16 2. Common Terminology When it comes to the language we use to describe or assess design, it makes sense to use a shared terminology to avoid confusion and misinterpretation The best place to start is By Design

Communicating Design - some methods You now know your terminology, but the best way to communicate design ideas is often through drawings, images, diagrams, models and even films These can be incorporated in to and positively inform: Negotiations Formal reports Letters and decisions Engagement and consultation material and processes Appeal evidence Talks, presentations and meetings Publicity

63 Remember, when using drawings, images and diagrams in meetings, documents and presentations: Make sure they have a clear purpose. They are not just for prettifying written documents Give them space to breath. Full bleed is better than tiny and illegible Consider resolution and reproduction. Projection, photocopying, scanning Reference work that is not your own and get permission to use it

64 4. Negotiation Clearly establish principles and objectives (on both sides) Establish whether the principles and objectives compete Establish terms. Use shared references and a glossary if necessary Establish roles and responsibilities Establish a timetable Make careful records of negotiations and agreements Be prepared to challenge your own assumptions and to compromise Remember compromise is not always necessary or negative (win-win and the orange example)
