1 DIVISION 2 ROSE ARRANGEMENTS Holidays Inn Roses ADDITIONAL SHOW RULES By entering this show, given under ARS guidelines, exhibitors agree to abide by these guidelines and rules stated in this schedule. 1. The current rules and procedures of the American Rose Society govern the Arrangement Division of the 2016 North Central District Rose Show. Questions regarding the arrangement schedule should be directed to Sherry Shaft: sashaft1@aol.com 2. All exhibitors must be registered for the convention. The exhibitor s convention registration number will serve as the exhibitor s number and must appear on the entry tag. Although advice may be solicited, all exhibits must be the sole work of the exhibitor; no other person may assemble or alter an exhibitor s entry. Dried designs must have been created for this show, i.e., designs entered in a previous ARS show may be not entered in this show. Challenge classes have additional eligibility requirements as stated in class descriptions. 3. Exhibitors (including arrangement judges) should pre-register all entries by Thursday, September 15th, Bruce Barr, , rosemorehall@att.net. Each exhibitor will be allowed one entry in each class. Pre-registration for the National Pavey Arrangement Class and North Central District Challenge Class is not required. However, it would be appreciated if exhibitors would indicate an intention to enter these classes in order to plan for staging. 4. A rose or roses must provide the dominant floral interest in all designs. All roses must be outdoor garden grown and correctly named on the entry tag. Names may be verified in the latest editions of the following official recognized sources: a. Modern Roses XII Database on ARS Website b. ARS Modern Roses XII c. ARS Official List of Approved Exhibition Names for Exhibitors and Judges d. ARS Handbook for Selecting Roses e. Combined Rose List (CRL) 5. If all roses in the design have been grown by the arranger, AG must be indicated in the upper right-hand corner of the entry tag to be eligible for ARS Medal Certificates and the North Central District Director s Miniflora Arrangement Trophy. 6. Standard designs may contain roses of any classification type. Exhibit tables, 24 inches deep, will be covered with black cloths. Some classes will be staged with black backgrounds. Each arrangement must fit in a 24-inch wide and 24-inch deep space. Exhibitors may provide their own freestanding backgrounds (with/without side wings), frame(s), and/or underlayment as an integral component of the design (subject to width and depth limitations). 7. Miniature designs must use miniature and/or miniflora roses and should be in scale to the size of arrangement. Space allotted for each design will be 12 inches high, 12 inches wide and 12 inches deep. The maximum miniature design height is 10" unless stated otherwise in a particular class. Exhibitors may provide their own freestanding backgrounds (with/without side wings), frame(s) and/or underlayment as an integral component of the design (subject to width and depth limitations). 8. Other design components including fresh plant material, dried and/or treated plant material, bases, frames, freestanding backgrounds, accessories and other man-made materials may be used except where excluded by the class description. One single-sided three-inch x five-inch (3"x5") card of intent may be included. 9. To avoid severe penalty none of the following may be used: painted or dyed fresh plant materials, living creatures, electrical devices, plant materials on the state conservation list, the American flag or flags of any country. 10. To avoid disqualification: NO artificial plant materials (including vegetables and fruits) and roses not outdoor garden grown may be used. 11. Entry tags will be available for exhibitors at the Registration Desk Friday evening as well as the morning of the show. Completion of the tag is the exhibitor s responsibility. Both the top and bottom (tear-off) portion of the entry tag must be completed. Also list roses on the back of the tear off portion of the tag. All rose varieties used in the design must be listed to ensure a complete report of show results. If all rose names will not fit on the entry tag, write see card and provide a separate three inch x five inch (3"x5") card containing the class number and complete list of rose varieties. The exhibitor should use as much of the bold face class title as possible on the entry tag. 12. Exhibitors must use the exhibit space assigned to them. Exhibitors may place arrangement backgrounds Friday evening, September 16 from 6 10 PM. Exhibits may place their arrangements on Saturday, September 17th, from 6:30 AM to 9:45 AM. If an exhibit must be moved, and all efforts to locate the exhibitor have failed, a show chairperson may carefully move the exhibit. 13. An incorrectly placed arrangement will be judged in the section and class in which it is placed. 14. Arrangements awarded the Pavey, District Diretor s Trophy and ARS standard and miniature medal certificates must remain in the showroom until after the banquet except as directed by a show chairman. All other arrangements must be removed from the show room by 5 PM. Exhibitors should label their containers and accessories where it cannot be seen during judging. 15. Arrangement judges who are judging arrangements in this show are invited to enter any class in the Horticultural Division
