1 Open Gates A publication of the Gates Cactus & Succulent Society May 2011 NEXT MEETING, WEDNESDAY, May 4th 7:30 PM AT THE SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY MUSEUM I- 10 AT CALIFORNIA STREET IN REDLANDS, CA. Sweepstakes Winner May 2011 Plants of the Month Stenocactus, Thelocactus, Agave Speaker: Guillermo Rivera Save These Dates: May 7 Nursery Bus Trip May Annual Gates C&SS Show and Sale June 11 Field trip to the Newcomers From the President: May should be busy: the 4th is the meeting, the 7th is the field trip, the 14th is Mother's Day, the 20th and 21st is the GATES CACTUS AND SUCCULENT SHOW AND SALE, and the 30th is Memorial Day. The Show and Sale is our most public function. The more plants on display the better. We ALL should try and exhibit at least one! One plant: one dozen plants: one hundred plants, you get the point. On a more general note, private trips to other cacti related functions are encouraged: there is a list inside. Our Rescue Team is working on the Museum Garden outside. Thanks to all who helped! Try to be early to the meetings, the fellowship might be enjoyable, the conversation pointed, and you won't be stuck outside. How many of you gave up on the weeds? I just found that Bermuda Grass is also a medicine(?)! A traditional use of Cynodon (aka Bermuda grass) is for eye disorders and weak vision; the afflicted are advised to walk bare foot on dew drops spread over Cynodon plant each morning. I guess the reason cows are supposedly so near sighted is that bare hoofed is just not the same. ( Along the same line, I guess we could consider Stenocereus gummusos to be medicinal: if you're coldhearted and insensitive, walk barefoot over this damp plant and you'll definitely feel something. Native peoples in Northern Mexico used to crush the stems and throw them in the mater. The toxic di and tri terpenes in the sap stunned the fish allowing the people to "catch" them by just picking them up. mjg President Mike Green Director Dan Griffith firelab@echinocereus.org Director Tony Marino Vice President Don McGrew Director Rene Hernandez Treasurer From the President Con t. He has become one of the leading experts on South American cacti and succulents. From Argentina, he currently leads exploration trips to various cactus habitats in southern South America. Please Join him for his latest South American Succulent adventure in Patagonia. We don t often think of that area in southern Argentina as a place where succulents proliferate. Join Guillermo for a terrific discussion on the plants that grow there. Visit the Gates Cactus & Succulent Society at Kitchen Duty for May 2011 Ann Reynolds, Kim Urman Thank you! 2011 Roster. Our new Roster has been published. Karen Roholt has your copy. We need your Show Trophies returned. Pleas bring them to the May meeting so I don t have to call you and bug you. Bring plants to donate to the Raffle at the Show & Sale. The money that we earn from this is the bonus money that offsets our costs.

3 Stenocactus, Thelocactus Buck Hemenway These two genera are both North American with some species from Thelocactus occurring in Texas and the majority in Mexico. All of the Stenocacti occur in central Mexico. Most of both genera are smallish plants, but all have large, showy flowers. Stenocactus (the enigmatic Echinofossulocactus now included) tend to be solitary, fairly small globular shaped plants. The genus is small with only 8 species recognized by the New Cactus Lexicon. They admit that the genus is misunderstood, and there may or may not be need to split them further. The genus can be recognized by the body which in all but one case (S. coptonogonus) have many narrow ribs that are wavy. Spines can by very strong (over 1/8 wide) to narrow, but usually have an upward growth pattern that is recognizable. Flowers are usually white to light pink with a mid-stripe. Thelocactus is another small genus of 11 species, but an equal number of subspecies with some 20 recognized forms. T. bicolor is the most popular plant in the trade and has 5 recognized subspecies. About ½ of them are solitary while the other plants are branching at the base to form small clumps. The large flowers range in color from white to yellow to purple. Both genera are fairly easy to grow in the Inland Empire. They will withstand full summer heat and sun, although we find that a little afternoon shade keeps them looking their best. The will withstand some frost, however a hard freeze will kill most of them. The key to their success is very fast drainage. They are all growing in summer rainfall regions and withstand monsoonal conditions. Their habitat tends to be very rocky hillsides, so a very well drained garden spot will do or an extremely light soil mix is required. Thelocactus bicolor Thelocactus setispinus Stenocactus ochoterenanus

4 Agave Buck Hemenway Agave is a large genus of succulents with leaves. They range in size from miniature plants such as A. minibell to giants like A. americana and A. salmiana which have rosettes that are nearly 15 feet across. There are several ways to identify an Agave. 1. Their leaves are always tipped with a terminal spine. Even the soft tipped A. attenuata, has an obvious terminal spine. 2. The leaves are formed in a tightly wrapped bud. There is so much pressure in the bud that those leaves with teeth leave permanent bud imprints on the leaves fronts and backs. 