2 WMC key staff has completed numerous landscape architectural projects with unique environmental features and development programs. The Landscape Architecture Studio has designed public parks, recreation facilities, streetscapes, urban plazas, and mixed-use commercial and residential complexes. WMC has taken a strong stance on integration of green strategies into projects to assist in stormwater management and to promote environmental health. From large scale campus plans to small scale intimate courtyards, the WMC Landscape Architecture Studio has successfully completed and continues to work on exciting projects in the Washington DC area and beyond. WMC s landscape architectural expertise also includes completing numerous low impact design landscape strategies in unique urban environments. The design and implementation of these advanced stormwater treatments have proved to be beneficial creating urban greenspace while helping to reduce the load on the centralized stormwater system. The landscape architecture studio has completed varying scopes and sizes of projects. 7 Justice Park Apartments Justice Park is a new residential development located in NE Washington DC. It is a four story residential complex located just north of the U Street corridor. The development will be designed to meet the needs of individuals who are hearing impaired. WMC s landscape architecture studio designed a two level exterior courtyard with these users in mind. A curvilinear design scheme emerged providing ease of movement and ample opportunity for congregating and community space. The courtyards will feature a fire pit, a curved monumental stair as well as various landscape and planting features. The second level of the courtyard will be built over structure requiring a high level of coordination and technical detail. 9 Howard University - College Street Dorm WMC is part of the design team for this seven story, 138,000 sq ft, 484 bed residential facility for undergraduate students at Howard University. The site is centrally located at Howard University Campus on 4th Street between Bryant and College Street, NW. The facility will include sleeping quarters, social lounges, recreation center, study rooms, and laundry facilities. WMC is slated to provided civil engineering and landscape architecture services. Specific scope of services includes site, stromwater management, utility, and streetscape, courtyard design. Services will also incorporate LEED design elements in order to gain accreditation. WMC Landscape Architecture completed full landscape services for the new dorm facility on the campus of Howard University in NW DC. The project is a high use area for students and needed to be designed as such so as to provide a long lasting an aesthetically pleasing facility. The streetscape was designed with pedestrian flow and safety, and green infrastructure in mind. WMC LA worked with appropriate District agencies and the design team to come to a final design that would appease all parties. The project included a new terrace on the backside of the building that ties into the existing courtyard to the south. This plaza will serve as an activity zone for students utilizing the cafeteria, or gathering and studying outdoors. 11 Howard University - Bryant Street Dorm WMC is part of the design team for this six story, 250,000 sq ft, 878 bed residential facility for undergraduate students at Howard University. The site is centrally located at Howard University Campus on 4th Street between Bryant and College Street, NW. The facility will include sleeping quarters, social lounges, recreation center, study rooms, laundry facilities, as well as a terrace level with classrooms, facility offices, and meeting rooms. WMC is currently providing civil engineering and landscape architecture services. Specific scope of services includes site, stromwater management, utility, and streetscape, courtyard design. Services will also incorporate LEED design elements in order to gain accreditation. WMC Landscape Architecture completed full landscape services for the new dorm facility. The project is a high use area for students and needed to be designed as such so as to provide a long lasting an aesthetically pleasing facility. The streetscape was designed with pedestrian flow and safety, and green infrastructure in mind. WMC worked with appropriate District agencies and the design team to come to a final design that would appease all parties. The project included a courtyard on the backside of the facility to serve student life. A patio space with planters and integrated lighting and seating, and a lawn panel will all serve as extensions of the interior spaces and be used by students in multiple ways. The courtyard also contains a large rain garden that will treat over half of the new facilities roof surface. 13 West End Development - Square 50 WMC is providing landscape architecture, civil engineering, and surveying services for this one of a kind mixed-use facility. This development will include the 15,500 sq ft West End fire station, 20,650 sq ft of commercial space for a two-story squash club, 53,600 sq ft for affordable dwelling units, and 12,466 sq ft parking garage. This unique developments involves permitting coordination and approval from the Commission of Fine Arts. This project is being designed to meet LEED Silver certification requirements. WMC Landscape Architecture completed full landscape services for the mixuse development in NW Washington DC. The residential project with a first floor fire station and commercial space had to function to accommodate a variety of users. The streetscape was designed with pedestrian flow and safety, and green infrastructure in mind. WMC landscape archtiecture studio worked with appropriate District agencies and the design team to come to a final design that would appease all parties. The project also included a green roof terrace and a full green roof on the project. The green roof was designed to soften the edges of the terraces as well as to help offset the stormwater impacts of the new construction. 