2 1 and Division 2, Section K, Classes 34 and The following ARS arrangements scorecard will be used Conformance (5 points per category) Roses correctly named Type of design (style) Other requirements (e.g. size, materials) Design (5 points per principle) Balance, dominance, contrast, rhythm, proportion, scale according to design style and type. Perfection of the rose(s) and condition of plant material Creativity and Expressiveness Distinction Unique, sets the design apart, superiority in every respect includes technical execution/construction. Total Possible 15 points 30 points 30 points 15 points 10 points 100 points An arrangement must score at least 90 points to be eligible for a first place ribbon. Only one first, second, third and honorable mention ribbon will be awarded in each class. A design must place first and score at least 92 points to be eligible for ARS high awards or trophies. In addition to the class awards, ribbons and trophies may be awarded as indicated in the schedule. All decisions of the judges are final. 1. The highest blue ribbon design scoring over 92 points in Class 1 will be awarded the North Central District Director s Miniflora Arrangement Trophy. 2. One set of ARS Gold, Silver and Bronze Medal Certificates are awarded for the highest scoring first place standard size designs using fresh arranger grown roses (indicated by AG on the entry tag). Eligible for Medal Certificates: classes 3 through 14, 17 through One set of Miniature ARS Gold, Silver and Bronze Medal Certificates are awarded for the highest scoring first place designs using miniature and/or miniflora roses that are arranger grown roses (indicated by AG on the entry tag). Eligible for Medal Certificates: classes 20 through 30 and 33. DIVISION 2 ROSE ARRANGEMENTS CLASSES Holidays In Roses Section AA ARS NATIONAL TRAVELING ARRANGEMENT TROPHY The Betty Pavey Memorial Rose Arrangement Trophy This section is open only to American Rose Society members registered for the convention. Roses must be correctly named on the entry tag. A minimum of three (3) entries must be received in order for the class to be judged. The winner of this class shall be the highest scoring design over 92 points as judged by each arrangement judge using the American Rose Society scorecard. The scores will be averaged to determine the winner. The winning design is not eligible for the ARS Gold, Silver or Bronze Medal Arrangement Certificates. Class 1: Say It With Roses A synergistic standard rose design using fresh roses composed of three or more separate units to create a unified whole. Unity should be evident in repetition of colors and forms. Reservations for this class are not required. However, your indication of interest would be greatly appreciated by the deadline date. All roses used in this class must be outdoor grown by the arranger. AG must be indicated on the entry tag in order to be considered for the trophy. Section A NORTH CENTRAL DISTRICT ARRANGEMENT CHALLENGE CLASS The North Central District Director s Miniflora Trophy This section is open only to American Rose Society members maintaining membership in a North Central District society/club and registered for the convention. Roses, correctly named on the entry tag, must be fresh garden grown by the arranger. The winner of this class shall be the highest scoring design over 92 points as judged by each arrangement judge using the American Rose Society scorecard. Each design s scores will be averaged to determine the winner. The winning design is not eligible for ARS Gold, Silver or Bronze Medal Arrangement Certificates. Class 2: Mardi Gras Also called Shrove Tuesday (deriving from the word shrive meaning confess ) or Fat Tuesday. All of this refers to the events of the Carnival celebrations that culminate on Ash Wednesday. Mardi Gras means Fat Tuesday, reflecting the practice of the last night of eating richer, fatty foods before the ritual fasting of the Lenten season. A design, depicting the class, using five (5) or more miniflora roses. Roses must be arranger grown. Arranger s choice of design style and AG must be written on the entry tag. Not to exceed 12 inches in height, width or depth.
