Cables for Video/Security Applications Coaxial Cables- The Science explained. Coaxial cables are designed to carry radio frequency signals of a much higher frequency than the 50 or 60 Hz used in low voltage cables. This requires special construction to prevent power losses. If an ordinary wire is used to carry high frequency signals, the wire acts as an antenna, and the high frequency signals radiate off the wire as radio waves, causing power losses. To prevent this, in coaxial cable one of the conductors is formed into a tube and encloses the other conductor. This confines the radio waves from the central conductor to the space inside the tube. To prevent the outer conductor, or shield, from radiating, it is connected to electrical ground, keeping it at a constant potential. The dimensions and spacing of the conductors must be uniform throughout the length of the cable. Any abrupt change in the spacing of the two conductors along the cable tends to reflect radio frequency power back toward the source. This acts as a bottleneck, reducing the amount of power reaching the destination end of the cable. BT Security-Tec
BT Security-Tec Coaxial Cables- Making the Right Choice Most coaxial cables for video applications have a nominal impedance of 75 ohms. Their differing electrical and physical characteristics make it important to select the correct type of cable to suit the application. BT Security-Tec

Cables for Data Transfer Applications Category Cables for LAN and Structured Wiring Systems Ethernet cables are grouped into sequentially numbered categories ( cat ) based on different specifications; sometimes the category is updated with further clarification or testing standards (e.g. 5e, 6a). These categories are how we can easily know what type of cable we need for a specific application. BT Data-Tec
Cables for Data Transfer Applications Category Cables Shielding While not all environments demand such a robust cable, shielding is becoming more common. When it first became available, shielded cables were used in areas such as factory floors, areas with high concentrations of electrical equipment, and secure communications applications. Today, shielded cable is prevalent in many types of applications, including government, healthcare and even education. Acronym U/UTP F/UTP (FTP) U/FTP F/FTP S/UTP SF/UTP S/FTP Description This cable is not shielded at all, and is the common unshielded cable most often referred to as UTP cable. An overall foil shield (F) with unscreened twisted pairs (UTP). This cable is very much like common UTP cables, with the addition of foil underneath the main cable jacket. Another common name for this cable is FTP. F/UTP cables are common in 10GBaseT applications. No overall shielding or braid (U) with foil screened twisted pairs (FTP). This type of shielded cable is commonly used in 10GBaseT applications as well An overall foil shield (F) with foil screened twisted pairs (FTP). Similar to F/UTP cables, these shielded cables are commonly used in 10GBaseT applications An overall braid screen (S) with unscreened twisted pairs (UTP). This is occasionally referred to as an STP cable, but beware: There are other shielded cables among this list that may also claim this term. To be sure, always check to see whether your cable will have any kind of overall barrier, and whether the individual pairs have their own shield. Both an overall braid screen (S) and foil shield (F) with unscreened twisted pairs (UTP). This cable is also occasionally referred to as an STP cable. Cables with an overall braided screen are very effective at protecting EMI from entering or exiting the cable. An overall braid screen (S) with foil screened twisted pairs (FTP). The shield underneath the jacket is a braid, and each individual pair is surrounded by its own foil barrier. The purpose of the additional foil on individual pairs is to limit the amount of crosstalk between them.

Cables for Data Transfer Applications Category 3 Cables Category 3 cable, commonly known as Cat 3 or station wire, and less commonly known as VG or Voice-grade (as, for example, in 100BaseVG), is an unshielded twisted pair (UTP) cable used in telephone wiring. BT Data-Tec
Cables for Data Transfer Applications BT Data-Tec - Category 5e Cables Twisted pair cable for computer networks such as Ethernet. Standard provides performance of up to 100 MHz Suitable for 10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX (Fast Ethernet), and 1000BASE-T (Gigabit Ethernet). Also used to carry other signals such as telephony and video. BT Data-Tec
Cables for Data Transfer Applications Category 6 Cables Standardized twisted pair cable for Gigabit Ethernet and other network physical layers. Backward compatible with the Category 5/5e and Category 3 cable standards. More stringent specifications for crosstalk and system noise. The cable standard provides performance of up to 250 MHz Suitable for 10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX (Fast Ethernet), 1000BASE-T/1000BASE-TX (Gigabit Ethernet), and 10GBASE-T (10-Gigabit Ethernet) over a maximum length of 55m. BT Data-Tec
Cables for Data Transfer Applications Category 6A Cables With similar performance to Cat 6 Doubled rating up to 500MHZ This allows 10GBASE-T to be run over longer distances (Up to 100m). BT Data-Tec
Cables for Data Transfer Applications BT Data-Tec - Category 7 Cables Backward compatible with Category 5e and 6. Even stricter specifications for crosstalk and system noise than Cat 6. To achieve this, shielding has been added for individual wire pairs and the cable as a whole. Besides the shield, the twisting of the pairs and number of turns per unit length increases RF shielding and protects from crosstalk. The Category 7 cable standard has been created to allow 10 Gigabit Ethernet over 100 m of copper cabling When combined with correct accessories, Category 7 cable is rated for transmission frequencies of up to 600 MHz BT Data-Tec