15 Parkside - Parcel 7 WMC is providing landscape architecture and civil engineering services for this 183,000 sq ft residential complex with below grade parking. Cost: TBD Size: 183,000 sq ft Client: Grimm + Parker WMC Landscape Architecture completed full landscape services for the project located in SE DC. The design includes an updated streetscape, geared towards maintaining as much green and existing street tree canopy as possible. WMC LA worked with appropriate District agencies and the design team to come to a final design that would appease all parties. The project features an over structure courtyard that ties into the interior amenities space. The courtyard is designed in a way to provide opportunities for quiet contemplative use or for larger social functions. The courtyard will feature multiple design elements including seatwalls, a large shade structure and a small water feature, all coordinated with the building to provide an aesthetic hat will be pleasing to all residents from both inside or out of the building. 17 Barry Farms Recreational Center As a result of the citywide initiative to renovate and construct recreation centers and public parks, the District of Columbia s Department of Parks and Recreation is adapting the former Barry Farms Park to house the 8,000 sq ft Barry Farm Recreation Center. WMC is assisting the team with full landscape architecture services for the new facility. The design includes synthetic turf playing fields, retaining walls, pedestrian routes and native low maintenance planting design. In depth design focus took place for the new playground facility which is placed on the roof of the structure, yet still accessible from grade. An exterior courtyard will serve as an area for community events and as an outdoor extension for center activities. The space will include seatwalls, stormwater conveyance channels and a mounded landscape, that will provide a variety of options for use. Low impact design strategies will also be used to minimize the impacts of stormwater runoff from the site. The center as a whole is designed to meet the growing needs of the localized community, providing a high end facility in an underserved area of the city. 19 BET Headquarters WMC is providing civil engineering, landscape architecture, and construction administration services in conjunction with the renovation to the BET headquarters facility located in. A complete renovation of the exterior spaces will integrate into the newly renovated interior and provide an appropriate entry sequence to the corporate headquarters. WMC Landscape Architecture designed an entry sequence featuring undulating serpentine walls with integrated lighting. These walls highlight the new entry vestibule that guest will reach via a specialty paving area that also serves as a BET walk of fame. Integrated Ipe wooden benches, and complimentary plantings were designed to accent and enhance the flowing lines of the walls. A rear patio space was also designed as part of the project to allow overflow space for an interior conference room, as well as provide a visual barrier to the surrounding industrial uses in this area of the city. 21 601 Massachusetts Avenue, NW 601 Massachusetts Avenue is a newly designed 450,000 sq ft building that will primarily contain office space and retail space. The new facility will be located on a triangular site previously occupied by the National Public Radio headquarters which will be demolished. The new facility will be designed to meet LEED Gold Standards at a minimum. The landscape architecture scope of services for this project includes streetscape design that adheres to the Mount Vernon Triangle Overlay District. Great coordination with the architects also occurs to ensure that the main entry of the new development will work in concert with the interior space resulting in public and private spaces combining to create a grand entrance bisected by a glass wall. The extra wide street frontage allowed for an interesting public space. This space will include large planting areas, as well as seating and café spaces. 23 Jefferson at Market Square WMC participated in the design for the Jefferson at Market Square development, a proposed mixed-use project consisting of a 9-story apartment building with 2 levels of underground parking. The site in measuring 1 acre, fronts 7th Street, NW, P Street to the south, and Q Street, NW to the North. WMC Landscape Architecture developed an overall site plan for the development incorporating the 7th Street/Georgia Ave Great Streets Initiative into the site and merging it with the proposed building s design. Two first floor, on structure, courtyards were designed to provide amenity spaces for the residents. These spaces include gathering spaces, a bocci court and a contemplative garden space. WMC also designed a 7th floor roof terrace featuring an exterior bar, grilling station, fire pit and TV viewing area. This terrace will be the feature area for residents offering great views along 7th Street and providing a prime amenity space. Lastly WMC designed a roof top pool deck area for prospective residents. This level features a pool as well as a large sunning deck, gas grills and an overhead trellis. 25 St. Albans School WMC provided landscape architecture services for the new recreational facilities at St. Albans School located on Massachusetts Avenue, NW and within the grounds of the Washington National Cathedral in. The proposed facilities included new athletic fields, stadium, press boxes, and enhanced landscape features. WMC landscape architecture scope includes the design of a large entry plaza, stone retaining walls, outdoor state of the art tennis facilities, multi-use athletic fields, and stadium seating. The landscape features were designed to extend the look and feel of the Olmstead Woods into the finished developed site. 26 1050 First Street, NE WMC is providing landscape architecture services for st Street, NE which is the second phase of Sentinel Square, a 1.8 million sq ft masterplanned commercial office development st Street, NE is being designed to create a cohesive streetscape for the full frontage of 1st and L Street, NE. Specialty paving will highlight the entrance