4 Page 2 - SEPT 2013 LANDGOEDNUUS : ESTATE NEWS Slowly, but surely: A bridge over troubled waters NEW BRIDGES: Rain kept it in the doldrums during the past winter, but the construction of the two new bridges over the Soet River at a cost of R is progressing and should be completed at the beginning of December, in time for the holiday season and the annual Golf Day on December 7. The fairway and greens on the #3 and #4 holes will remain closed until then. Despite the weather most of the preliminary concrete work has been done and the steel structures were nearing aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaacompletion in Paarl. Builder of Greenways golf course to move to Natal South Coast FRED ROEBUCK, former long-time Greenways resident and maintenance contractor, and his wife Jenny, who ran a garden service at Greenways and elsewhere in die Helderberg area for many years, are to become Natalians. They resided in Gleneagles Close, Greenways from 1993 until 2006, before selling their house and moving to Somerset West. They will be retiring to Park Rynie, north of Scottburgh on the Kwa-Zulu Natal South coast, where they have bought a seaside home, in November and plan to establish a B&B to keep them busy. Jenny has already sold her garden s e r v i c e business to a l o c a l businessman, CJ Opperman. He can be Jenny & Fred Roebuck contacted Up to the present she used to do some 80 gardens weekly at Greenways. The same team will continue to do the work in Greenways. Fred designed and built the golf course at Greenways on the foundations of the old Strand golf course and was the garden and maintenance contractor until 2005 when the contract was awarded to Servest Turf. New R178 million sea-wall in Beach Road will also boost property values at Greenways THE LONG overdue restoration and updating of the Strand s beachfront is to commence in 2014 with the construction of a new seawall from the Lourens River up to Greenways. It will be constructed in stages over the next three years at a cost of R178 million. Although omitted from this protection measure and kept responsible for its own coastal safety, the announcement by the Cape Town Metro Council also pleased G r e e n w a y s resi dents. Thei r fortunes are closely linked to that of the Strand in particular and the greater at Helderberg area in general. The Strand needed a f acelif t and improvement of its popular seafront will certainly enhance property values of which Greenways will also benefit. The old wall that withstood the sea for more than 80 years crumbled away during the past few years and could no longer keep high tides in check. Beach Road had to be closed recently when it was completely flooded. Meanwhile the outcome of the central government s court action against the Cape Town Metro Council, with regard to the earlier laying of large rocks to protect a section of Beach Road near Greenways without proper consultation and permission, is still awaited. In view of the new seawall, judgment may require the Council to remove the rocks. The new wall will be broader and a meter higher than the old one. FLATS AT THE EDGE OF THE SEA: This description was very apt when the spring tide arrived on the 19th September at the same time as a full moon and howling wind. The photograph depicts a view of Beach Road, Strand taken from the balcony of one of the sea-facing flats. No pavements, retaining wall or even speed humps are visible and the central islands can only be detected if one is aware of their existence. The road was closed to traffic for several hours.