Optical Fibre Cables What is Optical Fibre A fibre-optic cable is made up of incredibly thin strands of glass or plastic known as optical fibres; one cable can have as few as two strands or as many as several hundred. Each strand is less than a tenth as thick as a human hair and can carry something like 25,000 telephone calls, so an entire fibre-optic cable can easily carry several million calls. Light travels down a fibre-optic cable by bouncing repeatedly off the walls. Each tiny photon (particle of light) bounces down the pipe like a bobsleigh going down an ice run. Now you might expect a beam of light, traveling in a clear glass pipe, simply to leak out of the edges. But if light hits glass at a really shallow angle (less than 42 degrees), it reflects back in again as though the glass were really a mirror. This phenomenon is called total internal reflection. It's one of the things that keeps light inside the pipe. The other thing that keeps light in the pipe is the structure of the fibre, which is made up of two separate parts. The main part of the fibre in the middle is called the core and that's the bit the light travels through. Wrapped around the outside of the core is another layer of glass called the cladding. The cladding's job is to keep the light signals inside the core. It can do this because it is made of a different type of glass to the core. (More technically, the cladding has a lower refractive index.) BT Optical-Tec
Optical Fibre Cables Types of Fibre The simplest type of optical fibre is called single-mode. It has a very thin core about 5-10 microns (millionths of a meter) in diameter. In a single-mode fibre, all signals travel straight down the middle without bouncing off the edges (red line in diagram). Cable TV, Internet, and telephone signals are generally carried by single-mode fibres, wrapped together into a huge bundle. Cables like this can send information over 100 km (60 miles). Another type of fibre-optic cable is called multi-mode. The core of each optical fibre in a multi-mode cable is about 5-6 times bigger than one in a single-mode cable. This means light beams can travel through the core by following a variety of different paths (purple, green, and blue lines) in other words, in multiple different modes. Multi-mode cables can send information only over relatively short distances and are used (among other things) to link computer networks together BT Optical-Tec

Structured Cabling System Patch Panels Mounted hardware units containing an assembly of port locations in a communications or other electronic or electrical system. In a network, a patch panel serves as a sort of static switchboard, using cables to interconnect computers within the area of a local area network (LAN) and to the outside for connection to the Internet or other wide area network (WAN). A patch panel uses a sort of jumper cable called patch cord to create each interconnection. In a modular system, Keystone jacks can be plugged into an unloaded patch panel. A keystone jack is a standardized snap-in package for connecting into a patch panel. BT NS
Structured Cabling System Patch leads (or patch cords) Leads of (usually) stranded copper pairs, pre-terminated in a factory with 8P8C (RJ45 type) moulded connectors. 87 The Construction Products Regulation- Cables The Construction Product Regulation (CPR) is intended to ensure reliable information on construction products in relation to their performance. This is achieved by providing a common technical language, offering uniform assessment methods for the performance of construction products. These methods are compiled in harmonised technical specifications. This common technical language is to be applied by: the manufacturers when declaring the performance of their products, but also by the authorities of Member States when specifying requirements for them and by their users (architects, engineers, constructors, etc.) when choosing the products that are most suitable for their intended use in construction works. In respect to Cables, The CPR relates to the REACTION TO FIRE performance. The appropriate harmonised standards are the harmonised Product Standards covering reaction-to-fire products (EN 50575: 2014)