to the facility, and a double row of street trees provide a vast amount of shade and scale. In addition, WMC s Landscape Architecture Studio is working closely with DC Permitting Agencies to establish the final design. This project is also being designed to meet LEED Gold certification. Cost: $120 M Size: 1.8 M sq ft Client: Trammell Crow Company The Vue The Vue is a highly anticipated mixed-use residential project located on Georgia Avenue in Washington, DC. The seven-story building is proposed to have 10,000 sq ft of ground level retail with residential units on the remaining levels. The development will be a major step in helping to revitalize the Georgia Avenue corridor which has been a major focus of the DC Office of Planning for many years. WMC landscape architecture scope of services includes site design, streetscape design, green roof design, and a roof terrace. Green design elements will also be incorporated into the design of this mixed-use development. The streetscape design includes upgrading the site to meet the Georgia Avenue Great Streets Program. The green roof will feature a patio space for residents and a bermed landscape allowing the planting of trees and a pedestrian scaled environment. The roof terrace features curvilinear walls and earthen mounds, providing interest, scale an aesthetic pleasing environment. Cost: TBD Size: 22,000 sq ft Client: Neighborhood Development Company
27 900 G Street, NW WMC is providing surveying, civil engineering, and landscape architecture services for a newly constructed 9-story 110,000 sq ft office building with 6,500 sq ft of retail space located on 9th and G Streets, NW. WMATA structures are located under both 9th and G Streets, adjacent to the site which effected the final design of the site. The civil engineering components of this project also required extensive coordination with local permitting agencies such as DC Water, DDOE, DCRA, WMATA and DDOT. The design features an updated streetscape with specialty entry and building plinth paving. The project alson includes a green roof and patio space. The roof will consist of an extensive greenroof, designed to absorb the stormwater runoff from the roof surface. The patio space will be utilized for events and social gatherings. The LEED rated building will also feature an irrigation system that utilizes captured condensate water to irrigate the greenroof, allowing it to grow and thrive throughout the year. Cost: $65 M Size: 110,000 sq ft Client: MRP Realty Mount Vernon Village Center WMC is providing landscape architectural services for this proposed mixed use development that includes retail space on the ground level, and two levels of below grade parking. The project will be constructed in two phases; the east side of the site will be developed in the first phase and the west side of the site will be developed in the second phase. The residential component of this project consists of 5 levels of residential space with a rooftop pool and community garden terrace. WMC landscape architecture worked with city officials to develop an acceptable City of Alexandria streetscape that is suitable for the development while adhering to the intent of the Arlandria Small Area Plan. Coordination was also completed with the City to integrate the development with the existing 4 Mile Run Park to ensure access and safety for the community. The entry courtyard, designed all on structure, will feature public art and provide a high end entrance to the facility. This will serve as a promenade providing a better connection from the neighborhood to the park. Cost: TBD Size: 600,000 sq ft Client: Gould Property Company The two rooftop courtyards will feature a swimming pool, resident gathering spaces, and contribute to the sites green open space. The terraces will feature many elements that will be attractive to residents and promote outdoor social activities.
28 Washington Tennis & Education Foundation In effort to accommodate children in underserved neighborhoods of Washington DC, Washington Tennis & Education Foundation is building a tennis facility that is located in Southeast Washington DC. The new facility will enable their students to play year around in indoor and outdoor facilities. The facility will be located on a seven acre site in Ward 7 near a number of schools that currently participate in the afterschool program. The site will contain six indoor hard courts and nine outdoor courts, 1,500 sq ft community room, five classrooms, weight/exercise room with locker rooms, and staff space. WMC landscape architecture services for this project. includes, site layout, grading, terracing, tree preservation, as well as pedestrian and vehicular flow. Careful layout of the pedestrian paths is an important factor for this project in order to allow accessible access to all parts of the facility on this site consisting of great elevation change. An entry plaza was designed for use as a drop off and gathering zone that can support emergency vehicle access when required. The integration of bio-retention plantings is also being implemented to reduce the amount of stormwater leaving the site. Cost: $10 M Size: 7 acres Client: Neighborhood Development Company DC Water - Parking Facility WMC provided design services for the development of an environment friendly parking facility. This included utilizing LID (Low Impact Development) and energy efficient construction for this project. The parking lot pavement is covered with a Cool Pavement coating that reduces surface temperatures and lighting requirements. Surface drainage from the lot is directed to rain gardens, which reduces runoff and promotes infiltration. Plants were selected that have low water requirements and are acclimated to the local climate, eliminating the need for irrigation upon establishment. A portion of the planting zone is reserved for researching new planting media. These elements were incorporated into a design that simulates flowing water or waves. In addition, a ribbon of color runs through the parking area paving. The planting mixes are organized in waves that meander through the planting areas over varying topography.
