall in the Lullwater Conservation Garden. Since 2007 the Club has worked diligently with community support to return this Piedmont Forest to its original grandeur. This year, the club partnered with Terry Sutton from Cascade Springs Forestry to develop a short, mid and long term plan for the garden and to continue the removal of invasive plants. The results have been dramatic. Pictured here is one path of the Garden Before and After Terry and his team completed their work. The LGC will continue to search out funding opportunities to enable Terry s full plan to be implemented. They are also embarking on an educational labeling project for the 6 champion tress that have been identified within the Garden. 19

20 In addition, several knights in shining armor volunteered to restore the 60+ year old wishing well roof and surround. This structure had become very dilapidated and was in danger of collapsing. It took well longer than anticipated as much of the lumber was original to the structure. However, the men persevered over the Thanksgiving and Christmas Holidays and a beautiful result was achieved. Before During and After Pictured from left to right: George Clarke, Scott Storbeck, Jim Heerin and Zorro Canine, Ivan Faulkenberry and Chase Storbeck Well Done! Lullwater Garden Club Sponsors New DeKalb Federation Award In 2011, the Lullwater Garden Club decided to sponsor the new Award #34 for the DeKalb Federation entitled Lullwater GC National Garden Week Award. The award is a perpetual silver trophy that was donated by the Club to be awarded to the Garden Club with the best overall promotion of National Garden Week. The tray will be presented to Lorraine Loftis, Renie Faulkenberry and Kim Storbeck at the January 20, 2012 LGC meeting for delivery to the DeKalb Federation. Pictured at right is the beautiful new silver tray. 20

21 DRUID HILLS Home and Garden Tour 2012 THE SECOND CENTURY Please mark your calendar for the 2012 Druid Hills Home and Garden Tour and Artist Market. The 2012 Tour will feature homes and gardens in this historic neighborhood. During the tour, the neighborhood opens its doors to the community from April 20-22, This annual spring rite raises money to preserve the historical integrity of the Druid Hills neighborhood, designed by famed landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In addition to gaining access to historically preserved residences and garden jewels, tour goers are invited to shop at an artist market that features juried artworks offered at a wide range of prices. Driftwood Garden Club Newnan, GA For the second year in a row, Driftwood Garden Club of Newnan has been awarded a matching grant from The Garden Club of Georgia, Inc. to assist in the cost of landscaping the entrance to The Centre for Performing and Visual Arts on Lower Fayetteville Road. The Community on My Mind Grant Fund was established by the GCG to support local garden club work that provides local benefits in communities around the State. Funding for the grant program was made possible by a generous donation from the Georgia Power Foundation. One of the original stated purposes of the Driftwood Club in 1959 was to aid in the beautification of civic planting. Driftwood has carried out this purpose most recently by annual plantings in the city park on Lagrange Street and planting of the hanging baskets for the lamp posts in Downtown Newnan. Landscaping the entrance to the Centre is the Club s newest beautification project. The GCG grant was matched by Club funds and further supported by private donations. The Driftwood Garden Club s December Meeting was held at the lovely home of Dr. and Mrs. Pat Yancey, Jr. The Driftwood Garden Club Fig Leaf project is to collect items for the Garden Therapy Project through The Federated Garden Clubs of Georgia. Mrs. Hadley Heindel is the chair and pictured with Ms. Randa Herring. The hostesses for the event were: Mrs. Jerry Hamilton, Mrs. Jack Giles, Mrs. Pat Yancey, Mrs. Charles McPherson, Mrs. Pat Yancey, Jr., Mrs. Sam Ray, not pictured Mrs. Gary Craddock 21