3 Section B STANDARD TRADITIONAL ARRANGEMENTS ARS Royalty Award. Class 3: Father s Day: We set this day aside on the third Sunday of June to celebrate Fathers. The holiday was started in 1908 in The Williams Memorial Methodist Church South of Fairmont, West Virginia to complement the earlier Mother s Day. A traditional line arrangement using all fresh plant materials. Class 4: Valentine s Day: February 14 th. The day was first associated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished. In 18th-century England, it evolved into an occasion in which lovers expressed their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confections, and sending greeting cards known as "Valentines". A traditional line-mass arrangement using all fresh plant materials. Class 5: National Grandparents Day is a secular holiday celebrated in the United States since 1978 and officially recognized in a number of countries on various days of the year. Marian McQuade of Oak Hill, West Virginia has been recognized as its founder. In February 1977 a resolution was introduced in Congress to make the first Sunday of September after Labor Day National Grandparents Day. A traditional mass arrangement using all fresh plant materials. Section C STANDARD MODERN ARRANGEMENTS ARS Artist s Award. Class 6: Holi is a spring festival, also known as the festival of colors. It is an ancient Hindu religious festival where celebrants chase and color each other with dry powder and colored water. Holi is celebrated at the approach of the vernal equinox. The festival signifies the victory of good over evil, the arrival of spring and the end of winter. A free form design using fresh roses. Plant materials are used in a naturalistic way. It may have more than one center of interest and point of emergence. Class 7: Tax Day is the agreed upon term for April 15 th, the day when our federal tax forms are due. Do you try to stretch out the process? A stretch design using fresh roses. Design should be in two units, one smaller than the other, have a connective(s), which extends between the two units which gives the appearance of a smaller design stretched as if pulling away from the larger portion. Class 8: Black Friday Another commercially conceived holiday that occurs the day after Thanksgiving. Shoppers rush the stores to look for the best deals. Too often it devolves into mayhem. It is a free-for-all in the stores. A modern horizontal design, either modern line or modern line mass. Section D STANDARD ARRANGEMENTS IN THE ORIENTAL MANNER ARS Oriental Award. Class 9: Songkran is the traditional New Year celebration in Thailand and several Southeast Asian countries. It coincides with the sun crossing the constellation Aries, from April 13 to 15. Songkran translates as transformation or change. This holiday is known for its water festival. Major streets are closed and used for water fights. An arrangement using fresh roses in the Oriental manner using one or more low to medium containers showing water. Class 10: Tanabata meaning the evening of the seventh is also known as the Star Festival in Japan. It was introduced to Japan in 755 and is celebrated on July 7 th. It originated from a Chinese folk legend concerning two stars-the Weaver Star (Vega) and the Cowherd Star (Altair)-who were said to be lovers who could meet only once a year on the 7th night of the 7th month provided it didn't rain and flood the Milky Way. An arrangement using fresh roses in the Oriental manner using one or more medium to tall containers. Class 11: Chinese New Year is celebrated at the turn of the lunar calendar, between January 21 st and February 20 th. Traditionally it is a time to honor deities and ancestors. We often associate the color red and firecrackers with this holiday based on the myth that villagers would try to frighten the mythical beast Nian away from their villages. 