Welcome The Ahmadiyya Muslim Association (AMA) Welcome to this public exhibition. Here we will set out the proposals for the modernisation of the Islamabad site at Sheephatch Lane in Tilford, Surrey. The plans, driven by the Ahmadiyya Muslim Association (AMA), in conjunction with Sutton Griffin Architects, will both modernise and improve the educational and religious facilities as well as the ancillary accommodation, currently on the site. The Centre The Islamabad Centre on Sheephatch Lane provides educational and religious instruction for its members who live on the site. Islamabad subsequently forms a regional centre for AMA activities in the West of London, serving communities in Tilford, Farnham, Aldershot, Oxford, Woking, Guildford, Bournemouth, Reading and Crawley. Members of the AMA can stay within ancillary accommodation on the site and there are conference, library facilities and a gym, in addition to AMA offices and a mosque. existing views of site 1
Existing site The current buildings are in a dilapidated state and are unfit for purpose. They were originally erected as temporary accommodation during the Second World War. Environmentally, the current buildings perform extremely poorly and are in desperate need of replacement. In their current state the buildings require constant maintenance and do not meet modern standards. The AMA wishes to continue in its role as a long-term custodian of the site in order to provide educational and religious resources for decades to come. The organisation cannot achieve this aim with the current facilities on site. existing views of site 2
Opportunities In light of the need for a major modernisation there are a number of opportunities associated with the site. These include the delivery of: Buildings that are more in keeping with the local environment, meeting the needs of the community. An open and community focused environment, enhancing the facilities that are already utilised currently. A sustainable development with modern technology driving down carbon emissions and making best use of the site s natural assets. N Building Function Key Resident accomodation existing site plan Gym WC Provision Administration Religious Education Prayer Principal's Accomodation Catering Printing Press Guest Accomodation Storage Stables Assembly and Dining Hall 3
Proposals In summary the proposals include: New, replacement purpose built religious and education facilities that mean the community can worship and learn in a modern environment. Replacement of the existing mosque and sports hall, overlooking the open space but shielded by tree and landscape cover. Like for like, modern residential accommodation for the existing community, with no increase in the number of units provided on site. Use of timber cladding throughout will blend the buildings in with the woodland surroundings. Landscaping and public realm improvements to accentuate the green nature of the site. The proposals have the dual benefit of providing bespoke facilities for the existing community and a vernacular and design more in keeping with the woodland setting of the site. N Building Function Key Resident accomodation proposed site plan Gym WC Provision Administration Religious Education Prayer Principal's Accomodation Catering Printing Press Guest Accomodation Storage Stables Assembly and Dining Hall 4
Design Designed to be sensitive to its greenbelt environment, the new buildings are located on the existing site footprints, adopting a similar mass and scale. The family houses retain their terraced formation, in a new two storey arrangement, with only a nominal increase in height. The new buildings, including guest accommodation, classrooms, a printing press, assembly hall and mosque, will benefit from improved sustainability and energy efficiency. They will be modern and contemporary, using appropriate and sensitive materials such as natural timber cladding and low-pitched roofs with photovoltaic energy generating capabilities. proposed view of classrooms proposed view of living accommodation The site also offers an opportunity to create a stunning new mosque for residents on-site, befitting of the community s purpose and status. Sitting comfortably in the natural surroundings, the faceted timber clad design tapers to a traditional dome, accompanied by two minarets that will double as wind turbines. proposed view of mosque and sports hall 5
Community Benefits Although principally a facility for the AMA and its delegates, a number of community benefits will be derived from the modernisation of the site: The sports hall will be opened for community use. In particular, potentially benefitting the local school. The modernisation will not only be sympathetic to the environment, but will actually enhance it. As part of its aim to be a long-term custodian of Islamabad, The AMA is willing to accept any restriction which only permits the AMA to occupy the site preventing developers exploiting the land for commercial gain. The AMA intends to retain the equestrian facilities which are already open to the community. Employment will be created through the construction process. proposed view of mosque and sports hall 6
