SOC Drawings VS. Fire & Life Safety Drawings Terms used interchangeably by some firms RL Dooley Architect defines SOC drawings as those provided for TJC and CMS review, and F&LS drawings as those provided for review by building permit issuing agencies (i.e. city building departments) There are similarities and differences SOC drawings based on criteria in NFPA , and F&LS drawings based on criteria in 2012 IBC

SOC Drawing Criteria From TJC EOC News, February 2012 A legend that clearly identifies features of fire safety Areas of the building that are fully sprinklered (if the building is partially sprinklered) Locations of all hazardous storage areas Locations of all rated barriers Locations of all smoke barriers Locations of designated smoke compartments Locations of chutes and shafts Any approved equivalencies or Waivers

SOC Drawing Criteria (Continued) Suite boundaries, including the size of the identified suites both sleeping (max 5,000 sq ft) and non-sleeping (max 10,000 SF) Categorical waiver from CMS based on the 2012 Life Safety Code allows an increase to 10,000 SF for a sleeping room suite.

F&LS Drawings How many attended the WSSHE Annual Convention in Vancouver? If you were there, did you attend the Family Feud? Three teams formed: SW Chapter Puget Sound Chapter East Chapter Questions created by John Williams, one of which asked about components of Fire & Life Safety Drawings.

Exits F&LS Drawings From WSSHE Annual Family Feud Smoke Compartments Rated Construction Travel Distances Suites Exit Access Corridors Some jurisdictions want occupant loads, and exit width calculations provided Red Text not part of SOC drawings

CMS SEEMS TO GO ON THE PRINCIPAL THAT ANYTHING CONSTRUCTED ON OR BEFORE THE DATE THAT THEY ADOPTED THE LATEST EDITION OF THE LSC WILL BE CONSIDERED EXISTING, AND ANYTHING CONSTRUCTED AFTER THE DATE THEY ADOPTED THE LSC WILL BE CONSIDERED NEW.
