2016 ARS All Miniature National Convention ARRANGEMENT SHOW SCHEDULE Wandering through Pennsylvania Many of you have visited our fair commonwealth in the past. But on this visit we hope you will be able to take more time and actually wander through Ben Franklin s Commonwealth. Given to Benjamin Franklin as part of the original 13 states, Pennsylvania is the site of the first American Capital, the American Continental Congress and the American Rose Society. It s all here, if you want to take the time to come, stay and enjoy your national history and legacy, this is an incredible piece of landscape. Penn s Woods, which is the translation of Pennsylvania, is a combination of beaches, mountains, nature preserves, waterfalls, history, tragedy, heroism beyond belief, the first home of the American Rose Society and of course the site of many world famous gardens found in our 114 state parks and 12 heritage areas. Bordering the state on every side are even more points of historical, floral and national historical interests. This visit, please come, and hopefully you will be blessed with the time to truly wander through our wonderful commonwealth. Wander with us through a few of Penn s Woods Vistas and Glorious Past.

ARS NATIONAL MINIATURE CHALLENGE CLASSES It s not only about the woods and mountains. Pennsylvanians also look to the skies. There are those who love the beauty of the sky but are sometimes foiled by the pollution of civilization s man-created lights. The serious stargazers benefit from the preservation of part of Pennsylvania land which is devoted to the admiration and discovery of the magnificent night sky. If camping is not your thing, there are lodges and cabins to rent and still enjoy the quiet awe of the now visible star-filled sky sans light pollution. Cherry Springs State Park is located in the northern, most central part of the commonwealth in Potter County. The latitude of 41 degrees North of this park gives an impressive vista of the northern sky. Modern accommodations can be found in the closest town of Coudersport, off of Route 44 (the Old Jersey Shore Turnpike and Route 6, the Grand Army of the Republic Highway.) ARS National J. Benjamin Williams Miniflora Arrangement Trophy Class 1 The Night Sky A modern arrangement using only arranger grown Miniflora roses, depicting the majesty and awe of the star filled sky. Background support and staging area is 14 in height width, and depth. The dimensions of the arrangement may be as large as 12 in height, width, or depth. Exhibitors desiring to enter this class need not make a formal registration for space, but notification of a potential exhibit will greatly assist the staging of the show. Open only to current ARS members who are registered for the convention. AG, acknowledging that all roses used in the arrangement are arranger grown, must be acknowledged on the entry tag.

ARS National District Directors Miniflora Arrangement Trophy From the massiveness of the sky, to the intimacy of a Pennsylvania stream, one can also go into the woods and view the creative genius of Frank Lloyd Wright, right here in PA. Most think of his Prairie architecture, with its long, low lines; but in southwestern Pennsylvania, in the town of Mill Run, the design is considered more organic, blending into the multidimensional woodland, rocky stream setting. It is truly executed to demonstrate a wonderful harmony of nature. Designed as the home for the Kauffman family it is now owned by the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy and is able to be visited and toured along with its gardens and café. Class 2 Falling Waters A modern arrangement using only miniflora arranger grown roses. Design to express the combination of the uniqueness and the newness of this 1935 design in a construction that is Falling Waters. Background support and staging area is 14 in height width, and depth. Arrangement limited in size to 12 in height, width, or depth.

ARS National Ralph S. Moore Arrangement Trophy The uniqueness of the commonwealth can also be appreciated by the diverse amount of micro climates, included in this list are the mountains to the east of the Atlantic known as the Alleghenies. For many, this was the first big push from the east to the great west. And the 1725 method of transportation for this migration was the world famous Conestoga wagon. Many think of this as a covered wagon, but indeed it was truly a unique construction, manufactured in Lancaster County. Its design was unique in that it was specific for the transportation of heavy goods up and over the Alleghenies. Class 3 Pushing West A traditional arrangement using only arranger grown miniature roses, to express the winding trail taken by the oxen drawn Conestoga wagon, carrying all that was important to the pioneer families as they headed west through the Pennsylvania mountains to the great unknown. Arrangement limited in size to 10 in height, width, or depth. Style to be identified on the supplied supplemental card. Exhibitors desiring to enter this class need not give formal request for space, but notification of a potential exhibit will greatly assist the staging of the show. Open only to current ARS members who are registered for the convention. AG, acknowledging that all roses used in the arrangement are arranger grown, must be acknowledged on the entry tag.

