2 Green infrastructure is an interconnected system of natural areas and open space that conserves ecosystem values, helps sustain clean air and water, and provides benefits to people and wildlife. Green infrastructure strategies and related benefits extend well beyond stormwater harvesting and mitigation. Tree canopy cover offers temperature and air quality benefits; greenways provide alternative transportation, opportunities for physical activity, and stress reduction, and a comfortable and desirable public realm improves urban vitality.

4 Local governments can implement a wide range of green infrastructure actions including low impact development (LID) methods, multi-purpose neighborhood and regional water management, and the promotion of habitat patch and ecological connectivity through urban forestry, agriculture, public spaces, and natural resource conservation planning.
