3 FIRE PROTECTION CABINETS FOR CABLE INSTALLATIONS A great number of fi res in Germany result from problems in the electronic installations. Many mistakes are already done when these installations are planned and executed. Therefore, when building projects are adjusted to fi re protectional purposes, engineers as well as switchgear builders, operators and installers must consider the preventive constructional fi re protection from the very fi rst beginning. Apart from creating escape routes which are free from fi re-loads the assurance of the functionality of the security-related installations is of signifi cant importance, particularly in industrial and public buildings. The duration of the functional integrity* must be maintained for at least 90 min. for: - Water pressure boosting systems supplying extinguishing water, - Mechanical smoke extraction systems and fume protection alarm systems for necessary stairways in high-rise buildings special constructions, which, in particular cases, require such systems; (...) - Bed elevators in hospitals and other structural facilities with similar purposes as well as fi re brigade lifts. (...) The duration of the functional integrity* must be maintained for at least 30 min. for: - Safety lighting systems; with the exception of power supplies which are meant to supply the safety lighting only for one single fi re section within a fl oor level or within a stairs room; (...) - Personal lifts with fi re alarm control contact; (...) - Fire alarm systems including the related transmission equipment; (...) - Systems that announce and issue directives to visitors and employees, insofar as these systems must be effective in case of fi re; (...) - Natural smoke extraction systems (smoke extraction by thermal lift); with the exception of systems that open automatically in case of a power failure, as well as cable installations in rooms which are controlled by automatic fire detectors and in which the response of a smoke detector triggers the automatic opening of the system. [*Reference:German Model Guideline for Fire Protection concerning Cable Installations (M)LAR / 5.3.2] Fire-proof cabinets must always be evaluated considerating constructional fi re protection factors as well as electrical engineering aspects. The components or enclosures which surround the electronic distributions must be designed in such a manner that in case of fi re the function of the electronic facilities must be unrestrictedly preserved over the required period. During a fi re test the fi re behaviour of the specimen is determined in dependence of the time. In the test chamber the specimen is exposed to a standard fi re attack according to the internationally acknowledged temperature time curve (ETK)

The specifi c requirements for the functional preservation of technical installations are specifi ed in the German Model Guideline for Fire Protection concerning Cable Installations (M)LAR. (M)LAR Power supply cable layouts for safety-related installations and facilities required by the building regulations have to be constructed or separated from each other by special components in such a way that in case of fi re the safety related installations and facilities will keep their functionality for a suffi ciently long time (functional integrity). This functional integrity must be guaranteed during a possible interaction with other installations, facilities or parts of those. (M)LAR Distributions for power supply cable layouts with functional integrity (...) must (a) be kept in separate rooms which are not used for other purposes, separated towards other rooms by means of walls, ceilings and doors possessing a fi re resistance according to the requested functional integrity time and consisting - with exception of the doors - of non-combustible building materials, (b) be separated by enclosures, for which the functional capability of the installed electrotechnical components has been approved by the building authorities. (c) be enclosed with components (including their connections) which possess a fi re resistance according to the requried functional integrity time and which consist (with exception of the connections) of non-combustible building materials. It has to be made sure, however, that in case of fi re the functional capability of the electrotechnical installations of the distribution is guaranteed during the required functional integrity time. Quality and safety of our structural fi re protection products are given proof of by means of fl ammability tests acc. to DIN or applicable EN-standards, which are executed by an offi cial certifi cation authority. A test or classifi cation report will be issued on the product, based on which a general technical approval (AbZ), a general structural certifi cate (AbP) or an approval on a case-by-case-basis (ZiE) can be applied for. 6 FIRE PROTECTION CABINETS EAS fi re protection cabinets are used in applications which serve to protect safety devices required by law and to store materials particularly sensitive to fi re in buildings which are subject to special safety regulations. They are used in building objects which must be brought into accordance with fi re protection requirements or in places where the risks of damages or costs resulting from a fi re, must be reduced to a minimum. Our fi re protection cabinets were tested on the basis of the DIN standard in compliance with the regulations of the recognized offi cial German material testing authorities. A fi re resistance duration of 30 respectively 90 minutes under a fi re exposure from the outside was approved according to the state building regulations. For selected cabinets of this series, which were equipped with installations according to the individual requirements of the user, functional integrity* could be prooved, e.g. for safety-relevant installations like fi re alarm systems. In these tests, pre-defi ned electric components were built into the fi re protection enclosure. The tests showed that the drives of the connected detectors and signal generators kept their functionality over a period of at least 30 min. Further fi re tests to show the possible effects on the functionality of electric fi ttings were carried out by exemplarily installing additional groups of electric devices, like clamps, safety fuses, (automatic) circuit-breakers, neozed elements, contactors, electronic components, and impulse current switches. These function tests where executed with maximum device confi guration under load and under most demanding ambient conditions. Result: Functional integrity of the loaded electrical operating material was given during a period of 30 respectively 90 minutes. *In order to avoid any misunderstandings we would like to point out that functional integrity can only be accounted for predetermined cabinets with defi nite installations and cannot be proven generally and independently from the objects to be installed