4 Section E SPECIAL CLASSES OF ARRANGEMENTS All classes except 15 and 16 are eligible for ARS Gold, Silver and Bronze Medal Arrangement Certificates for entries marked AG. Blue ribbon entries are eligible for ARS Rosettes appropriate to style or design. If arranger grown, AG should be indicated on the entry tag. Class 12: Flag Day is celebrated on June 14 th, commemorating the adoption of the Stars and Stripes as our national flag in The celebration of Flag Day was officially established in However, in tiny Waubeka, Wisconsin, Bernard Cigrand, a grade school teacher, held the first annual observance of Flag Day at Stony Hill School in The school has been restored and honors both Cigrand and Flag Day. Eligible for ARS Duchess Award and ARS Medal Certificates. A standard arrangement, using only fresh roses with dried and/or treated plant material. No other fresh plant materials or accessories are permitted. Arranger s choice of design style (traditional line-mass, modern abstract or Oriental freestyle, etc.) must be written on entry tag. Class 13: May Day May, 1 st, is known not only for May pole dances and small floral baskets hung on doorknobs, but also for the International Workers Day to commemorate the Haymarket massacre in Chicago. Eligible for ARS Princess Award and ARS Medal Certificates. A standard arrangement using fresh roses and any other parts of the rose bush, i.e. hips, canes (with or without foliage) and roots. No other plant materials or accessories are permitted. Arranger s choice of design style (traditional line-mass, modern abstract or Oriental freestyle, etc.) must be written on entry tag. Class 14: Passover is celebrated by Jewish people as a commemoration of their liberation by God from slavery in Egypt and their freedom as a nation under the leadership of Moses. The Passover Seder is a major part of this celebration. Each component of the meal is rich in significance. Questions are asked by the children present at the meal as a way to discuss the significance of the gathering. Eligible for ARS Duke Award and ARS Medal Certificates. Fresh roses any classification type with or without other fresh and/or dried plant material. This class is restricted to arrangements larger than 10 inches in height, width or depth but must not exceed 20 inches in height, width or depth. Arranger s choice of design style (traditional line mass, modern abstract or Oriental freestyle, etc.) must be written on entry tag. No accessories are permitted. Class 15: Rosh Hashanah literally means head of the year. This is a two-day celebration and has its origin in the beginning of the economic year marking the start of the agricultural cycle. Rosh Hashanah customs include the sounding of the shofar and eating symbolic foods such as apples dipped in honey to evoke a sweet new year. Eligible for ARS Keepsake Award. (Not eligible for Medal Certificates.) A standard arrangement of dried roses with other dried plant material. Arranger s choice of design style (traditional line mass, modern abstract or Oriental freestyle, etc.) must be written on entry tag. Accessories are permitted. Class 16: Yom Kippur is the Day of Atonement, the holiest day of the year in Judaism. Its central tents are atonement and repentance. It is traditionally observed with a 25-hour period of fasting and intensive prayer. Eligible for ARS Rosecraft Award. (Not eligible for Medal Certificates.) A standard rosecraft picture, wreath, wall hanging, door hanging, plaque or other decorative item. Entries to be staged as desired on the tabletop. All entries in this section must use dried roses and other dried and/or treated (preserved) plant materials, cones, pods, etc. No fresh plant material permitted. Table tripods, frames or other apparatus for staging to be furnished by the exhibitor. Class 17: New Year s Day is observed on the first day of year on the modern Gregorian calendar. January 1 st is probably the most celebrated public holiday. Large gatherings, fireworks, toasts, resolutions, polar bear plunges all are observed on this day from the first stroke of midnight and throughout the day. Eligible for ARS Court of Etiquette Award and ARS Medal Certificates. A functional informal table display to include a standard design using fresh roses. Accessories optional. Flatware not permitted. Display to be placed with tabletop space of 30 inches wide x 24 inches deep. Arranger s choice of design style (traditional line-mass, modern abstract or Oriental freestyle, etc.) must be written on entry tag. Section F NOVICE/JUNIOR ARRANGEMENTS Eligible for ARS Gold, Silver and Bronze Medal Arrangement Certificates for entries marked AG. Eligible for ARS Novice Certificate and/or ARS Junior Arrangement Award. NOVICE: An exhibitor who has never won an ARS arrangement award in an arrangement section of an ARS rose show. A first place ribbon is not considered an award. JUNIOR: Exhibitors 17 years of age or younger.
