3 Upstate NY ASLA student poster competition winner, Explore Chain Works District is a design for a post industrial complex on South Hill in Ithaca, NY. Our vision was to create a neighborhood district which caters to active lifestyles for all ages and becomes a recreation center for the city of Ithaca and its visitors. One of our key design moves is a proposed aerial tram called the Ithaca pulley that would allow for safe and convenient transportation between the site, Ithaca College and the Ithaca Commons Downtown. The overall site design was a collaboration between me, Pam, and Val but we each focused on detailing a different space within the design. I worked on the Hub, Pam designed the ice rink, and Val designed the Gallery space. We collaborated in drawing the line work for the site plan in AutoCAD and it was then exported to illustrator where Pam worked on creating this illustration. The Pulley would traverse the Drumlin topography of Ithaca to make travel between our Chain Works site, Ithaca College, and Downtown Ithaca easily accessible. Each point is a stop on the pulley and the icons (borrowed from the Noun Project state parks collection) show the activities available at each stop. 5 The Pulley Building 6 Building 35 The Pulley at the Ice Rink Building 33 To Bike Storage THE HUB To Bus Stop and Underground Parking Downtown The Hub Upper Plaza Ithaca College I worked independently to create this Photoshop perspective of my vision for the Hub. I started with a screen shot from a sketch-up model Val created which included the buildings and I-beams for reference. I worked primarily on the design of this central entry space where the pulley, the bus, and pedestrian traffic all enter the site and are greeted by restaurants, shoppings, a play area and access to recreational opportunities throughout the site. 6 A A 10 13B THE HUB Downtown The Hub Upper Plaza Ithaca College This is a section cut through the Hub that I create with the use of Illustrator and Photoshop. Val added to it in the final stages of the project to update some of the graphics to match the other sections that she worked on. 7 Extending Tides Extending Tides is a design study and proposal for Shooters Island in Newark Bay that exposes the subtleties of the tidal zone to maximize potential area for tidal wetlands. This study looks at the possibility of extending the tidal zone by modifying the land form of the island and removing existing bulkhead to create a shallower slope and greater tidal gradient, from subtidal to upland. The resulting transformation will convert the island s upland habitat, into an extension of the tidal zone that will foster the establishment of new tidal wetland habitat through natural processes. Once established, cord grass (a key wetland species,) will promote sedimentation and allow for wetlands to expand into the bay over time at a rate that will potentially keep up with sea level rise for the next century. The final poster for this project was a total of 12 feet in length. The context plan and poster shown above are the final graphics. 8 This is a zoom in on the poster which is focused around a long section cut of the island. It shows the existing and proposed conditions and how the processes that act upon the island will change with our proposed change to the island topography. The lighter graphic elements represent future projected conditions such as how the tidal zone will increase after our proposed changes and how wetland development causes sedimentation to increase. I collaborated with Nick and Claire on the entire poster and contributed primarily to the researching and depicting the tidal data, working with Nick to project the tide data using Rhino and Grasshopper, and annotating and diagramming how the wetland development, sedimentation and tides would perform over time. 9 Sedimentation Shifting of habitat zones The sedimentation and shifting habitats diagrams shown above are two of the diagram I created to illustrate the natural processes acting on tidal wetlands. The diagrams are meant to break down some of the information shown in the section. These diagrams depict how cord grass causes sedimentation to occur which allows the cord grass habitat to move further out into the bay. The decomposition of cord grass in the higher area of its range allows salt hay to shift into this new peat layer previously occupied by the cord grass. Theses process work together over time to extend the tidal wetland habitat. The challenge for our group was learning how to depict multiple processes happening over time and how to show the present, proposed, and future conditions in one sectional drawing. 10 NATURE PLAY The Village of Cazenovia is interested in building a small play area along a portion of Chittenango Creek that sits behind the Cazenovia Public Library. The community is looking for an alternative to the typical prebuilt playground structures and hopes to incorporate an educational component into the design. My studio visited the site and were able to talk to some members of the community before doing research of our own, finding design precedents, and proposing a design. This process took place over two weeks and ended with a presentation of our design ideas to the mayor, librarian and other community members. My design focused on creating space that could be used for gathering, playing and library programs. It includes creek access for fishing and education and a variety of plant species that can become educational components for library programs and playful exploration. I looked at the branch structure, buds, cones, and bark to become better at identifying the trees in winter. From my sketches, photos, and research I compiled a fact sheet for each tree.