6 Page 4 - SEPT 2013 KOMMENTAAR : COMMENT G REENWAYS N EWS BUILDING OUR COMMUNITY Y The value (and default) of criticism As far as criticism is concerned, we don t resent that unless it is absolutely biased, as it is in most cases John Vorster, Prime Minister of South Africa JOHN VORSTER uttered these words during a dangerous stage in the past, stormy history of South Africa. While the country s security was at stake his government was under constant pressure and vicious attacks by the liberal, leftwing English press for its oppressive, racist laws. They saw no merit in the government s policy of separate development and were bent on destroying it. Hardly a day went by when it was not severely criticized. Dismayed, but conscious of the importance of a free, independent press, the government endured it. It remains to be seen whether the consequences of that relentless crusade was in the best interests of South Africa. History will be the ultimate judge. To be learnt from it, is that criticism is not only vital in a free, democratic society, but of necessity - provided that people that allow themselves the luxury of criticism (mostly from luxury chairs!) at the same time come forward with a positive contribution or an alternative to alleviate or solve problems for the better. This principle is also applicable to Greenways. It is an unfortunate fact that most of its smug residents and owners are quick to criticize, but slow in helping to get the job done or become involved in its affairs because of the time and effort it requires. They leave it to others who are willing and able to do the work This also applies to Greenways News. It has been under regular, sometimes biased criticism by people who can probably run a bath, but not actually a newspaper and who seldom come forward with a positive contribution. As naive, uninformed lovers of unreal, sunshine journalism they even regard it as hostile and a follower of unwanted sensation. Which is, of course, utter nonsense. Now in its ninth year of publication with an excellent service record the unhappy result is an uncertain future for a valuable tool in communication, community building, knowledge and entertainment. John Vorster, who never lacked a sense of humour, also said: If the English press is your friend, you don t need enemies. Greenways News is not your enemy. It s your friend even when criticized (which it does not resent) or when it criticizes. Treat it as one. Jan van R i ebeeck, al du s ʼn A N C - parlementslid, verantwoordelik was. Hoekom moet Greenways se eienaars betaal om die duine te beskerm terwyl dit munisipale eiendom is? 7 News / Nuus TRAVEL : REIS SEPT Page 5 The old world charm and splendour of historic Kersefontein K ERSEFONTEIN is one of the oldest farms not only in the Western Cape, but indeed in South Africa. Established in 1744 it c a m e i n t o t h e possession of the wellknown, prestigious, old Cape Melck family in Its present owner, 57 year old bachelor Julian, is the eighth generation to continue the legacy of an old world lifestyle of rural charm and splendour now rarely seen. The splendid, rambling Cape Dutch mansion, a declared National Heritage site, in which he grew up, is full of beautiful antic furniture, valuable paintings, pictures and family heirlooms brought together by his forbearers over two and a half centuries. Among the many famous people who were regular guests at Kersefontein in bygone days was the seventeenth century English colonial Governor at the Cape, Lord Charles Somerset. He used to hunt there. An ardent equestrian who loved riding, he often travelled the 140 km from Cape Town to Kersefontein on horseback, using four remounts at various stages of the journey. Apart from being a full-time farmer on hectares of pristine sandveld that originally stretched for 80 km up to Elandsbaai on the West Coast, carrying Hereford cattle and Dohne Merino sheep, Julian is also a qualified advocate of the High Court of South Africa, a world traveller, an accomplished organist with a licentiate from London s Royal School of Music, an aviator, hunter, horseman, collector of books and DINING IN STYLE: The elaborate dining room in the 17th century Cape Dutch homestead at Kersefontein. A man for all seasons if ever there was one. But an unpretentious, earthly one. He drives not a flashy car, but an old bakkie, wears jeans and not a black tie outfit at dinner, does not own a TV set, reads n e w s p a p e r s a n d magazines and shy s away from a cellphone, i-pad and computer. Although brought up in English (his mother hailed from Britain) he speaks Afrikaans fluently, calling himself an ordinary boer with a passion for the soil. When he takes his place at the A working holiday farm with a difference. That is historic Kersefontein on the banks of the Berg River near Hopefield on the West Coast. Here, in a magnificent 270 year old homestead, the farmer, Julian Melck, dines and wines with his guests. It is a unique experience. head of a 24-seater, 10 meter long mahogany table, under a candelabra with shining candles in a dining room as big as a church hall, time stands still.. When he says grace in the words of an old Dutch table prayer, pours the wine and carves the roast, served with traditional dishes on exquisite porcelain, you turn back your watch at least a hundred years. After dinner, with brandy in front of a fire place in the lounge it becomes an evening to be remembered. You will be lucky to get in. It s normally fully book for months ahead. Accommodation for up to 14 guests is in old, stylishly restored stables from earlier days when Kersefontein was a famous race horse stud farm. It is, of course, not cheap.

