3 PoolBuddy Installation IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS 1. Read and follow all instructions. 2. PoolBuddy must only be installed by a professional pool service technician, or a qualified plumber. 3. WARNING Risk of electric shock. PoolBuddy plugs into a mains socket outlet, this socket must have been installed a by a licensed electrician according to AS/NZS WARNING PoolBuddy must be installed at a safe distance from pump motors, power transformers or high voltage power lines 5. WARNING PoolBuddy is not water proof, it should be installed in a location under cover, usually it resides in the pump shed with the other pool equipment. 6. It should not be exposed to direct sunlight. 7. WARNING State regulations governing the minimum distance electrical equipment can be installed from the water edge, must be adhered to. 4 1 What s Included? 1.1 PoolBuddy (basic model) The basic PoolBuddy kit consists of the following components. It measures ph, ORP and water temperature. 1 PoolBuddy Power Supply unit (5.1V/2.5A) 2 PoolBuddy unit supporting ORP. ph and Temperature sensors 3 ORP electrode mounting kit 3/4" (20) BSP 4 ph electrode mounting kit 3/4" (20) BSP 5 Temperature sensor mounting kit (thermowell) 1/2" NTP 6 Temperature sensor expansion cable (3 meters) 7 Temperature sensor (80 cm) 8 ph electrode/sensor (3-meter cable) 9 ORP electrode/sensor (3-meter cable) 4

5 1.2 PoolBuddy Flow PoolBuddy Flow measures ph, ORP, water temperature and water flow (pump operation). 6 2 Installation 2.1 Unpack and check parts Unpack and verify all required parts are present in the PoolBuddy kit, according to the previous section. 2.2 Test PoolBuddy Unit (without sensors) It is best to test that PoolBuddy works, from the location it will be installed in, to ensure WIFI or 4G reception is available, before modifying any customers equipment. Before installing PoolBuddy into a customer s pool, it is first tested in standalone mode to ensure all is working, and that PoolBuddy can successfully connect over 4G or WIFI, and upload data. Only after this operation has been completed successfully, should any changes to the customers equipment be performed. Power up the PoolBuddy unit (no electrodes/sensors attached). If you are installing PoolBuddy onto a customer s WIFI network, you will need to follow the instructions as per Section 2, PoolBuddy WIFI configuration. Follow the instructions and verify PoolBuddy is uploading data, by logging into your account at staging.poolbuddy.co If you are installing PoolBuddy 4G, there is no need for any configuration. After powering on the PoolBuddy unit, wait 5 minutes. Verify PoolBuddy is uploading data, by logging into your account at staging.poolbuddy.co and checking the update status. Note: Do not worry about the values (since no sensors are connected yet). Only proceed onto the next section when PoolBuddy has successfully uploaded data to the dashboard. 2.2 Install sensors For best operation, it is recommended to install the sensors in a bypass flow setup as shown below. Note the recommended u-bend on the pipe where the ORP, Ph and temperature probes are installed, this ensures that the electrode tips are always sittings in water, and not air. This provides accurate readings and longer lasting electrodes. 6

7 Proper flow of water past the sensors is essential for obtaining good readings. To ensure proper water flow, make sure that the bypass line is properly connected. The water input to the bypass flow should be taken from just after the pump. The water returned (out) from the bypass loop should be re-inserted before the pump. Ensure the water flow sensor is setup in the right direction, according to the arrow printed on its side. Based on the current setup of your customers pool, you will have to decide on the required fittings (union pipes, tee-junctions, reducers etc.) and other accessories (glue, tape) that are required to install PoolBuddy. As already discussed we recommend a simple bypass loop be setup. Do not install the sensors to near an elbow or a constriction where there might be excessive turbulence, as this will affect the sensor accuracy. The following diagram shows the fittings that are included with PoolBuddy, that must be installed. 7

8 It is important to note that Poolbuddy will provides the most accurate reading of the pool water quality, when the pump is operating. Failure to run the pump may result in stagnant water being measured, which does not accurately reflect the water in the pool. Also, depending on the pipe setup, air bubbles or vacuums may be present when the pump is not running (or running a backwash cycle). But don t worry, PoolBuddy has the smarts to work all this out to get the optimal reading. Install ph, ORP as per the instructions with their mounting kits. Install temperature sensor thermowell into tee junction fitting. Ensure the thermowell is sitting in the pipe as shown below. 8

10 2.3 Connect sensors to PoolBuddy The ORP sensor has a yellow BNC connector. Connect this to the leftmost BNC connector on PoolBuddy as shown below. The ph sensor has a blue BNC connector. Connect this to the middle BNC connector on PoolBuddy as shown below. The temperature has a black BNC connector. Connect this to the rightmost BNC connector on PoolBuddy as shown below. Connect the waterflow sensor if applicable as shown below. 2.4 Test PoolBuddy Ensure the PoolBuddy sensors are properly installed. Cycle the pump to ensure all is working, and no leaks are occurring around where the sensors have been installed. Cycle the pump a few times, ensuring each cycle lasts at least 5 minutes. Verify that the updates are being received from PoolBuddy in the PoolBuddy app. 10

11 2 PoolBuddy WIFI configuration This section only applies to PoolBuddy models supporting WIFI. If you have a 4G PoolBuddy, this section is not applicable. 2.1 Configure WIFI network PoolBuddy needs to be connected to the home WIFI network of your customer. If the home WIFI coverage does not reach the location where PoolBuddy is installed, with the help of your customer you may install a WIFI extender adapter, to increase the reach of the WIFI. Step 1 Get Access Key Log in to your PoolBuddy account, and go to the pool that has already been setup for this customer. Open the settings menu, and copy the Access Key shown. Paste this Access Key into an , and send it to yourself. You will need to have this access key available on your mobile phone in order to provision the PoolBuddy onto the WIFI network. Do not attempt to manually enter or copy the Access key, it contains to many characters, only copy and paste it. Step 2 Connect your mobile phone to PoolBuddy Power on PoolBuddy unit. Using your mobile phone view the available WIFI networks. You will see a new network called PoolBuddy_AP. Connect to this network using the following password: poolbuddy Step 3 Provide home WIFI details to PoolBuddy Ignore any messages about internet not available Once you have successfully connected to the PoolBuddy WIFI network, open a browser and enter the following URL You will be served with the following web page and asked for the following details. 11

12 You should have ed this to yourself, copy from the and paste here Name of the home network which PoolBuddy will use. Ensure spelt correctly. WIFI network password Step 3 Login to PoolBuddy app PoolBuddy should now be connected to the home network, and uploading measurements to PoolBuddy server.
