1 [Jesus said] For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it? Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, saying, This man began to build and was not able to finish. - Luke 14:28-30
2 RENOVATION STATEMENT (SIMILAR TO AN ARTIST STATEMENT) The impetus for The Chapel Renovation project emerged from the various town hall meetings that were held in The initial goals for the Chapel Renovation Project were to: 1. Create a space that encourages collaboration & fellowship 2. Make the best use of the resources and hence, better stewards 3. Create a warm, happy and inviting space for guests and members 4. Improve safety and security in that area What resulted was a complete and utter surprise: the vision blossomed into something even more beautiful and more wonderful; far beyond anything we could have ever imagined. We wanted an open look and feel to the space that would be warm and inviting. The lattice ceiling was removed. We removed two-thirds of the glass barricade of doors between the lobby and the airlock. Then we opened up the wall where the chapel and chapel lobby meet. What a wonderful surprise: the stained glass cross in the chapel reasserted itself as the central focal point on the North Side! Now it stands in parallel importance with the gold cross on the Sanctuary steeple and the wood cross that hangs in our Sanctuary. We wanted the renovation to give proper recognition to all that had gone before us and to connect the past with the present; the old with the new; into a bright and keenly focused future. The next time you re in the area, stand at the brick threshold of the chapel and see how the past and present come together; poised for the future. The chapel is where Cross of Christ first worshiped starting in From this space is the foundation and springboard for becoming the church we are today. When you look at the lobby LED pendant lights, they have a modern, contemporary feel. The color of the bands from the lights tie in with the colors from the stained glass in the chapel as well as the stained glass squares in the lobby area. The minimalist design of the renovation maintains a crisp and clean focus; just as we should be as a church as we move toward the future. Lastly, we wanted to remain true to the earth; grounded in God s gifts of creation. Four key earthly elements hold the design together: glass, wood, steel and stone. Glass envelopes the space, the steel and wood that braces and supports the structure remains exposed and stone walls, pillars and exposed brick echoes God s promise of untiring strength and support. 3 FINISH THE FOUNDATION KEY GOALS 1. Go Green as we Anticipate Capital Needs (now called the Reserve Fund) a. Implement a Building Management System to program use of space & conserve energy b. Replace Aging & Inefficient Furnaces and Air Conditioning Units c. Double the light output for half the cost. Retrofit 80% of our facility lighting with energy efficient LEDs & CFLs, Motion Sensors and Timers 2. Make Immediate Improvements a. Stop hiding our light under a bushel - make the Mega Lights shine on the Steeple again b. Restring the Christmas Tree with warm LED lights 3. Make Modest Improvements a. Renovate the Chapel and Chapel Lobby b. Construct a Media Center (postponed for another time) c. Renovate / Refresh the Church Offices (postponed for another time) KEY STATS 1. Once the energy rebates were received, we had a net investment of $138,000 in our two Energy Efficiency Projects a. $85,000 for the Furnaces, ACs & the Building Management System, and b. $53,000 for Retrofitting the majority of our lighting to Energy Efficient LEDs & CFLs 2. Since December 2014, we ve realized an overall DECREASE in Energy Consumption: a. 54% decrease in gas use, and b. 51% decrease in electrical use 3. We went from a baseline Energy Star Score of 37 in December 2014 to our current score of As of December 2016, our Total Carbon Footprint has DECREASED 72%. 5. Despite rising energy costs and higher than normal seasonal peaks, we ve realized an overall gas and electric cost SAVINGS OF 52% in the first 2 years. We expect to fully realize the return on our financial investment in less than 4 years! BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP OFFICIALS 1. Leo Savoie, Supervisor 2. George Kilpatrick, Building Official 3. Fire Chief Pete Vlahos, Fire Marshall 4. Lt. Ken Kowalski, Fire Dept.
