1 BUCKS COUNTY ORCHID SOCIETY NEWSLETTER May, 2017 See us on Facebook BCOS Meeting and Program Thursday, May 18, 2017 Churchville Nature Center 501 Churchville Lane Churchville, PA Show Table Setup-7:00 p.m. Meeting 7:30 p.m. Program: The History of C. dowiana breeding, After retiring from IBM, Kathleen Harvey decided to share her passion for everything green. Kathleen visited numerous botanical gardens and arboretums to see plants growing in their natural habitats as well as experiencing different approaches to landscape architecture and design. Kathleen has been growing and exhibiting plants since childhood, participating and holding leadership positions in many garden clubs, flower shows, orchid, cactus, and succulent societies. She has been a Philadelphia Flower Show exhibitor, volunteer and donor for the last 22 years. Hosting Going Green!, on cable TV along with her newspaper column, she helps to educate the public on topics related to growing plants, food, cooking and eating healthy, along with ways to reduce individual carbon footprint and promote sustainability. Kathleen donates plants and volunteers for several local horticulture causes and charities that have included Longwood Gardens, the Horticultural Society of South Jersey, Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, and the Philadelphia International Flower Show. Kathleen led landscaping efforts for the charity Build Jake s Place, which built the first boundless playground in Camden County, and is now covered in more than one thousand trees, shrubs, perennials, and bulbs. She also developed the landscape design for the restoration of the Peter J McGuire National Monument in SJ. Kathleen holds a BS degree in Business Administration from Drexel University and has attained numerous plant awards, including AOS awards for orchids and best in show at flower shows. She lectures and conducts hands on workshops for garden, municipalities, retirement homes, orchid societies, and local after school programs Visit our website: President s Message Dear BCOS Members, Along with the attached Duffin Estate sale information, I want to let you know about 2 more exciting opportunities for BCOS members to share their love of orchids with other people. First, we've been invited to participate in the Churchville Nature Center's annual Open House on Saturday May 20, 2017 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. This will be an opportunity to display some of our beautiful plants and some of our brochures and flyers on a table that the Nature Center will provide for us. Please let me know if you are able to help represent BCOS. Second, I applied on behalf of BCOS and was accepted to enter the Philadelphia Horticultural Society Flower Show! BCOS will have a 4' by 4' display along with five other same size displays from other local organizations. Frank and I have a plan for the display but it's always nice to have others involved. I've been gathering information and planning for several months now, and the first formal planning meeting is May 25, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at the Philadelphia Horticultural Society headquarters at 20th and Arch. Please let me know if you would like to attend this meeting with me. I don't mind driving. Finally, this month starts the new year for showtable awards awards will be awarded on Wednesday, June 21, 2017 at our Annual Awards and Pot Luck Dinner (setup 6:00 p.m. dinner at 6;30 p.m.). It is always a fun time and I encourage all members to attend. With the new awards year, revised rule changes, including category changes, voted on by the membership go into effect. Please discard any showtable entry forms you may have. New entry forms with the new categories will be provided at the meeting. I hope you and your plants are all doing well! Please contact Allen Applebaum at sirapples@aol.com to volunteer. Plant Clinic: You are encouraged to bring in that sick plant for evaluation by the expert orchid growers in our Society. Please, bring the needy plant in a closed plastic bag and we will try to advise you on bringing it back to good health. Show Table Judging Rules: See the website for information on submitting plants for the show table, showtables/strules.htm BCOS recognizes and awards the growing and flowering of plants. Keeping this in mind, members are asked to please remember that anything brought to the show table for judging, should have been in their care for at least 90 days. Bring an orchid to the show table or bring refreshments and get a free raffle ticket for that night s raffle. Officers, Other Societies and Vendors: The list of officers, other societies and vendors is now exclusively available on the BCOS website. for officers and for other societies and vendors.
