2 FORUM OF RESULTS EUROPAN 11 / CITY LABORATORY TOPIC 5 RHYTHMS AND TIME ATZGERSDORF Induced by multiple temporalities of the uses in the contemporary city, the urban rhythms have intensified so much, that, today, we speak of a city operating 24 hours 24. Whether dealing with the integration of different speeds and mobility in the urban fabric, of the multiple uses of space in time, or even of the evolution of urban project, this theme is a recurrent problem in a number of winning projects of Europan 11. They have in common to use the dimension of time as a tool of reconnection, developing relationships between the city dwellers and natural and urban rhythms. The site in Vienna on this topic is ATZGERSDORF AREA. Dynamizing a hybrid area by creating rhythms in the uses of spaces, introducing time in the process of mutation With Winners of Amsterdam (NL) And Runners-up of Allerød (DK), Graz (AT), Ingolstadt (DE), Linz (AT), Savenay (FR), Skien-Porsgrunn (NO), Stains (FR), Toulouse (FR) Coach: Stéphane BONZANI, architect, Paris (FR) 233
3 FORUM OF RESULTS EUROPAN 11 / CITY LABORATORY TOPIC 5 RHYTHMS AND TIME INTRODUCTION Regarding to the main issue of the session the «reconnection» rhythms and time appear as crucial stakes for the ecological city. Indeed, if the functional city was based on a clear dissociation of social times working time, moving time, studying time, recreating time, sleeping time the ecological city aims to reconnect them and to invent new synergies between these rhythms. For instance, the ecological urban space should provide the possibility for different speeds and mobilities to coexist. It should also offer the opportunity to live and work in the same place. Moreover, the ecological city project is funded on a series of strong interactions between urban structures and natural environment. In terms of time and rhythms, this means to take into account the season s cycles, the day and night cycles, the growth of living beings, plants and animals. The main idea is to regenerate the city by various relationships to the non-human nature. The ecological city is also a new way of thinking about our common future, not as a totally planned future. Therefore, the selected projects of the E11 session propose open scenarios that would be able to integrate unexpected events, positive or negative, with some resilience. The idea of scenario is essential: it s a guideline that can be adopted by different actors according to a more democratic sharing. We could call these three stakes ( co-flowing, urban-nature co-rhythms and open scenarios) related to the time in ecological city the ECO-RHYTHMS. The Atzgerzdorf area, located in the southwest of Vienna, is characterized by a series of enclaves responding to different rhythms. People live there in separated times according to their ages, activities etc. The TRANSWORLDS scenario does not start from scratch but uses the potentiality of each enclave to develop new interactions. By introducing new programs, new actions in urban life, the project aims to give to the inhabitants a chance to share spaces and times, in order to regenerate their quality of life.
