4 1 2 User-centered design process Generated sites using GIS for Berlin case study CREATING VIBRANT SPACES FOR CULTURAL EXCHANGE The influx of migrants and refugees into Western European cities has put stress on existing infrastructure and has exposed cultural tensions. Cities have been working to address the immediate need for housing through building quick and efficient multifamily housing blocks dispersed throughout the city. This often leaves migrants and refugees with feelings of isolation and discontent. Harnessing geospatial data provided by the city, Kaleidoscape intertwines a network of spaces in underutilized areas near housing. These spaces have a range of programs to address essential needs beyond housing and provide opportunities for engagement with their new neighbors. The location provides a prime opportunity to be a learning center for children and adults to be taught the history and agriculture of the area as well as a farm for locally grown produce. 8 5 6 BUILDING A LEGACY: MERGING PRESIDENCY WITH COMMUNITY ORGANIZER PAST Creating a physical manifestation of Barack Obama s legacy to be situated on the marginalized South Side of Chicago provides many challenges as well as opportunities. Drawing on Obama s internationally iconic image and his history of public service, the project seeks to create a conversation between two groups of individuals, the tourist and the community member through the creation of a programmable interstitial space between the thick exterior walls and the library where the two groups can commingle.
