7 Introduction 0-3 General Instructions Regarding Working with Application Materials Definition of Terms Application materials can be e.g. thermoplastic hot melt materials, adhesives, sealants, liquid adhesives and similar application materials. They are referred to as materials. NOTE: The materials that may be processed with your Nordson product are described in the manual under Intended Use and Unintended Use. When in doubt, please contact your Nordson representative. Manufacturer Information Materials may be processed only when the manufacturer s product descriptions and Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) are observed. They provide information, amongst other things, on correct processing of the product, transport, storage and disposal. Information regarding reactivity and potentially hazardous decomposition products, toxic properties, flash points, etc. can also be found there. 8 0-4 Introduction Vapors and Gases Ensure that vapors and gases do not exceed the prescribed limits. If necessary, exhaust vapors and gases and/or provide sufficient ventilation of the work space. Substrate The substrate should be free of dust, grease and moisture. The suitable material, optimum working conditions, and possible pre-treatment of the substrate must be determined by testing. Processing Temperature When materials require heating, adherence to the prescribed processing temperature is imperative to ensure the quality of the application. It may not be exceeded! Overheating can cause material coking or cracking, resulting in malfunctioning or unit failure. Material should always be melted gently. Extended, unnecessary temperature load should be avoided. The temperature should be reduced during breaks in work. The temperature in the tank should be attuned to the material consumption. Thus it is close to the prescribed processing temperature for high material consumption and lower for lower consumption. When materials are processed cold, take into consideration the shear heat and the ambient temperature; cool if necessary. HMI02_EN_C Nordson Corporation

23 Level Monitor LA Description of Functioning Fig. 2 O891 Single-rod probe Conductive Level Monitoring The level of electrically conductive materials can be monitored with the aid of a single-rod probe or a dual-rod probe. Level control with rod probes is based on measurement of conductivity. NOTE: Conductive rod probes only work in water or water-based adhesives. The ultrasound sensor is used to monitor the level of materials that are not water-based. The single-rod probe (Fig. 2) is used in conductive containers (e.g. stainless steel pressure tanks). The electrically conductive container wall serves as the counter-electrode with this rod probe. The dual-rod probe (Fig. 3) is used in non-conductive containers (e.g. plastic containers). If the electrode of the rod probe (5, Fig. 1) used is surrounded by the material to be monitored, the green status LED (1, Fig. 1) is illuminated. If the level of the material being monitored falls below the tip of the electrode(s), the green LED goes off and the red status LED lights up. This causes the evaluator (2, Fig. 1) to trigger a switching command. This can activate an additional periphery and/or signal unit that is connected. The length of the electrode(s) can affect the desired or required quantity remaining in the container. Shorten the electrodes if needed. Fig. 3 O892 Dual-rod probe NOTE: No settings having to do with sensitivity or measurement behavior can be made on the evaluator or the rod probes Nordson Corporation LA 100

24 16 Level Monitor LA 100 Description of Functioning (contd.) Fig. 4 O893 Ultrasound sensor Ultrasound Level Measurement The level of non-conductive materials can be monitored with the aid of an ultrasound sensor (Fig. 4). Level control with an ultrasound sensor is based on measurement of operating time. The pulses transmitted by the ultrasound sensor are reflected off the surface of the material being monitored and then captured again. The deduced operating time is compiled as the level value. If the level of the material being monitored falls below a previously set limit, the green LED goes off and the red status LED lights up (1, Fig. 1). This causes the evaluator (2, Fig. 1) to trigger a switching command. This can activate an additional periphery and/or signal unit that is connected. When the material being monitored is changed, the ultrasound sensor may need to be recalibrated (Refer to Connecting Level Monitor in the section Installation). NOTE: Use one of the rod probes to measure conductive materials (e.g. water or water-based adhesives). LA Nordson Corporation
