5 photo: Nazar Leskiw photo: Wojtek Gurak National Library Victoria Street TR Hamzah Yeang design intention was to provide the National Library Board with a state-of-the-art and innovative library in the tropics that serves as an icon for the region and locality It is a cultural facility and a unique and enjoyable civic place for The NLB building consists of two blocks that are separated by a day-lit internal street and connected by bridges at the upper levels The rectangular, larger block contains the collections and the curved, smaller block contains the noisier, public activities (exhibition, auditorium, multi-media) At the heart of the scheme is the open-to-the-sky naturally ventilated Public Events Plaza This is a communal space that becomes the main focal point of the site and subsequently leading one into the main foyer and library proper This public space is further animated with a café, a library shop and possible retail areas The axis of the street links two important streets and also exemplifies the St Joseph m² TR Hamzah Yeang architects National Library Board Mon-Sun: 800am pm Closed at 500pm on eves of Christmas, New Year and Chinese New Year Closed on Public Holidays Take East-West Line, Alight at Bugis, exit Victoria Street 5

6 photo: Suzanne Tol photo: Suzanne Tol Iluma Victoria Street Iluma is located in the Bugis district, a designated entertainment district in The ten-story entertainment complex is designed to appeal to a broad spectrum of society, both local and foreign This large urban object will invigorate the city with an interactive media façade Together with Realities:United from Germany WOHA composed a façade of faceted jewel-like fixtures that glitter in the day and glow in the night The façade is stacked as undulating strips that overlap and recede to create gardens and terraces overhanging the street The media façade will be a canvas for media artists to display their works, enabling creatives and even the public to make city-scaled interventions in light and sound The building design contrasts a rectilinear mass against a curved one The rectilinear red block accommodates large, regular components like car park (325 parking lots), retail anchor tenants, cinema and performance spaces m² Lighting designer realities:united 1000 am-1000 pm East West MRT, alight at Bugis station, exit Bugis Junction/ Victoria Street 6

7 The Church of St Mary of the Angels Bukit Batok East Avenue The Church of St Mary of the Angels is a religious and institutional complex The project includes the Church, the St Anthony Friary, the Poor Clare Monastery and an extensive columbarium WOHA developed a diagram where the existing buildings and new buildings would all connect to a central community space that would form the heart of the complex The spaces that in colder climates are inside traditional buildings were here developed as semi-outdoor spaces The narthex, or traditional entrance hall, instead becomes the semi-covered central space, sheltered by a 10m-cantilevered roof Rather than all the elements being in a single building, this central space allowed various elements - the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament, the work sacristy, vesting sacristy and restrooms to be placed in separate buildings linked by covered walkways m², Interior architect, Landscape architect Church of St Mary of the Angels 630 am-730 pm Take MRT to Bukit Batok Station Take bus 61 or 852 at bus interchange Alight at 3rd bus stop Take stairs up to the church 7

8 Assyafaah Mosque Admiralty Lane The design of this mosque adapted traditional elements to create contemporary versions of the arch, the minaret and the arabesque The eight fair face concrete arches are three-dimensional and provide a free-span prayer space by transferring the load of the upper three levels The minaret is designed as a sculpture held together by overlapping 25mm curved steel plates The arabesque appears on the gates, fencing and custom-designed carpet The prayer hall is oriented towards the kiblat This orientation is accentuated by parallel vertical planes, which house functions moving inward from the secular to the sacred The Mihrab wall is a three-storey high canted structure to create sense of admiration It is lit by diffused light through a slit-skylight The hall is flanked by arabesque screens to allow natural ventilation whilst diffusing direct light from the external Including the extended prayer areas, the mosque can accommodate up to 4000 people m², Interior architect Forum s Majlis Ugama Islam Singapura daily from 600 am-600 pm Northe South MRT alight at Sembawang and walk Or take bus : 856,

9 photo: Patrick Bingham photo: WOHA Bras Basah MRT Station Bras Basah Road Bras Basah MRT subway station is an underground train station in the heart of the historic Civic District in With a single strategy, the design resolves two conflicting requirements - the very deep station required a visual connection to the exterior to enhance the travel experience for the commuters; while the historic district and park location required a station that disappeared into the landscape The strategy developed was to create a station roof that doubles up as a skylight and landscape element - a water filled glass skylight Viewed from the park, it is a reflection pool, from the station platform, it is an immense skylight photo: Patrick Bingham m² Marina Line ural Design Competition nathanchoe Metro rail station, open whenever train services on the circle line are running Take the circle line to Bras Basah station, or most buses along the orchard/bras basah/city hall corridor 9

10 photo: WOHA School of the Arts Zubir Said Drive The design strategy is to create two visually connected horizontal strata, a space for public communication below, and a space for safe, controlled interaction above This simple, bold strategy solves the twin objectives of porosity and communication with the public and wider arts community on the one hand, and a secure and safe learning environment on the other The two parts are called the Backdrop and the Blank Canvas The backdrop is the podium that contains a concert hall, drama theatre, black box theatre and several small informal performing spaces It is envisioned as a heavy pedestal, a gargantuan mass of stone which has been carved out and chiselled to reveal volumes in various proportions This exciting multi level space will be open to public as a tropical urban plaza, covered yet breezy Stairs and platforms create a diverse set of spaces where spontaneous and planned performances can occur photo: WOHA m² School of the Arts nathanchoe Following the design strategy, the podium level is open to the public & the upper levels are private Near Dhoby Ghaut MRT Interchange, also accessible by Orchard Road buses 10
