1 City of Evanston Fountain Square Visioning Public Input Outreach Comments Summaries Memorandum January The following memorandum documents input gathered related to the Fountain Square Visioning Outreach activities. Outreach activities took place between 10/16/ /09/2014 and are further described on the following pages and below: Activity Description Participation 1 Website & Social Media 2 Questionnaire / Fountain Square Post 3 Comment Cards / Idea Tip Jars Visioning Project promoted by COE via the following platforms. Comments were gathered and documented: 1. COE Website. 2. COE Next Door Social Media Platform; 3. COE Engage Evanston Website. Questionnaires were distributed via two methods: 1. Handed to participants during the Harvest Events. 2. Placed in Fountain Square Post stations installed by COE Public Works Dept in Fountain Square Plaza. Comments were collected weekly and documented. Comments Cards and Idea Tip Jars were placed in participating businesses businesses surrounding Fountain Square. Comment cards were gathered weekly and documented. Questionnaires were collected and documented. 1. Handed to participants during the Harvest Events. 2. Distributed to the Downtown Evanston Board during one of their regularly scheduled meetings. Participants were interviewed during Harvest Events activities: 1. Children s Coloring Tent 2. Big Maps Activity: A block building activity in which forms and arrangements were discussed for the plaza area. 3. Sound Stage/Video Booth: Input was recorded via smartphone recording devices. 2 RECOMMENDED GOALS STATEMENTS Based on the input gathered and further described on the following pages, certain themes became evident as goals that may be explored during concept development. Major themes focused on openness, greening, pedestrian safety, play and community gatherings. The following four goals statements are provided for consideration: By 2018, Evanston s Fountain Square Plaza will be recognized as.. 1) An imaginative family friendly play space; 2) A sustainable and innovative high tech green space; 3) A vibrant pedestrian oriented event space; 4) A programmed all season community fest space. VISIONING INPUT ACTIVITY 1 NAME: Website and Social Media Comments (10/16/ /05/2014) METHODOLOGY: The City of Evanston announced the Fountain Square Visioning Project via the following social media outlets: 1. Micro site within the City of Evanston s website; 2. City of Evanston s Next Door social media platform: 3. City of Evanston s Engage Evanston Website. The following comments were recorded in response to the announcement and prompt below: The City is planning to renovate and improve Fountain Square Plaza. This area includes Sherman Plaza; Sherman Avenue, between Church and Davis Streets; and adjacent landscape areas. While certain plaza functions will remain, such as the Veterans Memorial and a fountain, the City is interested in your thoughts on what additional amenities and activities you would like to see accommodated in the area. RESULTS: A total of 52 comments were returned. Multiple comments were recorded. Comments were evaluated and grouped into recommendation categories. Recommendation categories are identified below, with further descriptions of each category provided. 2 of 32

4 VISIONING INPUT ACTIVITY 2 NAME: Questionnaire / Fountain Square Post METHODOLOGY: Comments sheets distributed during passive and active events asked participants to identify themselves as a resident or visitor and to respond to the following questions: 1. Describe a desirable scene for the Plaza. 2. List 3 desirable activities for the Plaza. Comments sheets were distributed via two methods: 1. At the Fountain Square Post (10/20/ /07/2014) 2. During the Harvest Activities (10/25/ /27/2014) RESULTS: A total of 88 comments sheets were returned from the following participants: 1. Visitors: 8 participants 2. Residents: 65 participants 3. Unidentified: 15 participants Within each comments sheet, multiple comments were recorded. Some comments sheets were partially completed and some comments sheets yielded additional information. All comments were evaluated and grouped into recommendation categories. Recommendation categories are identified below, with further descriptions of each category provided. 6 VISIONING INPUT ACTIVITY 3 NAME: Comment Cards / Tip Jar Comments METHODOLOGY: Comment cards and glass jars were distributed to participating downtown businesses (10/16/ /07/2014). Posters were placed in storefront windows. Comment cards asked participants to identify themselves as a resident or visitor and to provide their input regarding the Fountain Square Project. RESULTS: A total of 52 comment cards were returned from the following participants: 1. Visitors: 8 participants 2. Residents: 39 participants 3. Unidentified: 5 participants Within each individual comment card, multiple comments were recorded. Comments were evaluated and grouped into recommendation categories. Recommendation categories are identified below, with further descriptions of each category provided.
