3 INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND The National Kitchen and Bath Association has tracked kitchen and bath design trends since the 1980s, and this particular iteration has tracked trends since NKBA members provide their point-of-view as specialists on the front lines, creating safe, accessible, sustainable and beautiful kitchens and bathrooms. This year, 562 NKBA members across North America, representing multiple industry segments, participated in this online study. Findings are based on the number of respondents who specified materials, product types and design for their kitchen and bath clients during It does not represent the market size for these categories. For a report detailing market size by product category, please refer to the NKBA Size of Industry Study, available at NKBA.org/research. Keep in mind that NKBA members specialize in full kitchen and bath projects, both remodeling and new construction. This study is most valuable in identifying trends among kitchens in the $20,000 - $49,000+ price range and bathrooms in the $10,000 - $30,000+ range. 3

6 1 Clean lines, built-ins and simple door styles. Contemporary-styled kitchens overtake traditional to be the second most popular design after transitional. 16 NKBA MEMBERS ON KITCHEN DESIGN TRENDS Getting away from the heavy traditional lines, and going to the cleaner softer lines. More transitional and contemporary kitchens in traditional homes. Cabinets with automation. Euro 3/4 to 1/12 inch counters glass laminated with art. More tech in the counter deck. Blue is coming strong. I love mid-century modern and natural-medium wood tones with light beige and subtle brushed brass hardware. Spaces that are more integrated into the entire home...opened up living spaces into the kitchen. Cabinets that have more of a furniture feel or built in/meant to be part of the home look. Keeping with the open concept but also being a bit more daring in adding color on a bolder scale than in recent years. 16

18 SUMMARY: TOP 2017 KITCHEN DESIGN TRENDS Transitional design remains the most popular. Contemporary design has overtaken traditional design for the first time, as traditional drops to the third most popular style for kitchens. Industrial and mid-century modern are emerging. White and gray painted cabinets dominate and show no signs of slowing down, especially gray. Blue painted and high gloss cabinets are emerging, as well as blues and blacks for overall color schemes. More kitchens are designed in a mix of colors and materials, such as mixed cabinet finishes and varying countertop materials in kitchens. White painted cabinets and gray painted cabinets are most popular, as are dark woods. Metal - still a very small segment of the cabinet market - is most frequently specified by younger designers and male designers. Furniture look pieces, rollouts and pullouts and under cabinet lighting (LED) are the most popular kitchen cabinet features. Quartz is the most popular countertop material and trending up. Interior barn doors and pocket doors in kitchens are trending up. Accessible and/or universal design features are trending up. Induction cooktops and convection ovens are trending up, as are built-in microwaves. Steam ovens, still a small segment of the market, are also trending higher. Technology in the kitchen is increasing, with about a third of NKBA professionals reporting that they included wiring and pathways for future tech integration in 2016 kitchen projects. Also trending upwards: more internet connected appliances and docking stations. 18

31 NKBA MEMBERS ON BATHROOM DESIGN TRENDS Cool gray/white color palette. Most popular finishes: chrome, brushed brass/gold, aged/vintage unlaquered brass. Console and trough sinks. Universal design for all ages, and all abilities or disabilities. Cleaner lines, less bulky, more smart storage. Free standing tubs, larger showers in master baths instead of tubs. Clean lines, use of wall mounted toilets, bench seats in showers with hand held shower faucets, floating vanities. 31

36 Technology in the Kitchen & Bathroom Kitchen Technology Specified Aside from Lighting Controls that are specified by 7 in 10 designers, most other technologies are still being used by fewer than half of designers. Nonetheless, all of these technologies are gaining popularity.