5 Class 18: Halloween All Hallow s Eve is observed on October 31 st. Its origins are seen in the ancient Gaelic Samhain. Trickor-treat, costume parties and telling scary stories occur around eerily lit jack o lanterns. Did you know that in Ireland and Scotland the turnip is traditionally carved instead of a pumpkin? A standard arrangement using fresh roses. Accessories permitted. Arranger s choice of design style (traditional linemass, modern abstract or Oriental freestyle, etc.) must be written on entry tag. Class 19: Christmas December 25 th, a day of trees, lights and presents; of families gathered together and church services to celebrate the birth of Jesus. Stockings are hung by the chimney with care in hopes that St. Nicholas soon will be there. An arrangement not to exceed 10 inches in height, width or depth using fresh miniature and/or miniflora roses. Arranger s choice of design style (traditional line-mass, modern abstract or Oriental freestyle, etc.) must be written on entry tag. Section G MINIATURE TRADITIONAL ARRANGEMENTS Eligible for Miniature ARS Gold, Silver and Bronze Medal Arrangement Certificates for entries marked AG. Best of section eligible for ARS Mini Royalty Award. Only fresh miniature and/or miniflora roses are to be used. Class 20: Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States for remembering the people who died while serving in the country s armed forces. The holiday which is observed on the last Monday of May, originated as Decoration Day after the Civil War in 1868, when the Grand Army of the Republic established it as a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the war dead with flowers. A traditional line arrangement not to exceed 8 inches in height, width or depth. Class 21: Presidents Day is typically meant to celebrate the lives and achievement of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, both of whom have February birthdays. Now it is more of a day of specials sales in the retail businesses. Attempts were made beginning in 1951 to use this day to honor the office of the president rather than one or two individuals. A traditional line-mass arrangement not to exceed 10 inches in height, width or depth. Class 22: Mother s Day was first celebrated in 1908 when Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother, a peace activist who cared for soldiers on both sides of the Civil War, at St Andrew s Methodist Church in Grafton, W. Va. Her intent was to have people honor their mothers through personalized notes and letters, written by hand. Anne was incensed when the holiday became a matter of profit for Hallmark and other retailers. She even tried to rescind the holiday. A traditional mass arrangement not to exceed 8 inches in height, width or depth. Section H MINIATURE MODERN ARRANGEMENTS Eligible for Miniature ARS Gold, Silver and Bronze Medal Arrangement Certificates for entries marked AG. Best of section eligible for ARS Mini Artist Award. Only fresh miniature and/or miniflora roses are to be used. Class 23: Groundhog Day It s February 2 nd, the groundhog emerges. Will he see his shadow? If he does and makes a beeline to his burrow, it is supposed to mean six more weeks of winter. If he does not, spring will come early. While Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania is widely recognized as the true home of Groundhog Day, many other communities have their own groundhogs that prognosticate the weather. A modern line design not to exceed 10 inches in height, width or depth. Class 24: Basanth Panchami Students in India pay homage to the goddess of knowledge, Saraswati, the goddess of intelligence, wisdom and knowledge of all arts, science, music and dancing. This is a time to celebrate since it falls at a time when the summer heat is over, the cold winds of winter have not arrived, and the skies are free from rain. This is the flowering season of mustard. People put on yellow garments. They cook yellow rice. A free form design incorporating irregular designs with a curving outline. Plant materials are used in a naturalistic way. There may be more than one center of interest and more than one point of emergence. Class 25: Columbus Day October 12 th is recognized as the date when Columbus arrived in the Americas with his three ships: the Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria. Columbus day first became an official state holiday in Colorado in 1906 and a federal holiday in A synergistic design not to exceed 12 inches using fresh roses composed of three or more separate units created a unified whole. Unity is evident in repetition of colors and forms. Section I MINIATURE ORIENTAL MANNER ARRANGEMENTS ARS Mini Oriental Award.