MINIATURE/MINIFLORA TRADITIONAL ARRANGEMENTS Arrangements in Classes 4, 5, and 6 are eligible for the ARS Miniature Royalty Award along with the Gold, Silver or Bronze Miniature Arranger Certificate. To be eligible for the Certificates, AG, indicating that only arranger grown roses were used in the design, must be noted on the entry ticket. For those traveling down Interstate 81 from the North, you don t have to go far into Pennsylvania to appreciate the magnificence of the Pocono Mountains. The Poconos have been known for years as the summer retreat for the big city folks from New York, Washington, Philadelphia and Baltimore. Today s retreats have turned into year round honeymoon resorts and are frequently featured in numerous Brides magazines. Tucked into all of those mountain peaks and valleys are more than 150 lakes. Besides the expected usual summer activities, the Poconos now are the site of more modern entertainment which includes the waterpark of the Great Wolf resort and the Pocono Superspeedway Racetrack known as the Tricky Triangle. Many think of the Poconos as just mountains to hike in, lots of green trees, and streams. But the truth is that in the spring, the woods are alive with color. Between the native redbud trees, native azaleas, rhododendrons and PA s state flower, the Mountain Laurel, the forests are converted into great swaths of beautiful pink, purple and white which creates a ribbon of delicate color flowing through the mountain woods and paths. Class 4 The Honeymoon Suite Long a honeymoon destination, many of the hotels boast of such amenities as heart shaped beds, tubs and saunas and rose petals on the beds. Going to the Poconos was a romantic excursion. A traditional design of arrangement s choice, expressing the mood of love. Arrangement not to exceed 8 in height, width, or depth. Design style to be identified on the supplied supplemental card. Class 5 Poconos Downs THE Nascar racetrack in Pennsylvania; many famous drivers have spent weekends tearing down the uniquely triangular track. A traditional line or line mass arrangement expressing movement. Arrangement not to exceed 10 in height, width, or depth. Design style to be identified on the supplied supplemental card. Class 6 Penn s Woods Penn s Woods with color. A traditional line or line mass arrangement envisioning Penn s woods in the spring. Arrangement not to exceed 10 in height, width, or depth. Design Style to be identified on the supplied supplemental card.

To be eligible for the Certificates, AG, indicating that only arranger grown roses were used in the design, must be noted on the entry ticket. Coming from the West, one first sees the strength of our cities in the second largest city in PA Pittsburgh. Home to some of the most formidable sports teams, it also gets its history from the strength of the people who worked the steel mills which were the skeletons which created America s network of transportation and the construction of the most impressive buildings and bridges in the world. We finally come to the Eastern metropolitan area of Philadelphia. Boasting its art museums, Annual Philadelphia Floral Show and History, the Liberty bell and Constitution Hall, all are part of our nation s first Capital. Flanking this history on all sides are some of the great gardens of the nation. To the north, we have the Morris Arboretum, with tall stately trees flanking the expansive garden. It is repose for the mind to walk through the woods while also smelling the roses. Another rose garden of renown is Longwood. It is located in Kennett Square, south west of Philadelphia. Created by Pierre DuPont, the famous water lily gardens create the quiet, serene foundation often reflective of a giant moribana arrangement. Arrangements in Class 19 are eligible for the ARS Rosecraft Certificate. Keepsake and Rosecraft arrangements are a way to say we remember as we take the creations of the past and preserve them. In Pennsylvania, one of our most treasured memories and sites to be visited is the Historic Gettysburg. Preserved in this piece of Penn s Woods are found many of the original buildings and landscape that became the final resting place of so many Americans. Gettysburg is one of the most significant sites in the War Between the States. And the Gettysburg Address, one of the most eloquent testimonies to the struggle. This is our History and we always say we should learn from it. Traveling in the past meant that one only had a few things that you could take with you as you traveled to a new home. Items had to be purposeful in order to be eligible to use any of the valuable space on the wagon. Sometimes it was a treasure that you just couldn t part with. The early pioneer would carefully preserve everything for future needs and enjoyment. Class 18 Gettysburg Take a line from the Gettysburg Address and interpret it in a dried rose arrangement. A miniature arrangement of dried Miniature and/or Miniflora roses with other dried flowers and plant materials. Roses must be the predominate flower. Dried branches and/or wood may be used in the design. Arranger s choice of design. Arrangement not to exceed 10 in height, width, or depth. Style to be identified on the supplied supplemental card. Class 19 Created for Usefulness and Beauty A dried, crafted, reflection of the 1700s. Simplicity need not mean boredom. Be reflective and creative, using the simple things we have, create an object of beauty with something that would have been used in the 1700s and adorn the memory with dried roses. Take the treasure and decorate it with roses. A craft decorated with dried roses not to exceed 10 in height, width, or depth.
