Communication and Negotiation: Terms / Tactics / Strategies
1. Demystifying design Image: Gary Cooper, 1949 Warner Bros. Production The Fountainhead Kobal Collection
It Starts at School: We will continue an ongoing investigation into multi-scalar flow remediation strategies that attempt to merge the cultural with the environmental, moving beyond pure optimisation strategies to cultivate a breeding ground for the exotic and the novel. For this, the unit will work on developing formal performance organisations that negotiate between the exuberant and the ecological, to embed a type of flamboyant environmentalism within ornamental structural systems. This mode of operating, which seeks to balance the prolific with the purely functional, is characterised by the context within which the unit intervenes: Brazilian popular culture is defined by jeitinho is a tactical way of negotiating harsh survival strategies with the simple type of exuberance found in samba or the jogo bonito Moveable fabric light modification devices (otherwise known as curtains)
Defensible Space Figure Ground Social Condenser Shadow Gap Active Frontage Urban Grain Semi-private space Legibility Interface Cross-programme Green Wall Axonometric Permeability
Don t get confused and don t let words fool you. If it doesn t seem to make sense, it probably doesn t make sense. Be confident. You are already an expert: We all know a bit about design We use design knowledge every day We choose clothes to wear every morning and judge others by what they wear We use design awareness when we make or choose a sandwich Buying things. Sophisticated understanding of design through advertising and branding. Shared design classics Design in the media. The Grand Designs effect We all live in designed environments and have highly sophisticated knowledge and opinions about them

2. Common Terminology When it comes to the language we use to describe or assess design, it makes sense to use a shared terminology to avoid confusion and misinterpretation The best place to start is By Design
Principles of good design: Character Continuity and enclosure Quality of public realm Ease of movement Legibility Adaptability Diversity
Character: Sense of place and history A place that responds to and reinforces locally distinctive patterns of development and landscape
Continuity and enclosure: Clarity of form A place where public and private spaces are clearly distinguished
Quality of public realm: Sense of wellbeing and amenity A place with public spaces and routes that are lively and pleasant to use
Ease of movement: Connectivity and permeability A place that is easy to get to and to move through
Legibility: Ease of understanding A place that has a clear image and is easy to understand
Adaptability: Ease of change A place that can change easily
Diversity: Ease of choice A place with variety and mixed use
Common Use Some Common Jargon Urban structure Layout Scale Appearance Public Realm Urban grain Density + Mix Height + Massing Building type Façade + Interface Details + Materials Streetscape + Landscape
Urban Structure: The Essential Diagram of a Place Drawings: Urban Initiatives
Urban Grain: The Texture and Pattern of a Place Image: mæ
Density and Mix: The Quantum, Distribution, Type and Inter-relationship of Land Uses Image: Urban Splash
Height and Massing:The size and Shape of Buildings in Relation to Other Development Image: CABE case study Stoke Newington West Reservoir Centre
The Public Realm: A Place the Public Use Image: CABE case study Green Streets, Portland USA
Building Type / Typology: Is it a Bird or is it a Plane? Image: Proctor and Matthews Architects
Reduced Provision Design: No Street Clutter Image: mæ
Façade and Interface:The Articulation of the Front of the Building in Relation to the Street. Image: CABE case study Gainsborough Studios - Munkenbeck and Marshall
Home Zone: Shared Street Surface Image: CABE case study Gun Wharf - Plymouth

3. Communicating Design - some methods You now know your terminology, but the best way to communicate design ideas is often through drawings, images, diagrams, models and even films These can be incorporated in to and positively inform: Negotiations Formal reports Letters and decisions Engagement and consultation material and processes Appeal evidence Talks, presentations and meetings Publicity

Remember, when using drawings, images and diagrams in meetings, documents and presentations: Make sure they have a clear purpose. They are not just for prettifying written documents Give them space to breath. Full bleed is better than tiny and illegible Consider resolution and reproduction. Projection, photocopying, scanning Reference work that is not your own and get permission to use it
4. Negotiation Clearly establish principles and objectives (on both sides) Establish whether the principles and objectives compete Establish terms. Use shared references and a glossary if necessary Establish roles and responsibilities Establish a timetable Make careful records of negotiations and agreements Be prepared to challenge your own assumptions and to compromise Remember compromise is not always necessary or negative (win-win and the orange example)
The Orange: There s Only One Orange Image: mæ
Adversarial Negotiation Mr A wants the orange and Mrs B wants the orange Solution: Cut the orange in half. Both go away a bit miffed Image: mæ
Principled Negotiation Establish why Mr A wants the orange (for the juice) Establish why Mrs B wants the orange (for the zest) Solution: Peel the orange. Give Mrs B the rind and Mr A the juicy bit. Both go away with exactly what they wanted Image: mæ
Negotiation: Pre-application
Negotiation: Groups Feedback