6 Only fresh miniature and/or miniflora roses are to be used. Class 26: Obon is observed in Japan on the 13 th to the 15 th day of July (August in some areas of Japan) and is an event to commemorate one s ancestors. It is believed that each year during obon, the ancestors spirits return to this world in order to visit their relatives. Traditionally lanterns are hung to guide the ancestors, dances are performed, graves are visited and food offerings are made. It is a time for travel throughout Japan, so transportation and hotel rates are typically sky high. An arrangement in the Oriental manner using one or more low to medium height containers or compote showing water. Not to exceed 8 inches in height, width or depth. Class 27: Midori no hi is known as Greenery Day in Japan. It is now celebrated on May 4th and is a time when trees are planted to honor nature. Parks and gardens all around Japan often hold events to celebrate everything green. An arrangement in the Oriental manner using one or more medium to tall containers. Not to exceed 10 inches in height, width or depth. Class 28: Hinamatsuri is knows as Doll s Day or Girl s Day in Japan and is celebrated on March 3 rd. Platforms are erected, covered in red carpet, on which are displayed ornamental dolls representing the Emperor, Empress, attendants and musicians, all in traditional court dress. Dolls first begin appearing in February and are taken down immediately after the festival. Superstition says that leaving the dolls past March 4 will result in a late marriage for the daughter. An arrangement in the Oriental freestyle manner using one or more containers. Not to exceed 6 inches in height, width or depth. Section J SPECIAL MINIATURE ARRANGEMENTS All classes except 31 and 32 are eligible for ARS Gold, Silver and Bronze Medal Miniature Arrangement Certificates for entries marked AG. Blue ribbon entries are eligible for ARS Miniature Rosettes appropriate to style or design. Only miniature and/or miniflora roses are to be used. Class 29: Eid al-fitr is the festival of breaking fast, an important religious holiday celebrated by Muslims worldwide. It marks the end of Ramadan, the holy month of fasting. Celebrations last for two or three days. Muslims are encouraged to forgive and forget any differences with others or animosities that may have occurred during the previous year. Eligible for ARS Mini Duchess Award. An arrangement using only fresh mini and/or miniflora roses with dried and/or treated plant material. No other fresh plant materials or accessories are permitted. Arranger s choice of design style (traditional line-mass, modern abstract or Oriental freestyle etc.) must be written on entry tag. Not to exceed 10 inches in height, width or depth. Class 30: St. Patrick s Day March 17 th is the day when everyone gets to be Irish! Break out your shamrocks, the green beer and dance a jig. If you can make it to Chicago, you will see the Chicago River go green on this day. Eligible for ARS Mini Princess Award An arrangement using fresh miniature and/or miniflora roses and any other parts of the rose bush; i.e. hips, canes (with or without fresh foliage) and roots. No other plant materials and accessories are permitted. Arranger s choice of design style (traditional line-mass, modern abstract or Oriental freestyle, etc.) must be written on entry tag. Not to exceed 10 inches in height, width or depth. Class 31 Thanksgiving Think Pilgrims, turkey and feeling way too full. While tradition has it the Pilgrims invited the First Peoples to partake in a meal of thanksgiving the second year they were in America, the actual holiday was not instituted as a federal holiday until 1863 when President Lincoln issued a proclamation naming the last Thursday of November a day of Thanksgiving. Eligible for ARS Miniature Keepsake Award. (Not eligible for Medal Certificates.) An arrangement using dried miniature or miniflora roses with other dried plant material. Arranger s choice of design style (traditional line-mass, modern abstract or Oriental freestyle, etc.) must be written on entry tag. Not to exceed 10 inches in height, width or depth. Class 32: Cinco de Mayo The fifth of May commemorates the Mexican Army s unlikely victory over the more powerful French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, Many Americans think of this as Mexican Independence Day that is actually celebrated on September 16 th. Eligible for ARS Miniature Rosecraft Award. (Not eligible for Medal Certificates.) All entries in this section must use dried roses and other dried and/or treated (preserved) plant materials, cones, pods, etc. No fresh plant material permitted. Table tripods, frames or other apparatus for staging to be furnished by the exhibitor. Class 33: Kwanzaa This weeklong celebration honors African heritage in African-American culture. Between December 26 and January 1, seven core principles are included: Unity, Self-determination, Collective Work and Responsibility, Cooperative Economics, Purpose, Creativity and Faith. This holiday is the first specifically African-American holiday and was instituted in
7 1965 by Maulana Karenga. Eligible for Miniature Court of Etiquette Award. An informal exhibition table display suggestive of casual dining set in an 18-inch space. Display to include a place setting for one and an arrangement using fresh miniature and/or miniflora roses. Design not to exceed 10 inches in height, width or depth. Flatware not permitted. Arranger s choice of design style (traditional line-mass, modern abstract or Oriental freestyle, etc.) must be written on entry tag. Section K JUDGES ARRANGEMENTS This section is open to accredited and apprentice ARS Arrangement Judges who are judging in the arrangement division of this show and their families. Eligible for the ARS Judges Certificate Award. Class 34: Day of the Dead Dia de los Muertos is a Mexican holiday that focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died. Originally this holiday took place at the beginning of summer, but has been moved to the end of October to coincide with Halloween. Typically, small figurines are constructed on private altars within the household. A standard arrangement using fresh roses.
