01 Course Instructor Location Architecture: A Catalyst for Youth Behavior Youth Center Focused on At-Risk Youth Thesis Studio, Spring 2017 Andrew Cohen Lonsdale Ave. & Higgsinson Ave. Intersection Central Falls, RI Nature: Park and Athletic Complex Connection Description: Transparency: Natural Surveillance Aesthetic Design: Facade Design on Floor Central Falls is characterized by a diverse cultural history, largely Latinos, and serves as the site for the Center for At-Risk Youth. However, it has become the town with the highest crime rate in the state, most of them being youth. Youth struggle has extended far beyond troubling communities, into richer ones, causing neighborhoods to become victims of violence and crime. The idea of this project was to help decrease the struggle, not necessarily creating a boundary between the youth and the outside world, but using architecture and program to impact human behavior and society. Accessibility, creativity, and community are all keys to a city transformation. The design aims to demote violence, using different architectural elements such as nature by connecting with the neighboring athletic complex and park, transparency for natural surveillance, and aesthetic design to promote the change and create a pleasing atmosphere. The project then includes several programmatic elements such as counseling and job training that look to serve young individuals from the community as well as their families, focusing on the troubling and struggling population, as the project looks to improve the community and help our future stars. 9
Initial Sketches Entry Courtyard Lonsdale and Higginson Ave. Corner Massing / Program The building shape and program locations were determined in many ways. The main circulation hall serves as a connector from space to space, as well as from the park to the athletic complex. Each space branches off from the main hall, reducing the number of secondary private halls. The angled workout space leads the visitors from inside the building, towards the path that leads to the athletic complex. Massing Program Art is a big hobby in youth today, so the art spaces (gallery, art studio, and dance studio) are located on the Lonsdale St. side, with the gallery located on the corner that's more open and visible, bringing in more views. This way, passbyers can see into the spaces, serving as an invitation to come in and experience the building. 12 Lower Level Ground Level Second Level Entry Waiting Area / Lounge Main Hall From Entry GYM Transparency / Visibility Natural Surveillance is very important in this design. Since people can hide in any hidden corner and perform illegal actions, curtain walls allow views to every direction. The main hall that runs along every space must have users in it continuously, both to add to the number of effective eyes and to induce the people in the building to watch the spaces. The openness of the building also helps with the surveillance. For example, from the main entry, you can see to the other end of the hall, into the art wing, into the cafeteria, into the GYM, and into sections of the second level. 12 Section Through Main Axis
Roof Plaza View From South East Main Hall Platform Nature / Aesthetic Design Nature decreases stress, increases creativity, and relaxes the body/mind. The connection of park to building and building to athletic complex, allows nature to flow from the park, into the building, through the main hall, and back out towards the complex, creating a relaxing atmosphere for the visitors. The south facade design brings a cheerful mood to the design. Using blue and red curtain panels (as well as blue and red interior walls), the color gets reflected into the main hall, creating a happy space. The colors also help with sunshading in places where it's needed. South Exterior Space South Elevation 13

02 Cultural Catalyst: Barack Obama Presidential Library Course Instructor Location Comprehensive Studio, Spring 2016 Nathan Fash S Martin Luther King Drive South Side Chicago, IL Building Forming Exterior pace Interior / Exterior Relationship Public vs Private Description: Located in a socially and economically challenging urban area, the Barack Obama Presidential Library was designed to help revitalize this struggling area. The South Side of Chicago is known as a low-class and dangerous area, so the addition of several supervised gathering spaces and a safe place to learn, creates a chance for this community to unite and become healthier. The concept of an exterior and interior relationship is demonstrated in several ways. The transparency of the facades is like creating "no boundaries," creating a relationship between views from the inside and outside. Each major interior space has a related exterior space adjacent to it, created by the form of the building as well as the surounding landscape. This relationship is what makes this a strong design and successful building. 15
Connections Located between the Garfield train station and Washington Park, this area is always busy. People are always getting on and off the train, either to get to work, get to the park, or get home. The library serves as a connection for both, using greenery and paths. The facade transparency used for the exterior/interior connection allows for views to the inside, "selling" the interior activities and inviting visitors. 16

03 Israel & Palestine Museum: Two identities, One Place Course Instructor Location Graduate Studio, Fall 2015 Hasan Khan Independence Avenue SW Washington, DC Connections Circulation program Organization Description: The Israel and Palestine conflict has been a very big problem. The Israel & Palestine Museum deserves a site as prominant as the conflict's story, so along the edge of the National Mall in Washington D.C. was perfect, as it attracts more than 20 million visitors each year from all over the world. The museum shows that even though there is a problem between both territories, there are still ways in which they can both connect and unite. To show the unity, there are two buildings, one showing the history between both and the other showing things they have in common: culture and art. The buildings are united in two places, the ground and the fourth level. On the exterior of the ground floor, there is a material change, dictating where the entrances are, directly below the connecting and symbolic fourth floor bridge. The bridge is a gathering space where visitors can meet, read, and reflect. 21

View to Arts Building Arial View Towards U.S. Capitol Bisecting the site, Maryland Avenue leads your eye towards the United States Capitol. Both buildings help frame this view. Incorporated in the site design, the Islamic garden is conceived as a place of rest and reflection, sometimes being a reminder of paradise. Water and shade are major elements in the garden, using trees, pools, and channels to divide the garden into four smaller gardens. Islamic Garden Section Through South Building 23

04 Eat Drink RI Central Market Course Instructor Location Graduate Studio, Fall 2016 Olga Mesa 25 India Street Providence, RI Bars Axis Description: Situated along the water s edge on India Street, The Eat Drink RI Central Market begins to replicate the shape of a wave. Approaching the site, the visitor is greeted by a grid pattern on the ground, materialized with hard and soft scape. Approaching the market, the ground pattern appears to slope up, becoming the roof of the market. Going through either North or East entrances, the visitor enters a large space with a variety of ceiling heights, as it slopes up towards the water side. Numerous market stalls and restaurants line the sides of the long bars, creating an axis going East to West and another axis going North to South towards the water. Because the site is relatively flat, the sloped roof will act as topography, sloping up towards the south and up and down in the East West direction. Roof materiality is made of concrete and glass, patterned in a checkerboard way allowing for interior aesthetic light patterns. Grid 27
Major Parameters The project was begun by building shuttle models and dropping them, observing their fall and naming their major parameters. In this model, the major parameters were the wings, shaft, and axis of the wings, determind the direction and speed of the spin while falling. These were then incorporated into the market design. Wire represents the major axes of the roof The wings are represented by the solid sections of the roof 28 North-South Section

05 Personal Work Description: I have always enjoyed drawing, but it wasn t until my fourth year of my undergraduate studies that I actually found a passion in it. My art professor taught us how to work with charcoal and I immediately found a joy in doing it, continuing to use it outside of my art class. My first piece for class was a replication of Georges de la Tour s Mary Magdalen and the Smoking Flame. I then went on to draw portraits of celebrities, family, and friends. I am now experimenting with subjects other than people. 31