3. Leaves tend to be fairly rigid and grow in rosette form. Agaves are moncarpic which means that they have only one life cycle. No matter how long it takes for the plant to produce it, the bloom stalk is a terminal inflorescence. That means that the plant dies after blooming. The bloom stalk can be produced from 7 years to 40 years of life depending on conditions and the variety of the plant. Agaves grow in the Southwest US and on some Caribbean Islands, south through Mexico. They were an important resource for all peoples who lived on the land throughout history. The extremely fibrous leaves with the very sharp terminal spines have always been used to sew or bind other materials together. Their roots make good soap. They all will produce a fermented beverage that was used throughout their range. We are most used to Tequila which is derived from the Agave tequilana in the state of Jalisco. Some, such as Agave americana, are cold hardy to below zero deg F. Depending on the variety, they tend to offset and form large clumps of plant material. It is important to know which you are planting and how it normally grows. Most will take full sun and heat, as well as cold and are extremely easy to grow. There is no more dramatic landscape plant than a large Agave. It can become the key to an attractive succulent landscape. The inflorescence is truly a wonder of nature. The energy used to create those 25 foot tall trees in just a few weeks is amazing. While most of them will not reproduce from seed naturally in our area, one can only marvel at the tens of thousands of seeds produced by one mother plant. Agave cv. It is by far the most rewarding of the things that we do in the Cactus & Succulent hobby. Have you looked on the internet for ID reference? There are any number of ways to find the name of a plant in your collection. Take a look at Look at the discussion forums there. You can find out a lot about any plant in your collection with little or no trouble. Nothing beats a good book. Take a look at the club s library. It is an excellent reference source to help you understand the plants that you are growing. Is it a Winter Grower, how high does it grow (elevation wise) and how much rainfall is there where it grows? When does it bloom? The answers to all of these questions and more are found in the reference books in your library. Buck 2011 Field Trips/Tours May 7 June 11 Field Trip to California Cactus Center and California Nursery Specialties. Bus trip, the club pays for the bus, you only pay for lunch. 9 Some Dudleya here in the Los Angeles area by Michael Wisnev While Dudleya are not very popular in cultivation, they are one of the few genera of succulent plants that are native to the Los Angeles area, as well as the coastal areas all the way up to Oregon. Thus, they provide a real opportunity to see succulents grow in the field. Dudleya are members of the Crassulaceae family and often look a bit like Echeverias, especially the flowers. They grow predominately in coastal California and Baja, as well as offshore islands. Some grow more inland, including two species in Arizona. However, while most Crassulaceae genera will hybridize freely with other genera, Dudleya don t hybridize with other Crassulaceae. The Illustrated Handbook of Succulent Plants lists 44 species and many subspecies; still it is rare to see anything other than D. pachyphytum, D. pulverulenta, D. brittonii or D. caespitosa at a local show. They are generally winter-growing plants and some can easily perish if watered in summer. Dudleya pulverulenta is no doubt the most spectacular of the local Dudleya. Often shockingly white with a bluish tinge to the newest leaves, they can be as pretty as the somewhat similar looking Dudleya brittonii that grows in Mexico. They can often be seen along local highways, such as the 118 in Simi, or the 15 near Temecula. They typically grow on vertical rock faces, though some grow on flatter grounds. Some are almost 2 feet in diameter. Perhaps the most common local species is D lanceolata. It grows throughout the Santa Monica and San Gabriel mountain ranges. Usually bright to olive green with lanceolate leaves, it sometimes looks quite different, especially when growing out of a rock crevice. Then it can have relatively wide glaucous leaves, and look surprisingly like other Dudleya species. However, when it is flowering it is usually unmistakable with a tall inflorescence and red flowers. A number of subspecies of Dudleya cymosa also grow locally. They are quite common in almost all the San Gabriel mountain valleys, growing on north facing cliffs as most Dudleya do. These have shorter inflorescences and the flowers can vary from yellow to orange to reddish. The most common is D cymosa pumila, though other subspecies are endemic to a nearby few nearby areas. Dudleya are divided into three subgenera. The largest is the Dudleya subgenus it usually has flat leaves, and erect flowers much like Echeveria. In contrast, the Stylophyllum subgenus is characterized by longer terete leaves and recurved (as opposed to erect) petals. Dudleya virens ssp hassei is the most commonly seen of these, even though it grows on coastal islands. Two others, Dudleya viscida and edulis, grow in Orange County near Laguna along the Ortega Highway. Dudleya in the Hasseanthus subgenus are rarely seen, though the HBG sells one, Dudleya nesiotica. It grows on Santa Cruz Island, and some think it may be a hybrid. Hasseanthus are small plants that usually lose all their leaves in summer and are literally impossible to find at that time. Others include Dudleya blochmaniae which grows in the Santa Monica mountains, and Dudleya multicaulis which grows in the Laguna area and other localities. While many say these plants are hard to grow in cultivation, you can take your cues from the local weather. Most simply don t like water in the summer, and often will rot if you do. Let them enjoy the winter rains, and slumber from June to November. For those interested in more pictures, some are posted on the International Crassulaceae Network at in the Dudleya section Dudleya pulverulenta, hiway 395 in Rainbow Dudleya lanceolata local Dudleya
