PRECEDENT IMAGES Loretto Heights Alumna We foresee a very community oriented place, with room for gatherings, small festivals, and communal activities. Green space abounds, with the ag ditch and pond taking a starring role, as it flows and meanders through the campus and into the Quad. An outdoor ampitheatre will help tie together all of the cultural amenities located on the campus. And finally, the historic buildings can be given new life as homes, along with the addition of sensitively designed neighborhoods surrounding them. - Norma Brown & Martha Kirkpatrick

WORKSHOP VISION ELEMENTS
DENVERIGHT VISION ELEMENTS Blueprint Denver is the foundation for the city s major land use and transportation decisions, establishing citywide policies to achieve this idea of an inclusive city. Establishes a framework for small area plans that provide more detailed guidance As small area plans are adopted, it is important to demonstrate their connection to the vision in Blueprint Denver Small area plans provide the opportunity to refine the recommendations of Blueprint Denver but not contradict the larger, citywide goals Think about what these vision elements mean for the Loretto Heights Area Plan
PUBLIC INPUT DRIVES THE VISION LIKES & ASSETS 1 2 EQUITABLE, AFFORDABLE & INCLUSIVE STRONG & AUTHENTIC NEIGHBORHOODS WORRIES & CONCERNS 3 4 CONNECTED, SAFE & ACCESSIBLE PLACES ECONOMICALLY DIVERSE & VIBRANT HOPES & OPPORTUNITIES 5 ENVIRONMENTALLY RESILIENT 6 HEALTHY & ACTIVE
DRAFT VISION ELEMENT Equitable, Affordable & Inclusive What we ve heard so far Assets Variety of socio-economic conditions Diversity of building types and ages on the former campus Worries The increased cost of housing Gentrification of surrounding neighborhoods Lack of redevelopment on the east side of Federal Boulevard Hopes The creation of a place, identity and destination for southwest Denver More Hispanic/Latino community engagement and available resources Wide range of housing options for different/diverse populations (including affordable housing) The Area Plan is inclusive in income levels and ethnic diversity
DRAFT VISION ELEMENT Equitable, Affordable & Inclusive Residents, employees, and visitors find unique public gathering spaces among a dynamic and diverse mix of uses that cater to a variety of socio-economic levels. The area is a destination for the community and provides a collective identity for southwest Denver. A mixture of housing types provides opportunities for residents to live, work, and play while minimizing the impacts of gentrification and increasing housing costs. The revitalization of Loretto Heights allows investment and redevelopment along Federal Boulevard to be more feasible and attractive, ultimately transitioning to a distinctive, enhanced corridor that will become a source of pride for all of Denver.
How did we do? 1. The vision element is very representative of the feedback. 2. The vision element is fairly representative of the feedback. 3. The vision element is missing some key points of feedback. 4. The vision element is missing the mark completely. 62% 23% 15% 0%
DRAFT VISION ELEMENT Strong and Authentic Neighborhoods What we ve heard so far Assets The iconic and historic buildings, including the Administration Building, the Chapel, Pancratia Hall, the Library & Theater, and the swimming pool (and others) Viewshed & view plane Unique topography Cemetery as sacred ground Rich history of the site Worries No identity within southwest Denver The loss of and lack of perpetual care for the cemetery Hopes Preservation of historic buildings Variety of public gathering spaces (pool, events center and using the quad as the heart of the development and hub for the community) Gateway promenade from Federal Boulevard up the east entrance of the Administration building. Maintain this view. Enhance visibility of the cemetery
DRAFT VISION ELEMENT Strong and Authentic Neighborhoods The community is viewed as one of the most unique places in the city due to its architectural diversity and tremendous views of Denver and the mountains. The rich history of the campus has been preserved and serves as an active cultural hub for southwest Denver. Enhancement of the grounds and expansion of open space, coupled with the preservation and reuse of historic buildings, makes Loretto Heights an easily identifiable place that everyone in the community can enjoy. Cultural amenities reflect the diversity of the neighborhood and continue to respect the sacred and historical integrity of the former campus.