8 Page 6 - SEPT 2013 NVASIVE plants are plants that I become problematic in areas in which they would not have naturally occurred. They manage to move outside their home range primarily by human involvement. Sometimes accidentally while other times very much intentionally. For example lots of plant species have been introduced into South Africa for various purposes such as food crops, horticulture, timber, dune stabilization and hedge plants. Many of the plant species are beneficial but there are some about which the Environmental Resource M a n ag em en t h a v e b e en increasingly concerned. These plants dramatically increase their numbers. With no natural enemies invasive species have an advantage over indigenous species as they are able to reproduce rapidly and invade our local ecosystems. They degrade the systems with negative impact on the environment. A few examples of negative impact: The Water hyacinth (Eichhormia crassipes) introduced into South Africa as an ornamental plant has taken over some of our wetlands, rivers and dams. Fennel (foeniculum vulgare) introduced for culinary purposes escaped from gardens in Cape Town invading road verges and public open spaces. Rooikrans (Acacia Cyclops) introduced to stabilize dunes has become a threat to the Fynbos along our coast line. Invasive species invade natural areas tu rning speci es-ri ch environments into single-species monocultures. They disturb the balance by using excessive water or degrade the water quality and indigenous plants struggle to compete for their share. Sometimes they promote soil erosion as well as field fires. It is easy to ignore invasive species but the truth is every one of us is impacted directly or indirectly JOU OMGEWING Identity invasive plant species in your garden A new national government list of invasive fish, reptiles, birds, mammals and plant species was published recently. In terms of the law it requires compulsory control or eradication if a permit is not granted. Some of the 106 invasive plant species listed might be in your garden. It is therefore essential that they be identified and removed. by them. We have a shared responsibility to manage the problem. We can play an active part by getting information about invasive garden plants from internet sources or garden centres. It is important to know about invader species in your garden that might jump the garden fence and be a threat to our biodiversity. The Cape Metropole is located in the heart of the Cape Floristic Region. Some of the vegetation types found here are found nowhere else on earth. To protect our indigenous species threatened with extinction, we must control the Coral creeper (Antigonon leptopus) spread of emerging invasive plants according to NEMBA regulations. Some of them have little impact at the moment but with our suitable habitat could result in becoming a major problem in years to come. In ʼn stadium toe hulle gevoer is was daar meer as honderd.

10 Page 8 - SEPT 2013 KUSBESKERMING : COASTAL PROTECTION The destructive face of nature s fury Seafront aid for Greenways turned down again THE ANTICIPATED extremely high cost to safeguard the already eroded coastline, that deteriorated further during winter storms, seems to be the sole responsibility of Greenways. No financial aid can be expected from the central, provincial and municipal governments. This was once again re-iterated during a visit by officials of the various departments during August. The official excuse for the refusal remains: Owners of private seafront properties are responsible for their own safety regardless of the fact that the bordering dune area up to the high water mark are state/ municipal owned and controlled land. Unless taken further, which is unlikely, Greenways will have to foot the bill to protect the property of seafront owners, some of which have become dangerously close to the encroaching ocean, and its vital security infrastructure. It may run into millions which will certainly mean higher levies. How this will be financed and by whom, implicating the joint responsibility or not of all owners, is still uncertain. Although inside owners also enjoy the coastal amenities, a general feeling exists among many that seafront owners must bear the greatest part, if not all, of the cost of whatever measures are necessary. This question and the full implications will be discussed at the coming AGM. In the aftermath of severe high spring tides, that took away another meter of the dunes, sections of the electric security cabling had to be m o v e d. T h e Damage caused along the beach front during the recent severe high spring tides in September. coastal pathway is also at risk. It may soon become necessary to reroute it further within the boundary of Greenways at the most critical points. In the meantime emergency proposals based on the recently completed environmental impact study are in the process of being finalized and presented to NEMA.

Hulle was bure in Village Green. Mev. Sy was 77.

(Or is it not?) September gave us some celestial days, crystal clear and snow-capped mountains, but then we also had some genuine Cape of Storms weather. The last big one, about the equinox (Sept 21st) was a real humdinger. We saw right away when we got to the beach after the storm that the sea had seriously eroded our dunes; in many places forcing them back some 2 meters. There is little doubt that the sea level is rising not much, but inexorably. The dunes not very impressive at the best of times, are our first and only line of defence. It will be quite Greenways News / Nuus is published, printed and distributed by the Greenways Home Owners Association although all items are not necessarily the opinion of the HOA or the Trustees. All stories and commentary are written, and edited, unless otherwise stated, by: J.A. van Wyk, 22 Village Green, Greenways, Strand, SA, 7140 jvwstop1@telkomsa.net impossible for our Greenways community to afford an alternative line of defence, and in any case nobody may do anything on our beach because it is State land. At the moment the State authorities don t seem to be too concerned. All we can do is to do our best to preserve our dunes and keep off them. Dad says that the September issue of the National Geographic magazine has an excellent article on rising seas. Mooi loop! Bruno, met die hulp van Oortjies. Raymond Amoretti to leave Greenways Longtime resident Raymond Amoretti who did valuable work as consultant for the approval of new building plans for several years will be leaving Greenways towards the end of the year to settle elsewhere in the Helderberg. Being a widower he is now looking for a suitable, smaller place. His wife, a long serving Trustee, passed away some years ago. They had lived in Greenways since Before that he was in a wood joinery business in Johannesburg. His large, stately beachfront home was sold for just under R5 million. He will miss Greenways, but is looking forward to this new stage of his life, despite being in a wheelchair still full of the joys of life.