How did we do? 1. The vision element is very representative of the feedback. 2. The vision element is fairly representative of the feedback. 3. The vision element is missing some key points of feedback. 4. The vision element is missing the mark completely. 43% 43% 14% 0%
DRAFT VISION ELEMENT Connected, Safe & Accessible Spaces What we ve heard so far Assets Connection and proximity to existing Loretto Heights Park Neighborhood feel and local connectivity Central location to southern metro area and easy access west into the mountains Worries Increased traffic congestion within the surrounding neighborhood Lack of pedestrian-friendly streets, specifically Irving Street, Federal Boulevard and Yale Avenue Dartmouth Avenue punching through to Dartmouth Heights & South Lowell Boulevard Lack of access and connections through the site and into the surrounding neighborhoods. It s hard to get from north-to-south and from east-to-west. Campus feels closed off. Hopes Redevelopment of Federal Boulevard to become safer and more pedestrian friendly Leveraging Denver Vision Zero Better wayfinding opportunities through pedestrian signage
DRAFT VISION ELEMENT Connected, Safe & Accessible Spaces Residents, employees, and visitors enjoy walking, biking, and using other transit on well-maintained streets which equitably serve the neighborhood. All residents and visitors, including children, seniors, and people with disabilities, have safe and convenient options to get to work, shop, or visit a park in the area. As a pedestrian, it is very easy to navigate through the site because of a comprehensive pedestrian network with sidewalks and crossings that are safe, accessible, and well-maintained. The community is served by bicycle infrastructure that is accessible for all riding levels. Reliable, frequent, and affordable transit serves the area, and well-maintained transit stops are easy to access and provide a comfortable place to wait.
How did we do? 1. The vision element is very representative of the feedback. 2. The vision element is fairly representative of the feedback. 3. The vision element is missing some key points of feedback. 4. The vision element is missing the mark completely. 57% 21% 21% 0%
DRAFT VISION ELEMENT Economically Diverse & Vibrant What we ve heard so far Assets Variety of socio-economic conditions Worries Lack of redevelopment on the east side of Federal Boulevard Hopes Neighborhood-serving commercial uses Theater serving as an anchor and a cultural center for southwest Denver Increased density and commercial uses along Federal Boulevard Affordable and pedestrian-friendly mix of uses throughout the area More local restaurants and coffee shops
DRAFT VISION ELEMENT Economically Diverse & Vibrant The community benefits from its strong, self-sustaining economy. Federal Boulevard and the other mixed-use centers and corridors in the area are welcoming to all and thriving with diverse, multicultural and locally-owned businesses that complement the surrounding residential neighborhoods and showcase the area s diverse culture. The community cultivates opportunities for residents and workers by supporting new development and the retention of a range of businesses, employment, education, and training options. A vibrant local arts and culture community makes the area a great place to spend time, enhancing the quality of life for all residents and strengthening local businesses.
How did we do? 1. The vision element is very representative of the feedback. 2. The vision element is fairly representative of the feedback. 3. The vision element is missing some key points of feedback. 4. The vision element is missing the mark completely. 50% 29% 14% 7%
DRAFT VISION ELEMENT Environmentally Resilient What we ve heard so far Assets Natural beauty of the area including existing wildlife and older, mature trees The quad located just west of the Administration Building Worries High-density housing and strain on infrastructure (water, sewer and how this affects other communities) Minimal amount of park space for residents Destruction of the tree canopy Hopes Reopening of irrigation ditch Maintain irrigation ditch as green space and spine of community
DRAFT VISION ELEMENT Environmentally Resilient The community has a healthy and robust natural ecosystem. An extensive tree canopy provides cool and shaded public spaces. An enhanced open space network of trails, parkways, and plazas is thoughtfully woven into the neighborhood and takes advantage of the unique topography of the area. The community guides growth and development in a responsible and sustainable way to protect and enhance the environment for future generations.
How did we do? 1. The vision element is very representative of the feedback. 2. The vision element is fairly representative of the feedback. 3. The vision element is missing some key points of feedback. 4. The vision element is missing the mark completely. 62% 23% 15% 0%
DRAFT VISION ELEMENT Healthy & Active What we ve heard so far Assets Existing open space, trails and irrigation ditch Connection and proximity to existing Loretto Heights Park Worries No nearby grocer / access to fresh food. Especially for those lacking access to a personal vehicle Minimal amount of park space for residents Hopes Expansion of parks and open space, connecting to Lakewood Gulch Trail and Bear Creek Trail / Platte River Trail Variety of public gathering spaces (pool, events center and using the quad as the heart of the development and hub for the community) Enhance local trail connections Local supermarket or farm-to-table options
DRAFT VISION ELEMENT Healthy & Active An equitable allocation of resources has increased opportunity for people who face the greatest barriers to good health. All households have safe, walkable and bikeable access to an array of diverse, affordable and healthy food, including grocery stores, community gardens, and restaurants. Residents can safely access well-maintained parks, trails and open space networks with a mix of amenities and activities where everyone feels safe and welcome. There is a strong sense of community; neighbors know one another, public spaces are vibrant and active, and residents enjoy improved health and access to opportunity.
How did we do? 1. The vision element is very representative of the feedback. 2. The vision element is fairly representative of the feedback. 3. The vision element is missing some key points of feedback. 4. The vision element is missing the mark completely. 54% 38% 8% 0%
